Born on this date
Charles Bedaux
. French-born U.S. management consultant and explorer. Mr. Bedaux moved to the United States in 1906, and became an American citizen. He was a pioneer in the field of work measurement, and became a millionaire by persuading industrial firms to use his Bedaux System of Human Power Measurement, to the displeasure of labour unions. Mr. Bedaux financed the Bedaux Canadian Sub-Arctic Expedition in 1934, which departed Edmonton, heading westward through northern British Columbia. The expedition was intended to test the new Citroën half-track cars, but failed to reach its destination. Mr. Bedaux hosted the 1937 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and was on friendly terms with the Nazis and the Vichy French regime during World War II. On January 13, 1943, Mr. Bedaux and his son were arrested by American authorities in Algeria, where he was reportedly supervising the construction of a German pipeline. Mr. Bedaux was kept in custody for a year without charge, but was sent to the United States in early 1944, where, as an American citizen, he was charged with treason and trading with the enemy. Mr. Bedaux committed suicide with an overdose of barbiturates on February 18, 1944 at the age of 57, while in Federal Bureau of Investigation custody in Miami.

Baseball
World Series
St. Louis Cardinals 3 @ New York Yankees 2 (St. Louis won best-of-seven series 4-3)

In one of the most dramatic moments in World Series history, Pete Alexander, 39, who had pitched a complete game victory the previous day, entered the game in relief of Jesse Haines (2-0) with the bases loaded and 2 out in the bottom of the 7th inning and struck out Tony Lazzeri to end the threat and then followed with 2 scoreless innings as the Cardinals edged the Yankees before 38,093 fans at Yankee Stadium to win their first World Series championship ever. Babe Ruth hit a solo home run--his fourth homer of the series, a record--in the 3rd inning to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead, but 2 Yankee errors led to 3 unearned runs for the Cardinals in the 4th. The Yankees halved the lead with a run in the 6th. With 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, Mr. Ruth drew a base on balls, with Mr. Alexander's 3-2 pitch just barely missing the strike zone. With 1 strike on Bob Meusel, Mr. Ruth suddenly decided to steal second base; catcher Bob O'Farrell's throw to second baseman Rogers Hornsby was in plenty of time to apply the tag for the out to end the series. Losing pitcher Waite Hoyt (1-1) allowed 5 hits in 6 innings before being relieved by Herb Pennock, who allowed 3 hits in 3 innings.
