Jack McCandless
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. McCandless was an outfielder with the Baltimore Terrapins (1914-1915), batting .217 with 5 home runs and 35 runs batted in in 128 games. He played 188 games in 3 seasons in the minor leagues (1916-1917, 1920), hitting .264 with 5 home runs. Mr. McCandless died on August 17, 1961 at the age of 70.

Zail Singh
. 7th President of India, 1982-1987. Mr. Singh, a member of the Indian National Congress party, held several cabinet posts before being unanimously nominated to the presidency, where he served with Prime Ministers Indira and Rajiv Gandhi. Mr. Singh died on December 25, 1994 at the age of 78, several weeks after suffering serious injuries in a car accident.

Aleksey Maresyev. U.S.S.R. military aviator. Colonel Maresyev joined the Soviet Air Force in 1937 and had shot down four German aircraft in World War II before being shot down in April 1942, and having both his legs amputated above the knee. He eventually mastered the use of prostheses, and returned to active duty a year later, and shot down three German planes in a dogfight in August 1943. Col. Maresyev was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in August 1943, joined the Communist Party in 1944, and retired from the Air Force in 1946. He obtained a doctorate in history in 1956, and eventually became a member of the Supreme Soviet. Dr. Maresyev died of a heart attack on May 19, 2001, two weeks after his 85th birthday.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch was awarded the 1941 Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service by a newspaper; Westbrook Pegler of the New York World-Telegram won in the category of General Reporting, and Reuben Maury of the New York Daily News won for Editorial Writing. A group award was given in the category of General Correspondence to American news reporters in the war zones of Europe, Asia, and Africa since the beginning of World War II.

The U.K. Royal Air Force claimed that its bombers had scored direct hits on the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in a raid on Brest. Reports from London stated that the United Kingdom had rejected an offer from Turkey to mediate the Anglo-Iraqi War.

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered "a substantial increase in heavy bomber construction." The U.S. House of Representatives debate on seizure of alien ships precipitated a dispute over the prospect of convoying supplies to Britain.

Dr. Martin H. Dawson of Columbia University, addressing a medical meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, described a new chemical substance known as penicillin. He said the substance, developed from a special strain of mold in bread and Roquefort cheese, may prove more useful than the sulfanilamides.

British and American companies in the Netherlands East Indies renewed their contracts to supply Japan with 1.8 million tons per year.

Sheffield Farms Company Inc., Borden Company, and four of their affiliates were indicted on charges of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act by selling milk at higher prices than those charged by their affiliates.

The International Military Tribunal for the Far East began trials in Tokyo, with 28 Japanese military and government officials accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Nationalist Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek proclaimed Nanking the capital of China, as Nationalist-Communist clashes were reported in Manchuria and the provinces of Shansi and Hupeh.

Diplomacy
Arab opposition to the Anglo-American report urging increased Jewish migration to Palestine heightened with a call by Arab Higher Committee Chairman Jamal el Husseini urging Palestinian Arabs to resist "external enemies."

Politics and government
Mariano Ospina Pérez was elected President of Colombia, the first conservative to win the office since 1930. He took 41.4% of the vote, while the Liberal Party was split, with Gabriel Turbay receiving 32.3% of the vote and Jorge Eliécer Gaitán Ayala receiving 26.3%.

In a national referendum in France, voters rejected, by a small margin, a proposed constitution that was supported by Communists and Socialists.

World events
Jose Antonio Bonilla, former dean of the Dominican University Law Department, sought sanctuary in the Mexican embassy as Dominican Republic dictator Rafael Trujillo cracked down on "subversive" elements.

Agriculture
Argentine President Juan Peron notified the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration that Argentina would ship 500,000 tons of wheat and corn to Europe before June.

Montreal forward Dave Balon passed the puck from the corner in front of the Detroit net, and it went in off centre Henri Richard's knee as he was sliding on his knees into Detroit goalie Roger Crozier at 2:20 of the 1st overtime period at Olympia Stadium to give the Canadiens their second straight Stanley Cup championship. The Red Wings argued that Mr. Richard had swept the puck into the net with his hand. Mr. Crozier was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs.

Doug Rader's 3-run home run was the key hit as the San Diego Padres scored 4 runs after there were 2 out and nobody on base in the top of the 6th inning and defeated the Montreal Expos 6-4 before 6,085 fans at Jarry Park in Montreal in the Wednesday night Expos Baseball telecast on CBC.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs combined for 26 runs, 37 hits, 7 errors, and 9 home runs as the Dodgers won 14-12 before 6,126 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Henry Cruz hit 2 of the Dodgers' 7 homers, while Rick Monday hit both Chicago home runs. Don Sutton pitched the first 5 innings for Los Angeles; he allowed 14 hits; 2 bases on balls; 7 runs--6 earned--and was the winning pitcher.

George Foster and Ken Griffey hit consecutive run-scoring singles with 1 out in the top of the 11th inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 2-0 win over the New York Mets before 19,121 fans at Shea Stadium in New York.

The Baltimore Orioles scored 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to beat the Chicago White Sox 2-0 before 6,570 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Jim Palmer pitched a 2-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Goose Gossage, who allowed just 5 hits. The game was played in 1 hour 59 minutes.

The New York Yankees broke a 4-4 tie with 6 runs in the top of the 8th inning to defeat the California Angels 10-4 before 25,790 fans at Anaheim Stadium. Catfish Hunter allowed 6 hits and 4 earned runs in pitching a complete game to win the pitchers' duel over Nolan Ryan.

Alan Ashby singled home Ron Pruitt and George Hendrick with 2 out in the top of the 9th inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Cleveland Indians a 3-1 win over the Oakland Athletics before 2,100 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Pat Dobson allowed 7 hits and no earned runs in pitching a complete game victory. Stan Bahnsen started on the mound for Oakland and allowed 6 hits and 1 earned run in 7 1/3 innings; he was relieved by Paul Lindblad, who was in turn relieved by Rollie Fingers, who took the loss.
