. King of England, 1199-1216. John, the youngest son of King Henry II, succeeded his older brother Richard I as King. He was one of the most unpopular monarchs in English history, and was best known for his battles with the nobility, which resulted in his signing the Magna Carta in 1215. King John died of dysentery and was succeeded as King of England by his 9-year-old son Henry III.

. Estonian politician. Mr. Pung was Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1932 and Speaker of the National Council (upper chamber) from 1938-1940. He was arrested during the U.S.S.R. invasion of Estonia, and died in a Soviet gulag in Sverdlovsk Oblast on October 11, 1941, eight days after his 65th birthday.

Bob O'Farrell
. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. O'Farrell was a catcher with the Chicago Cubs (1915-1925, 1934); St. Louis Cardinals (1925-1928, 1933, 1935); New York Giants (1928-1932); and Cincinnati Reds (1934), batting .273 with 51 home runs and 549 runs batted in in 1,492 games. He was named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1926, when he hit .293 with 7 homers and 68 RBIs in 147 games, helping the Cardinals win their first World Series championship. Mr. O'Farrell batted 0 for 3 in 3 games with the Cubs in their 1918 World Series loss to the Boston Red Sox, and hit .304 with no homers and 2 RBIs in 7 games in the 1926 World Series, for a total of .269 in 10 games. He managed the Cardinals in 1927, leading them to a 92-61 record and a second-place finish, 1½ games behind the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mr. O'Farrell managed the Reds in 1934, but was fired on July 26 with the team in last place with a record of 30-60-1, and rejoined the Cubs 11 days later. He finished his playing career in the minor leagues in 1938, and operated a recreation hall in Waukegan, Illinois. Mr. O'Farrell died on February 20, 1988 at the age of 91.

Vincent Dantzer, who became Mayor of Edmonton after Bill Hawrelak had been disqualified in 1965 because of a land deal, was elected mayor, receiving 64,233 votes to 54,544 for Mr. Hawrelak and 5,105 for Alex Latta in the Edmonton civic election. Mr. Hawrelak blamed his defeat on complacency, and said that he wouldn't run for office again. Aldermen elected, in order of number of votes received, were: Morris Weinlos; Ivor Dent; Julia Kiniski; Les Bodie; James Bateman; Frank Edwards; Ed Leger; Una Evans; Cec Purves; Angus McGugan; Neil Crawford; and Reg Easton. . 1st President of Mozambique, 1975-1986. Mr. Machel, a Marxist-Leninist, was a longtime member of Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO) (Mozambique Liberation Front), and was active in fighting against Portuguese colonial rule. He was President from Mozambique's independence in 1975 until his death with 33 others in the crash of the governmental Tupolev Tu-134 jetliner. Mr. Machel was succeeded as President by Joaquim Chissano.

Literature
Short story writer Alice Munro won the inaugural Marian Engel Award for lifetime achievement in Canadian literature.

Disasters
A Mozambican government Tupolev Tu-134 jetliner crashed into a mountain in South Africa while en route from Mbala, Zambia to the Mozambican capital of Maputo, killing Mozambican President Samora Machel and 33 others, including government ministers and officials. . U.S. actress. Miss Kirk, born Phyllis Kirkegaard, appeared in various movies and television programs, mostly in the 1950s. She played Nora Charles, with Peter Lawford as Nick Charles, in the television series The Thin Man (1957-1959).
