James A. McDougall, 49
. U.S. politician. Mr. McDougall, a Democrat, was Attorney General of Illinois from 1843-1846, but moved to California during the gold rush of 1849-1850. He was Attorney General of California from 1850-1851, and represented the state in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1853-1855 and in the Senate from 1861-1867. Mr. McDougall never returned from Washington, D.C. to California during his entire term in the Senate. He didn't run for re-election, and drank himself to death six months after leaving office.

Politics and government
In the first provincial election in Ontario since Confederation on July 1, the Conservatives, led by John Sandfield Macdonald, and the Liberals, led by Archibald McKellar, each won 41 seats. A coalition government was formed, led by Mr. Macdonald as Premier.

Law
U.S. President Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation concerning the maintenance of Civil Law in southern states.

. Romanian soldier and nurse. Sublocotenent Teodoroiu, born Cătălina Toderoiu, was originally a nurse, but persuaded authorities to allow her to serve as a soldier in the Romanian Army during World War I in 1916. She won several decorations for bravery before being killed by machine gun fire in the Muncelu-Varnița area of Romania.

Actor James Cagney visited Libertyville, Illinois and made a speech at Cook Memorial Library before a crowd of 4,000 in an appeal for people to buy war bonds. The appeal raised nearly $111,000 in pledges, and Libertyville was rewarded a week later by hosting the world premiere screening at the Liberty Theatre of Desperate Journey, starring Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan. The Royal Canadian Navy ships HMCS Shawinigan and HMCS Trail together picked up 17 survivors from the Canadian merchant ship Donald Stewart that had been torpedoed and sunk northeast of Cape Whittle, Quebec in the Gulf of St.Lawrence at position 50°32'N, 58°46'W by German U-boat U-517.

In response to news of its coming liquidation, Dov Lopatyn led an uprising against occupying SS forces in the Ghetto of Lakhva, Poland (present-day Belarus).

Returning from an expedition in the Arctic, Canadian geologist J.L. Robinson reported locating the North Magnetic Pole on Prince of Wales Island, and said that it shifted constantly in a 50-mile ellipse.

Baseball
Bill McCahan pitched a no-hitter for the Philadelphia Athletics and had a hit and run of his own as they shut out the Washington Nationals 3-0 before 2,816 fans at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Losing pitcher Ray Scarborough pitched a 9-hit complete game, allowing 3 earned runs. Washington pinch hitter Joe Grace grounded out for the second out of the 9th inning in the 484th and last game of his 6-year major league career.

Tommy Henrich and Joe DiMaggio each had 4 hits for the New York Yankees as they beat the Boston Red Sox 11-2 in the first game of a doubleheader before 32,723 fans at Fenway Park in Boston. Dom DiMaggio and Sam Mele hit home runs for the Red Sox, with Mr. Mele's homer coming as a pinch hitter in the 8th inning. Mr. Henrich doubled home 3 runs in the 4th inning of the second game to help the Yankees win 9-6 to complete the sweep. Johnny Lindell homered and drove in 3 runs for the Yankees, while Bobby Doerr homered for the Red Sox. Bobo Newsom and Spec Shea were the respective winning pitchers.

With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning, Hank Edwards tripled home Catfish Metkovich with the tying run and then scored the winning run on a single by Hal Peck as the Cleveland Indians edged the Chicago White Sox 6-5 to gain a split of their doubleheader before 23,691 fans at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. Cass Michaels had a single, double, triple, 2 runs, and 2 runs batted in as the White Sox won the first game 8-3, with Orval Grove pitching a 6-hit complete game victory.

Stan Musial batted 5 for 6 with a triple, run, and run batted in, and pinch hitter Ron Northey hit a grand slam in the 9th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1 before 13,919 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Winning pitcher Red Munger allowed 8 hits and 1 earned run in 7 innings.

The Cincinnati Reds took a 7-0 lead after 3 innings and coasted to a 13-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates before 37,299 fans at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. Cincinnati catcher Ray Lamanno drove in 4 runs with a single, double, and triple. Eddie Miller hit a home run for Cincinnati, while Ralph Kiner and Billy Cox homered for Pittsburgh. Mr. Kiner's home run was his 41st of the season, and he also hit a triple. Pittsburgh pinch hitter Billy Sullivan singled to lead off the bottom of the 7th inning, but was forced out in a double play in the 962nd and last game of his 12-year major league career.

Tony Demers, 80
. Canadian hockey player. Mr. Demers, a native of Chambly, Quebec, played right wing with the Montreal Canadiens (1937-38, 1939-43) and New York Rangers (1943-44), scoring 22 goals and 20 assists in 83 regular season games, and no points in 2 playoff games. His best season was 1940-41, when he scored 13 goals and 10 assists in 46 games, and played both his playoff games.

Disasters
Vietnam Airlines Flight 815, a Tupolev Tu-134 jet en route from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, crashed on approach into Phnom Penh airport, killing 65 of 66 passengers and crew members.

Henry Burris threw 2 touchdown passes each to Ken-Yon Rambo and Ryan Thelwell to lead the Stampeders over the Eskimos before 35,650 fans at McMahon Stadium. Tyler Ebell rushed 21 yards for an Edmonton touchdown to open the scoring in the 1st quarter, and Ricky Ray passed 28 yards to Trevor Gaylor for the other Edmonton TD early in the 2nd quarter. The Stampeders outscored the Eskimos 20-3 in the 2nd half. The Calgary defense sacked Mr. Ray 5 times, while Mr. Burris wasn't sacked once.
