. U.K.-born Canadian brewer and politician. Mr. Keith, a native of Scotland, emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1817, and founded Alexander Keith's Brewery in Halifax in 1820. He was Mayor of Halifax (1843-1844, 1852-1853) and President of the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia from 1867 until his death on December 14, 1873 at the age of 78.

Lincoln Loy McCandless, 81
. U.S. politician. Mr. McCandless, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Hawaii in 1882, constructing artesian wells. A Republican, he represented the 5th District in the Republic of Hawaii House of Representatives from 1898-1900. When Hawaii became a territory of the United States in 1900, Mr. McCandless served as a Senator from 1902-1906. He switched his allegiance to the Democratic Party in 1908 to challenge Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole, the territory's non-voting delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. Mr. McCandless lost several elections, but was finally elected in 1932, serving as Hawaii's delegate to the House from 1933-1935, losing his bid for re-election in 1934. He died 17 days after his 81st birthday.

Silvestre Revueltas Sánchez, 40. Mexican composer and conductor. Mr. Revueltas was a violinist who served as assistant conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico (1929-1935), composing film scores, chamber music, and orchestral works. He had difficulty earning money in the late 1930s, and drank himself to death.

Steve Ferrughelli rushed 1 yard for the first Montreal touchdown at 1:30 of the 2nd quarter, and Phil Price returned an interception 56 yards for the other Alouette touchdown 2 minutes and 11 seconds later.

The Roughriders came back from a 10-0 2nd-quarter deficit to hand the Eskimos their only loss at home in 1975 before a record Clarke Stadium crowd of 26,303. Dave Cutler opened the scoring with a 47-yard field goal in the 1st quarter; it was the 172nd of his 7-year career, breaking the CFL record formerly held by Larry Robinson of the Calgary Stampeders (1961-1974). Mr. Cutler added a 55-yard FG on the last play of the quarter and a 32-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter before missing a 14-yard FG for a single to make the score 10-0. Saskatchewan quarterback Ron Lancaster completed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tom Campana for a touchdown, converted by Jack Abendschan, with 2:54 remaining in the 1st half to make the score 14-7. The Roughriders took command with 3 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter: a 20-yard pass from Mr. Lancaster to Steve Mazurak; a 63-yard interception return by Lee Benard; and a 10-yard rush by George Reed, all converted by Mr. Abendschan. The Eskimos scored their only touchdown with 11:19 remaining in the game on an 80-yard punt return by Mike Fink and a 2-point convert pass from Bruce Lemmerman to Stu Lang. Mr. Reed led all rushers with 27 carries for 115 yards, while Roy Bell led the Edmonton ground game with 9 carries for 70 yards. Edmonton's George McGowan led all receivers with 85 yards on 8 receptions. Edmonton defensive end Fred James made the only pass reception of his 9-year CFL career when he went into the game on offense and caught a pass for 28 yards. It was the final CFL game for Edmonton defensive end Leroy Jones and the final game in an Edmonton uniform for middle linebacker Sam Britts; both players went on the injured list after the game and missed the rest of the season.

Tom Dixon converted Mr. Dunigan’s touchdown and added 3 field goals and a single. Bernie Ruoff accounted for all the Hamilton scoring with 3 field goals and 3 singles. Hamilton quarterback Ken Hobart completed 16 of 32 passes for 177 yards and 2 interceptions and rushed 13 times for 59 yards. George Works of the Tiger-Cats carried 14 times for 42 yards and threw 1 pass for a 24-yard completion. Chris Skinner of the Eskimos rushed 12 times for 97 yards, including a 40-yard run to the 1-yard line to set up Mr. Dunigan’s touchdown. Mr. Dunigan rushed 12 times for 43 yards. Milson Jones added 46 yards rushing and 41 receiving for the Eskimos. The Eskimos were without wide receiver Chris Woods, who pulled up lame in practice the day before. Doyle Alexander pitched a 5-hitter as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 5-1 before 44,608 fans at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto to clinch their first American League East Division title, taking a 2-game lead over the second-place Yankees with 1 game remaining. Dave Winfield drove in the only New York run, becoming the first Yankee since Joe DiMaggio in 1942 to score 100 runs and bat in 100 in the same season. Keith Smith played the 8th inning at shortstop for the Yankees in the 6th and last game of his 2-year major league career.

