Marcel Cerdan
. Algerian-born French boxer. Mr. Cerdan compiled a record of 111-4 in a professional career that began in 1934. He knocked out Tony Zale in 12 rounds to win the world middleweight title on September 21, 1948, and after two more wins in non-title bouts, lost the belt to Jake LaMotta on a 9-round knockout on June 16, 1949. Mr. Cerdan was on his way to the United States for a rematch with Mr. LaMotta when he was one of 37 passengers and 11 crew members killed in the crash of their Lockheed Constellation plane on October 28,1949. Mr. Cerdan was 33 at the time of his death.

James Whitcomb Riley, 66
. U.S. poet. Mr. Riley, a lifelong resident of Indiana, wrote about 1,000 poems, and became known as the "Hoosier Poet" and the "Children's Poet." His poems included Little Orphant Annie (1885) and The Raggedy Man (1888). Mr. Riley died after a stroke.

In San Francisco, a bomb exploded on Market Street during a Preparedness Day parade, killing 10 and injuring 40.

The Cincinnati Reds scored 5 runs in the 8th inning to defeat the Boston Bees 7-4 before 3,492 fans at National League Park in Boston.

Tom Carey singled home Beau Bell with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the St. Louis Browns a 6-5 win over the New York Yankees before 1,500 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. New York left fielder George Selkirk batted 4 for 4 with a home run and 3 runs batted in, while third baseman Red Rolfe hit a single, double, and triple. Winning pitcher Ivy Andrews pitched a complete game to improve his record for the season to 2-8.

The Philadelphia Athletics trailed 5-0 after 2 innings, but scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning and 4 in the 5th to defeat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 at Navin Field in Detroit in a game that was completed in 1 hour 45 minutes.

The Chicago White Sox scored a run with 1 out in the bottom of the 12th inning to defeat the Washington Nationals 3-2 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Winning pitcher John Whitehead and losing pitcher Earl Whitehill both pitched complete games.

The Royal Canadian Navy commissioned HMCS Brandon (K149) at Quebec City. Reports reaching Turkey alleged that Germans and Croats had executed at least 80,000 Serbians because of guerrilla activity since the Axis had occupied Yugoslavia.

U.S. Federal Loan Administrator Jesse Jones said that the United States had offered to buy raw materials from the U.S.S.R. in exchange for Soviet purchases of war material. The U.S. Reconstruction Finance Corporation announced a $425-million loan at 3% interest per year to the United Kingdom to pay for war purchases contracted before Lend-Lease had been passed.

U.S. Census Bureau director J.C. Capt estimated that the country's population would grow at a steadily decreasing rate until about 1985, after which a decline would set in. He predicted a population peak of 153 million in 1980.

East German swimmer Kornelia Ender, 18, equalled her own world record in the 100-metre women's butterfly and broke the world mark in the 200-metre butterfly within the space of 27 minutes in Montreal. Ken Griffey hit 3 solo home runs for the Atlanta Braves, but the Braves lost 5-4 in 11 innings to the Philadelphia Phillies before 14,249 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

Reggie Williams hit a 2-run home run to climax a 3-run rally in the top of the 9th inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 before 10,325 fans at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Mr. Williams played all three outfield positions during the game.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored 2 runs in the first inning and 8 in the 4th as they defeated the San Francisco Giants 10-7 before 23,673 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis in a game that was interrupted by a brawl in the 7th inning.

Glenn Davis hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Houston Astros a 1-0 win over the Montreal Expos before 19,271 fans at the Astrodome. Nolan Ryan struck out 14 and allowed only a double by Mike Fitzgerald in the 5th inning before being relieved by Dave Smith after issuing 2 bases on balls in the top of the 10th. Mr. Smith then quelled the Montreal rally. Losing pitcher Floyd Youmans pitched a complete game, allowing just 3 hits.

The New York Yankees scored 6 runs in the first 2 innings as they beat the Texas Rangers 9-1 before 26,099 fans at Yankee Stadium. Dennis Rasmussen allowed 3 hits in 6 2/3 innings as he improved his record for the season to 12-2.

Walt Terrell allowed just 3 hits in 8 2/3 innings and Johnny Grubb hit 2 solo home runs as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Minnesota Twins 3-0 before 18,974 fans at Tiger Stadium. Losing pitcher Bert Blyleven allowed just 4 hits in pitching a complete game.

Phil Bradley singled home Spike Owen with 2 out in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Seattle Mariners an 8-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays before 10,152 fans at the Kingdome in Seattle. The Blue Jays scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning, the last 3 coming on a home run by Jesse Barfield.
