The game at Sportsman's Park started at 2:18 P.M. in order that 9 innings could be played, and the White Stockings jumped to a 3-0 lead as starter John Clarkson, pitching for the fourth time in six days, held the Browns hitless for 6 innings. The Browns tied the game in the 8th, with Arlie Latham's 2-run triple the big blow. They won the game in the 10th on Curt Welch's "$15,000 slide" home from third base on a wild pitch. The Browns won all the gate receipts from the series, which totalled $13,920--about $580 per man.

. U.S. actress. Miss Tashman began her career as a model and vaudevillian in New York before moving to Hollywood. She appeared in 66 silent and sound movies from 1921 until her death from cancer on March 21, 1934 at the age of 37. Miss Tashman's movies included So This is Paris (1926); Bulldog Drummond (1929); and Puttin' on the Ritz (1930).

Florence Maybrick, 80
. U.K.-born U.S. criminal. Mrs. Maybrick was sentenced to death in Liverpool in 1889 for poisoning her husband, but her sentence was commuted, and she was released from prison in 1905. She died at her home in Connecticut.

Soviet Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov took command of all Red Army operations in order to prevent further German advances into Russian and to prevent the Wehrmacht from capturing Moscow. He replaced Marshal Semyon Timoshenko, who was made commander of the southern front.

The United States Senate passed a supplemental Lend-Lease Bill, increasing the amount of aid to certain nations in World War II without violating the U.S.A.'s neutrality. The original Lend-Lease Act had been approved by the U.S. Congress in March.

Bernie Morrison returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game to start the Bisons on their rout of the Thunderbirds at Pan-Am Stadium in Winnipeg. John Nelson rushed for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns, Bud Harden threw TD passes of 11 yards to Mike Grace and 46 yards to Wayne Ledyard, and Al Bowness rushed 22 yards for the final Manitoba TD in the 4th quarter. Dave Pearsonn converted all 6 touchdowns. Chris Davies caught 2 touchdowns for B.C.; Gary Metz added a convert and single, and Gord Penn caught a pass for a 2-point convert.

Gene Wall rushed 8 yards for a touchdown and Dave Osiowy kicked the convert with 36 seconds remaining in the game to give the Huskies their tie with the Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon. Mr. Wall rushed 1 yard for a TD in the 1st quarter to open the scoring and Mr. Osiowy kicked a 15-yard field goal later in the quarter to give Saskatchewan a 9-0 lead, which held to halftime. Alberta quarterback Brian Larsen rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter and completed a 22-yard TD pass to John Tietzen early in the 4th quarter. Marco Cyncar converted the first TD, but missed the convert on the second. He kicked a 13-yard field goal with 2:51 remaining in the game to give Alberta a 16-13 lead.

Bob Grim, 66
. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Grim played with the New York Yankees (1954-1958); Kansas City Athletics (1958-1959, 1962); Cleveland Indians (1960); Cincinnati Reds (1960); and St. Louis Cardinals (1960), compiling a record of 61-41 with an earned run average of 3.61 in 268 games. His best year was his first, when he was 20-6 with a 3.26 ERA and was the American League Rookie of the Year. Arm troubles soon set in, and Mr. Grim became a relief pitcher, leading the AL with 19 saves in 1957.
