Joe Kapp completed a 90-yard pass to Willie Fleming in the 4th quarter for the winning touchdown as the defending Grey Cup champion Lions defeated the Blue Bombers before 21,012 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Bill Munsey rushed for 67 yards and scored the other B.C. touchdown.

Baseball
The Milwaukee Braves sold pitcher Harvey Haddix back to the Baltimore Orioles, just three days after purchasing him. He had refused to report to the Braves, opting to retire. Mr. Haddix, whose last appearance with Baltimore had been on August 28, didn't appear in another game, despite being reacquired by the Orioles.

The Los Angeles Angels of the American League announced that they were changing their name to the California Angels. The Angels had been playing their home games at Dodger Stadium, home of the National League's Los Angeles Dodgers, since 1962, and were preparing to move into Anaheim Stadium in 1966.

The change of name from Los Angeles to California didn't help the Angels, as they lost 8-1 to the New York Yankees before 5,198 fans at Dodger Stadium. Mickey Mantle hit a 3-run home run in the 1st inning and singled in another run in the 2nd. Tom Tresh added 2 doubles and scored 3 runs. Whitey Ford pitched a 4-hitter to improve his record for the season to 14-9, and hit 2 singles.

Pinch hitter Bob Chance singled in 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to give the Washington Senators a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox before 3,098 fans at District of Columbia Stadium. Don Lock hit his 15th home run of the season for Washington, while Jim Gosger hit his 7th and Tony Conigliaro his 26th for Boston.

With 2 out and nobody on base in the top of the 9th inning, pinch hitter Floyd Robinson singled, Ken Berry drew a base on balls, and J.C. Martin doubled them both home to give the Chicago White Sox a 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader before 6,485 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Messrs. Robinson and Berry hit home runs as the White Sox won the second game 9-3 to complete the sweep. Pete Ward also homered for Chicago, and he and Mr. Robinson each scored 2 runs and batted in 3.

Eddie Mathews singled, advanced to second base on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Mike de la Hoz in the top of the 11th inning to give the Milwaukee Braves a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds before 11,049 fans at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Darrell Osteen made his major league debut as a relief pitcher for Cincinnati, pitching the 3rd and 4th innings without allowing a run.

Mr. Conigliaro, who hadn't played since 1971 because of vision problems resulting from a 1967 beaning, had attempted a comeback in 1975 and had made the Boston roster to start the season, but had been demoted in June after hitting just .123 (7 for 57), with 2 home runs and 9 runs batted in in 21 games. He had started strongly with Pawtucket but then had slumped badly, hitting .203 with 3 homers and 12 RBIs in 37 games. In 8 seasons in the major leagues Mr. Conigliaro batted .264 with 166 home runs and 516 runs batted in in 876 games.

The Philadelphia Phillies claimed relief pitcher John Montague on waivers from the Montreal Expos. Mr. Montague was 0-1 with an earned run average of 5.60 in 12 games with Montreal in 1975, and 7-8 with a 1.73 ERA in 18 games with the Memphis Blues of the AAA International League.

The Kansas City Royals scored 3 runs in the top of the 12th inning to defeat the Chicago White Sox 4-1 before 4,198 fans at White Sox Park. Al Fitzmorris allowed 6 hits and an unearned run in 11 innings to get the win. Losing pitcher Jim Kaat (19-11) allowed 14 hits and just 1 earned run in a complete game.