Willie Wilson singled home Pat Sheridan in the winning run with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Kansas City Royals edged the Oakland Athletics 5-4 before 32,949 fans at Royals Stadium to clinch the American League West Division pennant.

Gary Roenicke's 2-run home run off Bill Scherrer with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the Baltimore Orioles a 7-6 win over the Detroit Tigers before 21,094 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. John Candelaria allowd 5 hits and 3 bases on balls, but no runs in 5 innings to get the win, as the California Angels defeated the Texas Rangers 3-1 before 8,853 fans at Arlington Stadium. California first baseman Rod Carew batted 0 for 2 with a base on balls and scored the game's first run on a 2-run home run by Reggie Jackson, while making 7 putouts in the field, in the 2,469th and last game of his 19-year major league career. A jury in Cincinnati found that city’s Contemporary Arts Center and its director, Dennis Barrie, not guilty of obscenity charges for exhibiting 175 photographs of the late disgusting sodomite Robert Mapplethorpe. Five of the photos depicted sadomasochistic or homoerotic acts, and two others showed children with exposed genitals. The imbeciles on the jury agreed that the photos showed serious artistic merit and hence did not meet the Supreme Court’s definition of obscenity.

After 150 years, The Herald broadsheet newspaper in Melbourne, Australia was published for the last time as a separate newspaper.

The Argos, who had scored 286 points--an average of 53.7 per game--in their previous 5 games, were held without a touchdown, as the Blue Bombers made 1 interception and recovered 3 Toronto fumbles before a Winnipeg Stadium crowd of 30,484. The Argos fumbled the opening kickoff on their own 45-yard line, and Winnipeg scored just 2 plays later, as Mr. Burgess completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Robert Mimbs. Trevor Kennerd converted and added a 42-yard field goal less than 3 minutes later to make the score 10-0. Lance Chomyc kicked a 21-yard field goal to cut the lead to 10-3 before Warren Hudson rushed 1 yard for a touchdown to make the score, after Mr. Kennerd’s convert, 17-3 at the end of the 1st quarter. The scoring in the last 3 quarters consisted of 2 more field goals and a single by Mr. Kennerd and a punt single by Winnipeg’s Bob Cameron. Mr. Chomyc added 2 more field goals for the Argos. Mr. Mimbs rushed 24 times for 104 yards to pass 1,000 yards for the season; he added 48 yards on 3 pass receptions. Mr. Burgess completed 22 of 35 passes for 265 yards. Toronto quarterback Rickey Foggie completed just 13 of 33 passes for 149 yards and an interception, but led his team’s ground attack with 85 yards on 8 carries. For Argo running back Lorenzo Rivers, the game was his last in the CFL. He had come into the league two year earlier as a pre-season sensation with the British Columbia Lions and had been touted as their answer to Henry "Gizmo" Williams of the Edmonton Eskimos, but Mr. Rivers was unable to duplicate his pre-season punt return heroics in regular season play.

In the morning session, Mr. Thomas spoke on the topic Learn to Discern, while Mr. Hunt's topic was A Cup of Trembling, the title of his new book. The two men held a question-and-answer session with pastors in the afternoon. In the evening, Mr. Hunt spoke on The Gospel of God, and Mr. Thomas's topic was Ichabod.

. U.S. chemist. Dr. Hammond taught at several institutions, including California Institute of Technology (1958-1972), and won numerous awards. He developed "Hammond's postulate" in 1955, and was known as the father of organic photochemistry.
