James Ford Rhodes, 78
. U.S. industrialist and historian. After making a fortune in iron, coal, and steel, Mr. Rhodes devoted himself to writing American history. From 1893-1920 he published an eight-volume history of the United States, and his one-volume History of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (1918) won the Pulitzer Prize for History.

On the radio
Teddy Wakelam provided the first live commentary of a soccer match anywhere in the world, calling the game between Arsenal F.C. and Sheffield United at Highbury, England for BBC. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Ralph Barton Perry, 80
. U.S. philosopher. Dr. Perry was a leader in the New Realism movement. His books included The Moral Economy (1909) and Puritanism and Democracy (1944).

Israeli forces withdrew from the Sinai Peninsula, more than two months after aiding an abortive Anglo-French invasion of Egypt following Egyptian nationalization of the Suez Canal.

Crime
The New York City "Mad Bomber," George P. Metesky, was arrested in Waterbury, Connecticut and charged with planting more than 30 bombs.

Boxing
World featherweight champion Sandy Saddler, who had held the title from 1948-1949 and since 1950, retired on the advice of doctors. He compiled a professional record of 144-16-2.

Jobyna Ralston, 67
. U.S. actress. Miss Ralston appeared in silent movies in the 1920s, and was best known for co-starring with Harold Lloyd in six comedies from 1923-1927. She appeared in Wings (1927), and was married to co-star Richard Arlen from 1927-1946. Miss Ralston suffered from rheumatism in her later years, and died of pneumonia after a series of strokes.

Bob Howsam, who had served as general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals since replacing the fired Bing Devine in August 1964, signed a three-year contract as general manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

Pascual Pérez, 50
. Argentine boxer. Mr. Pérez won the gold medal in the flyweight division at the 1948 Summer Olympic Games in London, but didn't turn professional until 1952. He compiled a professional record of 84-7-1 from 1952-1964, and was world flyweight champion from 1954-1960, becoming the first Argentinian to hold a world title. Mr. Pérez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1977.

Danish Prime Minister Anker Jorgensen dissolved the Folketing and called for new elections, following an impasse on national housing policy.

R. Budd Dwyer, 47
. U.S. politician. Mr. Dwyer was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1971-1981, and was the Pennsylvania State Treasurer from 1981-1987. He had been convicted on a bribery charge and was due to be sentenced on January 23, but held a televised press conference, where he proclaimed his innocence. At the end of his statement, Mr. Dwyer handed an envelope to each of three associates, then took a handgun out of another envelope; despite protests from those in attendance, he put the barrel in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

Protest
Philippine security forces opened fire on a crowd of 10,000–15,000 demonstrators at Malacañang Palace, Manila, killing 13.

Rebel forces occupied Zaire's national radio station in Kinshasa and broadcasted a demand for the resignation of the government of President Mobutu Sese Seko, who had been in power since 1965.

George Dockins, 79
. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Dockins played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1945) and Brooklyn Dodgers (1947), compiling a record of 8-6 with an earned run average of 3.55 in 35 games. He played in the minor leagues from 1939-1943 and 1946-1949, with his best season coming in 1941, when he was 20-6 with a 2.05 ERA in 38 games with the Mobile Shippers of the Class B Southeastern League.

The United States Senate confirmed Madeleine Albright as the nation's first female Secretary of State.
