Born on this date
Samuel Chase
. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, 1796-1811. Justice Chase represented Maryland at the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. He was appointed Chief Justice of the District Criminal Court in Baltimore in 1788 and Chief Justice of the Maryland General Court in 1791. Justice Chase was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President George Washington, but when Thomas Jefferson became President in 1801, he wanted to weaken Federalist influence over the courts. Justice Chase was impeached on the grounds that his political biases influenced his decisions, but he was acquitted by the Senate and remained on the Court until his death on June 19, 1811 at the age of 70. His acquittal was regarded as an important precedent upholding the independence of the judiciary.

Señor Wences
. Spanish-born U.S. ventriloquist. Señor Wences, born Wenceslao Moreno, moved to the United States in the mid-1930s. He achieved his greatest popularity in the 1950s and '60s, appearing 48 times on The Ed Sullivan Show. Señor Wences died on April 20, 1999, three days after his 103rd birthday.

Jack Johnson (36-8-5-3) defeated Jim McCormick (4-7-2) in a heavyweight bout at Association Park in Topeka, Kansas when Mr. McCormick was disqualified in the 8th round by referee Dave Porteous for biting Mr. Johnson's shoulder in a clinch. The fight occurred the day after Mr. Johnson had knocked out Black Bill in Pittston, Pennsylvania.

Win Maung
. 3rd President of Burma, 1957-1962. Win Maung was appointed President by Prime Minister U Nu, and held the office until he was deposed in a military coup led by General Ne Win. Win Maung died on July 4, 1989 at the age of 73.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Prime Minister of Ceylon/Sri Lanka, 1960-1965, 1970-1977, 1994-2000. Mrs. Bandaranaike was the wife of Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike; she entered politics after the assassination of her husband in 1959, became Chairwoman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, and led the party to victory in the July 1960 election. Mrs. Bandaranaike attempted to form a socialist republic, and oversaw the drafting of a new constitution in 1972, when the country became the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Mrs. Bandaranaike was appointed to a third term as Prime Minister after her daughter Srima Dissanayake was elected President in 1994. Mrs. Bandaranaike retired as Prime Minister in August 2000, two months before her death on October 10, 2000 at the age of 84.

. Prime Minister of the Netherlands, 1918-1925, 1929-1933. Mr. Ruijs de Beerenbrouck was a member of the Roomsch Katholieke Staatspartij (RKSP), the Roman Catholic party. He served as President of the House of Representatives from 1925-1929 and again from 1933 until his death.

Al Bowlly, 43
. Mozambican-born U.K. singer. Mr. Bowlly grew up in Johannesburg and lived in several countries before moving to England in 1928. He became one of the most popular crooners of the early 1930s, but his career suffered after he developed problems with his voice because of a wart in his throat. Mr. Bowlly was killed when a German parachute mine landed outside his flat in London, and the explosion propelled his bedroom door into him, causing fatal head injuries.

The Quebec government tabled a bill to establish an education fund from the natural resources of the province. The objective of Bill 48 was to completely erase the debt of school boards, which stood at $90 million.

The Quebec Legislative Assembly passed a law granting an operating license to the Hollinger North Shore Exploration Company on a territory of 300 square miles in New Quebec.

The Quebec Legislative Assembly passed a law which gave legitimacy to the Corporation of Catholic Teachers of the Province of Quebec (CIC), founded the previous year. On the NBC Game of the Week telecast, the Cincinnati Reds routed the San Francisco Giants 11-0 at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati in a game whose start was delayed for 45 minutes because of a swarm of bees that invaded the stadium, sending most of the 21,219 fans scurrying to the concourse. Joe Morgan's 3-run home run in the 1st inning off Ed Halicki after singles by Pete Rose and Ken Griffey provided all the scoring needed. Fred Norman pitched a 4-hit shutout for the Reds.

The New York Mets scored 5 runs off Bruce Kison in the top of the 1st inning and 10 runs in the last 3 innings as they routed the Pittsburgh Pirates 17-1 before 13,082 fans at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. Jerry Koosman pitched a 9-hit complete game for the win.

U.S. Army Special Forces units arrived in Iraq and began to select sites for refugee camps.

Diplomacy
U.S.S.R. President Mikhail Gorbachev arrived in Tokyo to begin three days of talks with Japanese Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu. Addressing the Japanese Diet, Mr. Gorbachev said that the Soviet Union was reducing its military presence in the Pacific Ocean, and he appealed to the Japanese to invest in the Soviet economy.

Canadian Minister for External Relations Monique Landry promised Iran $6.5 million to help Kurdish refugees; the total Canadian relief of $16.6 million was added to $2 million for Turkish camps.

Unions representing 235,000 U.S. railroad workers went on strike, with the main issues being the number of workers needed to run a freight train and the number of miles an employee had to travel to earn a day’s pay.
