The Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU), which became popularly known as the Big Four, was founded in Toronto as a combination of the Hamilton Tigers and Toronto Argonauts of the Ontario Rugby Football Union and the Ottawa Rough Riders and Montreal Foot Ball Club of the Quebec Rugby Football Union. The QRFU withdrew from senior competition. The Ottawa entry was the result of the amalgamation of the Ottawa St. Pats and Rough Riders. Montreal won the Big Four's first game, 17-8 over Toronto.

. U.S. author. Mr. Butler wrote more than 30 books and more than 2,000 short stories and essays. He was best known for the short story Pigs is Pigs (1905).

Baseball
Charlie Dressen was fired as manager of the Cincinnati Reds after pressing general manager Warren Giles for a contract renewal. The Reds were in last place in the National League with a record of 51-78. Mr. Dressen, who was in his fourth season as the Reds' manager, was replaced for the rest of the season by scout Bobby Wallace, who hadn't managed in the major leagues since 1912.

U.S. envoy Wendell Willkie, speaking in Baghdad, said that peoples of the Middle East favoured the cause of the United Nations.

Bob Carpenter and Bill McGee were the respective winning pitchers as the New York Giants swept a doubleheader from the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 and 5-3 before 17,794 fans at the Polo Grounds in New York.

Johnny Beazley was 1 out away from his 20th win of the season, but the Philadelphia Phillies, aided by 2 St. Louis errors, scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Shibe Park in Philadelphia. Hank Riebe allowed a passed ball and first baseman Rudy York made errors on two consecutive plays, leading to 3 unearned runs in the top of the 9th inning as the Washington Nationals broke a 2-2 tie and defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. Early Wynn pitched an 8-hit complete game victory to improve his record for the season to 9-16, while Hal Newhouser, who pitched the last 2 innings in relief of Tommy Bridges, fell to 8-13. Hal White pitched a 4-hitter and Don Ross batted 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 3 runs, and 4 runs batted in as the Tigers won the second game 8-0. Lou Bevil, who relieved Washington starting and losing pitcher Alex Carrasquel in the 6th inning, allowed 1 hit and no runs in 2 1/3 innings in his 4th and last major league game.

Red Ruffing and Hank Borowy were the respective winning pitchers as the New York Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Cleveland Indians 9-1 and 4-1 at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland.

Bill Butland and Tex Hughson were the respective winning pitchers as the Boston Red Sox swept a doubleheader from the Chicago White Sox 6-1 and 5-0 before 10,137 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

. U.K. military officer and Australian politician. Sir Robert served in the British Army during World War I and was an Air Vice Marshal in the Royal Air Force during World War II before serving as Governor of South Australia from 1953-1960. He died after being hit by a car.

Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, 58 or 59. Yemeni-born Saudi Arabian businessman. Mr. bin Laden moved to Saudi Arabia as a child. He founded the Saudi Binladin Group construction conglomerate, and became the wealthiest non-royal Saudi Arabian. Mr. bin Laden was killed in a plane crash. He was the father of al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

Russell L. Rogers, 39. U.S. military aviator. Lieutenant Colonel Rogers was part of the United States Air Force's X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane program from 1960 until its cancellation in 1963. He was killed when the engine of his F-105 fighter plane failed near Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa; he ejected, but his parachute failed to open properly.

Politics and government
Ike Smith was sworn in as Premier of Nova Scotia, succeeding Robert Stanfield as leader of the province's Progressive Conservative government. Mr. Stanfield announced his resignation after being elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada on September 9.

. U.K. orchestra conductor. Mr. Stokowski conducted numerous American orchestras in a career spanning almost 60 years, but was best known for his connection with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1912-1941. He enjoyed showmanship and eschewed a baton, using a freehand method of conducting. Mr. Stokowski championed the work of new composers, and made his last recording shortly before his death.

Alan Trammell hit a solo home run to open the scoring in the 4th inning and then singled and scored to begin a 4-run rally in the 9th to break a 1-1 tie as the Detroit Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-1 before 21,880 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee. Paul Molitor's homer with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th off winning pitcher Walt Terrell tied the score. Mr. Terrell allowed 8 hits in pitching a complete game to improve his 1987 record to 14-10.

The Minnesota Twins scored 4 runs in the top of the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie and defeat the Cleveland Indians 7-3 before 7,474 fans at Cleveland Stadium.

Alfredo Griffin drove in 2 runs with a sacrifice fly, but was caught stealing to end the game as his Oakland Athletics lost 6-5 to the Kansas City Royals before 27,683 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Jerry Willard was on third base, Mike Davis on second, and Terry Steinbach on first in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Mr. Griffin hit a fly ball that was caught by Danny Tartabull, who collided with center fielder Willie Wilson. No throw was made on the play, and Messrs. Willard and Davis scored to give Oakland a 3-1 lead, with Mr. Steinbach advancing to third. Luis Polonia then beat out a bunt for a single, scoring Mr. Steinbach to make the score 3-1. The Royals came back with 4 runs in the 3rd to take the lead for good. The Athletics rallied for an unearned run in the bottom of the 9th, with Mr. Griffin reaching first base on a force play with 2 out. He attempted to steal second, but Kansas City catcher Larry Owen threw to second baseman Frank White and was tagged out to end the game.

Tom Burgess threw touchdown passes to Jock Climie, Stephen Jones, and James Ellingson, Anthony Drawhorn returned an interception for a TD, and Gary Wilkerson returned a fumble for another touchdown as the Rough Riders beat the Tiger-Cats before 24,364 fans at Lansdowne Park. Hamilton quarterback Damon Allen threw touchdown passes to Wally Zatylny and Earl Winfield. The Rough Riders led 22-0 after the 1st quarter, but the Tiger-Cats reduced the deficit to 22-17 at halftime.

Doug Flutie’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Allen Pitts just 1:16 into the game was all that was needed as the Stampeders recorded their first shutout in 21 years—and the first in the CFL in 4 years—before 29,044 fans at SkyDome. Mr. Flutie also rushed for a touchdown. Blair Kiel, playing his first CFL game, relieved the ineffective Rickey Foggie at quarterback for the Argonauts in the 4th quarter, and on his first play, threw a pass that was intercepted and returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Kenton Leonard. The game was marred by a brawl at the Toronto bench area in the 3rd quarter, resulting in the ejection of Calgary’s Andy McVey and Toronto’s David Williams and Rocket Ismail, who had aimed a kick at Mr. McVey. The game was the last for Adam Rita as head coach of the Argonauts; the next day he became the first head coach to be fired during the season after leading a team to a Grey Cup championship.

Backup quarterback Sammy Garza threw touchdown passes to Larry Thompson and Warren Hudson and handed off to Mr. Hudson for a 38-yard touchdown run as the Blue Bombers broke a 16-16 tie in the 4th quarter before 26,242 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Darrell Corbin scored the first Winnipeg touchdown when he recovered a blocked punt in the Saskatchewan end zone just 1:25 into the game. Kent Austin threw for 370 yards, but his 61-yard completion to Jeff Fairholm with 38 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter was the only touchdown he was able to produce. Mr. Garza completed 10 of 15 passes for 144 yards, while starter Matt Dunigan was just 6 for 21 for 52 yards and 2 interceptions.
