Johnny Keane, 55
. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. Keane was a shortstop and third baseman who played 15 seasons in the minors from 1930-1948, batting .292 with 20 home runs in 1,384 games. He managed for 17 seasons in the minor leagues from 1938-1958, winning five pennants. Mr. Keane joined the coaching staff of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1959, and replaced Solly Hemus as manager on July 5, 1961. Mr. Keane led the Cardinals to the National League pennant in 1964, followed by a victory over the New York Yankees in the World Series. Shortly after the World Series, Mr. Keane resigned as manager of the Cardinals and became manager of the Yankees, who fired Yogi Berra despite Mr. Berra coming within one game of winning the World Series in his first season as a manager. Mr. Keane took over leadership of the Yankees just in time for team to begin a long decline--largely the result of aging players and a depleted farm system--and the team dropped to sixth in the American League in 1965 with a 77-85 record, the team's worst finish in 40 years. When the Yankees got off to a disastrous 4-16 start in 1966, Mr. Keane was fired and replaced by former manager Ralph Houk. In December 1966, Mr. Keane was hired by the California Angels as a scout, but he died of a heart attack in Houston, where he lived in the off-season.

Mr. Miley was the first choice of the California Angels in the 1974 major league baseball free agent draft, and passed up on his senior year of university football in order to pursue a baseball career as a shortstop. He played 70 games with the Angels in 1975 and 14 games with them in 1976, batting .176 with 4 home runs and 30 runs batted in. Mr. Miley spent most of the 1976 season with the Salt Lake City Gulls of the AAA Pacific Coast League, batting .274 with 6 home runs and 60 RBIs in 119 games.
