. U.S. politician and diplomat. Mr. Wright, a Democrat, represented Indiana's 7th District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1843-1845; was Governor of Indiana from 1849-1857; represented Indiana in the United States Senate from 1862-1863; and served as United States Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Prussia from 1857-1861 and 1865 until his death in Berlin.

Dame Margaret portrayed Agatha Christie’s detective Miss Marple in four movies in the 1960s, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 1963 for her performance in The V.I.P.’s. She died of Alzheimer's disease on May 22, 1972, 11 days after her 80th birthday.

Horse racing
Azra, with Alonzo Clayton up, won the 18th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville in a time of 2:41 1/2, a nose ahead of Huron. Phil Dwyer, the only other horse in the race, finished third, 6 lengths behind Azra.

Afonso Costa, 66
. Prime Minister of Portugal, 1913-1914, 1915-1916, 1916, 1917. Mr. Costa was the leader of the Portuguese Republican Party and the subsequent Democratic Party faction. Following the proclamation of the First Republic in 1910, he was Minister for Justice in the provisional government of President Teófilo Braga. He served four brief terms as Prime Minister during a period of political instability, and was known for taking measures to establish a separation of church and state. Mr. Costa went into exile in Paris following a military coup d'état led by Sidónio Pais in December 1917, and never again lived in Portugal, although he led the Portuguese delegation at the Paris Peace Conference from March-June 1919, and signed the Treaty of Versailles on behalf of Portugal. He refused subsequent offers to lead the Portuguese government, and died in Paris.

Malta announced that reinforced British fighter planes, together with anti-aircraft batteries, had shot down 31 Axis planes, probably destroyed 20 others, and damaged 41 in three days of intense fighting over Malta. German forces launched an offensive attack on Kerch Peninsula at the eastern end of Crimea. Japanese troops landed several ships on Nan-jisu Island off Fukien Province, China.

World events
600 delegates and Zionist leaders from 18 countries attended the conclusion of the Biltmore Conference at the Biltmore Hotel in New York City. The conference was for the purpose of demanding "that Palestine be established as a Jewish Commonwealth."

Peruvian President Manuel Prado addressed the United States Senate and reaffirmed his country's "adherence to the international policy of [U.S.] President [Franklin D.] Roosevelt."

. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Horstmann compiled a record of 9-7 with an earned run average of 3.67 and 1 save in 50 games with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1917-1919, and batted .192 with no home runs and 2 runs batted in. He was 37-51 in a seven-year minor league career from 1915-1921.

Johnnie Chambers, 65. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Chambers compiled a record of 0-0 with an earned run average of 18.00 in 2 games with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1937. In 10 years in the minor leagues from 1933-1945, he was 95-93; his best year was his first, when he was 23-8 in 38 games with the Greensboro Patriots of the Class B Piedmont League in 1933. Mr. Chambers drowned in a lake near Palatka, Florida.

Diplomacy
U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance met in London with Israeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon to renew the U.S. commitment to a "special relationship" with Israel. Mr. Vance assured Mr. Allon that the United States would not impose a solution in the Middle East and that any American suggestions for a settlement would be made to the "parties involved." He also promised that Israel would continue to receive the arms she needed as well as "advanced technology."

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored all their runs in the 7th inning as they defeated the Montreal Expos 5-1 before 20,156 fans at Olympic Stadium in Montreal in the Wednesday night Expos Baseball telecast on CBC. 4 of the Los Angeles runs were unearned as a result of an error by Montreal third baseman Larry Parrish.

Dave Winfield hit a home run and drove in 3 runs in the first game and added an RBI in the second game to help the San Diego Padres sweep a doubleheader from the New York Mets 6-3 and 4-3 before 7,518 fans at Shea Stadium in New York.

Chet Lemon singled home Richie Zisk with 1 out in the top of the 10th inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Chicago White Sox edged the Texas Rangers 4-3 before 8,113 fans at Arlington Stadium. . O le Ao o le Malo (Head of State) of Samoa, 1962-2007. Malietoa Tanumafili II carried the title Malietoa as one of Samooa's four paramount chiefs, from 1940 until his death. He shared the title of O le Ao o le Malo from 1962-1963, becoming sole head of state after the death of Tupua Tamasese Mea'ole in 1963. Malietoa Tanumafili II was the oldest national ruler in the world at the time of his death; he was succeeded as O le Ao o le Malo by Tupua Tamasese Tupuola Tufuga Efi.
