War
A French warship commanded by Captain Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville defeated an English squadron commanded by Captain John Fletcher in the Battle of Hudson Bay during the War of the Grand Alliance, defeating three Hudson's Bay Company ships, sinking two. Captain D'Iberville's ship was wrecked, and he barely beached it before a blizzard closed in and he was pinned under a barrage of cannon fire. The rest of the squadron arrived to rescue Captain D'Iberville the following morning.

Amy Beach
. U.S. composer. Mrs. Beach was a pianist who became the first successful female American composer when her Gaelic Symphony was performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896. She wrote about 150 songs, as well as works for piano, and other compositions. Mrs. Beach died on December 27, 1944 at the age of 77.

. French military aviator. Warrant Officer Labouchère was with the Free French Air Force and shot down at least four enemy planes--including two during the attempted landing at Dieppe on August 19, 1942--but disappeared and was apparently shot down during air-to-air combat 13 days before his 25th birthday, and his body was never recovered.

War
The Japanese high command ordered a withdrawal at Milne Bay, New Guinea, the first major Japanese defeat in land warfare during the Pacific War in World War II.

Crime
Joseph Hilton Smyth and Irvine Harvey Williams were arrested in New York by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation on charges that they had been acting as unregistered Japanese agents since 1937.

. Canadian football player. Mr. MacDonald played with the Calgary Tigers and Calgary Altomahs of the Alberta Rugby Union from 1929-1934. He died after a week-long illness.

. U.S. musician. Mr. Barnes was a swing jazz guitarist who played on his own and with others in a career spanning more than 35 years. He played the first electric guitar in 1931, and reportedly made the first recording of an electric guitar in 1938. Mr. Barnes died of a heart attack.

Space
The United States launched the Voyager 1 probe from Cape Canaveral, Florida to the outer solar system, 16 days after the launch of Voyager 2.

Terrorism
Five men demanding the release of jailed terrorists Andreas Baader and two of his associates kidnapped West German industrialist Hanns-Martin Schleyer and killed his chauffeur and three bodyguards.

World events
Two days after former Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had been arrested in Lahore on the charge of conspiring to murder a political opponent in 1974, a second murder conspiracy charge was added.

Disasters
An Ecuadorian airliner crashed into a mountain peak in the Cajas Mountains 25 miles north of Cuenca and exploded and burned, killing all 33 people aboard.

Dave Cutler kicked 4 field goals--including one from 54 yards in the 4th quarter--and converted Tom Wilkinson's 35-yard touchdown pass to Howard Strickland as the Eskimos overcame an early 7-0 deficit to defeat the Stampeders at McMahon Stadium. The Stampeders opened the scoring when they drove from the opening kickoff, and quarterback John Hufnagel handed off to Willie Burden for a 1-yard touchdown rush, converted by Cyril McFall. Edmonton wide receiver Pete Ribbins suffered a shoulder separation on the 2nd-half kickoff, which kept him out of action until the playoffs. Calgary defensive back Wayne Allison, meanwhile suffered a bizarre season-ending torn achilles tendon when he was standing on the sidelines during a punting play; Edmonton guard Herb Dobbins accidentally rolled into Mr. Allison while attempting to bring down a Calgary punt returner. It was the last Canadian Football League game for backup Edmonton tight end Henry Sovio, a former Stampeder. It was the first CFL game for Calgary defensive back Terry Irvin, defensive end Reggie Lewis, and defensive tackle Ed McAleney.

At one time in the early 1970s, Quinn Martin Productions was responsible for more hours of prime-time television programming in the United States than any other company.

Carlton Fisk of the Chicago White Sox hit his 300th career major league home run, but the White Sox lost 4-2 to the Kansas City Royals before 34,391 fans at Royals Stadium. Danny Jackson won the pitchers' duel over Jose DeLeon, each of whom pitched complete games.