Matt Dunigan completed 22 of 32 passes for 293 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed 8 times for 56 yards and a touchdown as the Eskimos came back from a 17-1 1st-quarter deficit to post their first road win of the season. Larry Hogue returned a Neil Lumsden fumble 35 yards for a touchdown to give the Stampeders, after J.T. Hay’s convert, a 7-0 lead just 1:48 into the game. Larry Mason, who carried 8 times for 31 yards in his first CFL game, rushed 2 yards for another converted touchdown later in the quarter to extend the lead. The Eskimos settled down, and Milson Jones rushed 11 yards for a touchdown midway through the 2nd quarter. The Stampeders led 20-11 at halftime and 22-19 after 3 quarters, as Mr. Dunigan scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to further reduce the deficit. The Eskimos, who had made several lineup changes on defense and had switched from a 3-4 front seven to a more traditional 4-3 set, made 3 interceptions and recovered a Calgary fumble, and eventually translated the turnovers into points. In the 4th quarter, Mr. Dunigan threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Marco Cyncar and 31 yards to Chris Skinner. Tom Dixon converted both and punted for a single to give the Eskimos a 34-21 lead. Just when it seemed the game was in hand, Ron Hopkins of the Stampeders blocked a punt and linebacker Knox Culpepper, playing his first CFL game, returned it 16 yards for a converted touchdown, pulling the Stampeders within 6 points with 1:17 remaining. The Stampeders got the ball back, and quarterback Joe Barnes found former Eskimo Tag Rome for a 44-yard completion to the Edmonton 54-yard line, although Mr. Barnes had crossed the line of scrimmage, and the play should have been called back. However, Mr. Barnes then threw 2 incomplete passes and was sacked on third down. Eskimo running back Larry Cowan played perhaps his finest CFL game, rushing 15 times for 83 yards and catching 7 passes for 88. Mr. Rome led all receivers with 104 yards on 3 receptions. Gary Thompson, who had failed to make the Eskimos in 1983, played his first regular season game in the CFL and made an interception, with other key interceptions coming from rookie linebacker John Dailey and safety Lou DesLauriers. Former Montreal Alouette and Concorde James Zachery played his first game as an Eskimo at defensive tackle and recovered a Calgary fumble. Jack Williams, who had been cut from the Eskimos and the Stampeders during the pre-season of 1982 before playing with the Ottawa Rough Riders, played his only regular season game as an Eskimo at defensive end. Edmonton slotback Rick House suffered a season-ending shoulder separation when he was tackled at the end of a 38-yard completion. Oddly, it was in about the same place in the field that Edmonton receiver Pete Ribbins had suffered a shoulder separation during the 1977 Labour Day game. Meanwhile, former Eskimo slotback Dan Runge played his first game as a Stampeder. 18,253, the largest crowd of the season thus far, attended the game on a beautiful sunny afternoon at McMahon Stadium.

Ron Ingram made a spectacular diving end zone catch of a 43-yard pass from Ken Hobart with 2:17 remaining in the game to lift the Tiger-Cats to victory before an Ivor Wynne Stadium crowd of 15,549. It was the only Hamilton touchdown of the game, and came about 8½ minutes after Mark Stevens, Montreal’s third quarterback to see action during the game, had completed a 75-yard pass to Dwaine Wilson for the Concordes’ only touchdown. Bernie Ruoff kicked 4 field goals and a convert for the Tiger-Cats, while Roy Kurtz kicked 3 field goals and a convert for the Concordes. Turner Gill started at quarterback for Montreal and Gerry Dattilio briefly relieved him, but they each surrendered 2 interceptions. Mr. Hobart was relieved for a time by Jeff Tedford, who was ineffective.

Kent Austin completed 18 of 27 passes for 390 yards and 4 touchdowns, and rushed for a touchdown of his own to lead the Roughriders to victory in their annual Labour Day weekend game before 31,121 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. The big blow was a team record 107-yard bomb from Mr. Austin to Jeff Fairholm at 9:50 of the 1st quarter, giving the Roughriders a 10-3 lead after Dave Ridgway’s convert. Saskatchewan led 41-10 at halftime and coasted from there. Don Narcisse caught 2 of Mr. Austin’s scoring passes and Mark Guy had the other. Orville Lee rushed for touchdown in the 4th quarter, and backup quarterback Jeff Bentrim completed the rout by throwing a touchdown pass to Lucius Floyd. Robert Mimbs scored the lone Blue Bomber touchdown on a 1-yard rush in the 2nd quarter. The Roughriders rolled up 639 yards net offense against the CFL’s best defense. Ray Elgaard of Saskatchewan led all receivers with 146 yards on 6 receptions.
