Born on this date
Sam Byrd
. U.S. baseball player and golfer. Mr. Byrd was an outfielder with the New York Yankees (1929-1934) and Cincinnati Reds (1935-1936), batting .274 with 38 home runs and 220 runs batted in in 745 games. He was nicknamed "Babe Ruth's Legs" for his frequent appearances as a pinch runner for Mr. Ruth. Mr. Byrd played the final inning of the 1932 World Series as a defensive replacement for Mr. Ruth. Mr. Byrd played professional golf, mainly as a club pro, from 1933-1978, winning 23 tournaments. He finished third in the 1941 Masters and fourth in the 1942 Masters, and second in the 1945 PGA Championship, becoming the first man to play in those events as well as in a World Series. Mr. Byrd died on May 11, 1981 at the age of 74.

The Jarrow March, an organized protest of 200 men against the unemployment and poverty suffered in the English Tyneside town of Jarrow, set off for London. The men arrived on October 31.

The Brooklyn Dodgers fired manager Casey Stengel after finishing 7th in the 8-team National League in 1936 with a record of 67-87, 25 games behind the pennant-winning New York Giants.

Jo-Jo Moore led off the top of the 10th inning with a double, advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Dick Bartell, and scored on a fly to center field by Bill Terry to break a 4-4 tie and give the Giants the win before 50,024 fans at Yankee Stadium. In the bottom of the 10th, Bill Dickey led off with a single, and Bob Seeds pinch ran for him at first base. After the next 2 batters made outs, Mr. Seeds was caught stealing at second base to end the game. Hal Schumacher pitched a complete game and was the winning pitcher over Pat Malone, who pitched the last 4 innings for the Yankees in relief of Red Ruffing.

Frank Robinson hit a 2-run home run and Brooks Robinson followed with a solo homer in the top of the 1st inning to give the Orioles a 3-0 lead, providing all the scoring necessary as they defeated the Dodgers before 55,941 fans at Dodger Stadium in the first World Series game played by the Orioles since 1944, when they were the St. Louis Browns. Another run in the top of the 2nd made it 4-0, but Jim Lefebvre hit a solo homer for Los Angeles in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 4-1. When Baltimore starting pitcher Dave McNally walked the bases loaded with 1 out in the bottom of the 3rd, he was relieved by Moe Drabowsky, who struck out Wes Parker, walked Jim Gilliam to force in a run, and retired John Roseboro on a foul popup. Mr. Drabowsky then shut out the Dodgers the rest of the way, striking out 10 more batters, including the side in the 4th and 5th innings to tie the World Series record for consecutive strikeouts set by Hod Eller of the Cincinnati Reds in 1919. Don Drysdale allowed 4 hits, 2 bases on balls, and 4 runs--all earned--in 2 innings to take the loss.

. Norwegian-born U.S. chemist and physicist. Dr. Onsager was awarded the 1968 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for the discovery of the reciprocal relations bearing his name, which are fundamental for the thermodynamics of irreversible processes."

Barbara Nichols, 47. U.S. actress. Miss Nichols, born Barbara Nickerauer, appeared in supporting roles--often as a stereotypical blonde--in numerous films and television programs in the 1950s and '60s. She died from liver damage left over from a car accident years earlier.

Law
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the death penalty was not a cruel and unusual penalty within the meaning of the Canadian Bill of Rights.

In the American League expansion draft, the Toronto Blue Jays picked infielder Bob Bailor from the Baltimore Orioles as their first choice among 30 unprotected players on other American League rosters; the Seattle Mariners picked outfielder Ruppert Jones from the Kansas City Royals.

. U.S. film producer. Mr. Wallis, born Aaron Blum Wolowicz, worked at Warner Brothers in the 1930s and '40s, and later worked for Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. He was nominated for 20 Academy Awards, winning the 1943 Oscar for Best Picture for Casablanca.

The London newspaper The Sunday Times ran Mordechai Vanunu's story on its front page under the headline: "Revealed — the secrets of Israel's nuclear arsenal". Mr. Vanunu was an Israeli peace activist and former nuclear technician.