In his first appearance in a Toronto uniform since being acquired from the Baltimore Orioles five days earlier, Mike Flanagan allowed 4 hits in 7 2/3 innings to get the win as the Blue Jays shut out the Seattle Mariners 3-0 before 38,436 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.

The Cleveland Indians scored 8 runs in the 4th inning and 4 in the 9th as they routed the Boston Red Sox 15-2 before 28,638 fans at Fenway Park in Boston. Joe Carter hit 2 home runs and a double, scoring 4 runs and driving in 5, while Cleveland second baseman Tommy Hinzo batted 5 for 6 with a double, run, and run batted in, and left fielder Mel Hall was 4 for 6 with a double, run, and 4 RBIs.

The New York Yankees overcame an early 4-0 deficit with 2 runs in the 2nd inning and 3 in the 3rd and held on for a 7-6 win over the California Angels before 31,566 fans at Yankee Stadium.

Tom Brunansky led off the bottom of the 9th inning with a home run to give the Minnesota Twins a 2-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers before 51,122 fans at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Twins tied the game in the 8th when Kirby Puckett tripled home Al Newman with 2 out.

Oddibe McDowell singled home Tom O'Malley with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Texas Rangers an 8-7 win over the Detroit Tigers before 26,058 fans at Arlington Stadium. The Tigers led 7-4 after 6 1/2 innings.

The Cincinnati Reds scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning, 5 in th 4th, and 3 in the 9th to beat the Chicago Cubs 10-5 before 33,336 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chicago second baseman Ryne Sandberg batted 4 for 4 with 3 doubles, 2 runs, and 2 runs batted in. Damon Berryhill made his major league debut at catcher with the Cubs, playing the last 3 innings behind the plate, making 1 putout and batting 1 for 2.

Dennis Martinez allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run in 7 innings to improve his record for the season to 8-3 as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 4-1 before 11,805 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Kevin Coffman made his major league debut as Atlanta's starting pitcher, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings, walking 3 batters and striking out 3 in taking the loss. Billy Herman, 83
. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. Herman was a second baseman with the Chicago Cubs (1931-1941); Brooklyn Dodgers (1941-1943, 1946); Boston Braves (1946); and Pittsburgh Pirates (1947). In 1,922 games he batted .304 with 47 home runs and 839 runs batted in. Mr. Herman's best season was probably 1935, when he batted .341 and led the National League with 227 hits and 57 doubles and helped the Cubs win the pennant. He managed the Pirates in 1947 and the Boston Red Sox for 2 games in 1964 and full-time in 1965 and 1966, posting a record of 189 wins and 274 losses. Mr. Herman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.

Mother Teresa, 87
. Ottoman-born Indian nun. Mother Teresa, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in what is now Macedonia, moved to India in 1929 and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, opening her first hospice in 1952. She was known for ministering to suffering and dying people, especially those forgotten or ignored by most of society. Mother Teresa subscribed to a version of Roman Catholicism that believes that physical suffering is necessary for salvation, and was criticized by some for not doing more to alleviate poverty. However, she was much honoured by the world and her church. Mother Teresa died 10 days after her 87th birthday, and was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4, 2016.

Georg Solti, 84. Hungarian-born orchestra conductor. Sir George, born György Stern, conducted various orchestras throughout the world in a career spanning more than a half-century. He was music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1969-1991. Sir George, who became a British subject in 1972, was still active when he died in his sleep while on vacation in France.

D. James Kennedy, 76
. U.S. clergyman. Dr. Kennedy founded Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1960, and served as its pastor until shortly before his death, just over eight months after suffering a serious heart attack. He founded Evangelism Explosion International, a movement of lay people going door-to-door to present the gospel of Jesus Christ. Dr. Kennedy was active in his later years in efforts to restore the United States to its supposed Christian founding principles, but he denied being a Christian Reconstructionist or Dominionist--movements that believe that society should be run according to Biblical law and/or run by Christians.

David Onley was installed as Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, succeeding James Bartleman.
