Charles Cochrane-Baillie, 2nd Baron Lamington, 80
. U.K. politician. Lord Lamington was Governor of Queensland from 1896-1901 and Governor of Bombay from 1903-1907.

William A. McGuire, 59. U.S. playwright, screenwriter, and director. Mr. McGuire wrote and directed Broadway plays in the 1910s and '20s, and screenplays from the 1910s until his death from uremia. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Great Ziegfeld (1936).

War
Italian troops conquered the Egyptian town of Sidi Barrani. For the tenth consecutive night, London was attacked by German planes. Spanish Foreign Minister Serrano Suner arrived in Berlin for talks with German Fuehrer Adolf Hitler and Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop about Spanish conditions for entering the war.

Defense
The United States first adopted peacetime conscription when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 into law, setting October 16 as registration day. National Guardsmen began to report for induction into federal service for a year's training.

Politics and government
Rep. Sam Rayburn (Democrat--Texas), the longest-serving Speaker in the history of the United States House of Representatives, was first elected to the post. He served as Speaker from 1940-1947; 1949-1953; and 1955 until his death in office on November 16, 1961 at the age of 79.

Religion
Vatican radio stated its opposition to all those who wished to create a new world order.

Rookie Johnny Lucadello hit his only 2 home runs of the season, one from each side of the plate, as the St. Louis Browns whipped the New York Yankees 16-4 before 1,343 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Only Wally Schang in 1916 had hit home runs from both sides in a game in the AL before.

John McCormack, 61
. Irish-born U.S. singer. Mr. McCormack was a tenor who was famous for performing both opera and popular music and was one of the world's best-selling recording artists in a career that spanned almost 40 years. Mr. McCormack died after several years of declining health.

U.S. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Paul Porter officially opened a new nationwide network, the Associated Broadcasting Corporation, with 19 affiliated stations.

Literature
The New York Herald Tribune listed So Well Remembered by James Hilton as the best-selling fiction book, and Up Front by Bill Mauldin as the best-selling non-fiction book.

British Royal Navy Admiral Sir Cecil Harcourt accepted the formal surrender of Hong Kong from Japan.

The U.S. Navy announced plans to tow the Japanese battleship Nagoto 500 miles to sea and test the effect of an atomic bomb on it.

Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) in Japan General Douglas MacArthur ordered Japanese Prime Minister Prince Naruhiko Higahsi-Kuni to impound and report to him within 15 days all property, assets, and records controlled wholly or in part by the Japanese government and Axis Nationals in Japan.

Labour
To support their demand for a 25% pay increase, the Congress of Industrial Organizations United Steel Workers of America claimed that the industry's war profits after taxes had risen 113% from 1940-1944.

Officials of the CIO United Retail, Wholesale & Department Store Employes Union threatened Montgomery Ward and Company in Chicago with a strike unless it agreed to bargain with the union after the return of the company's property by the Army.

. Indian-born U.K. politician. Mr. Amery, a Conservative, was First Lord of the Admiralty (1922-1924); Secretary of State for the Colonies (1924-1929); and Secretary of State for India and Burma (1940-1945). He's perhaps best remembered for his speech in the House of Commons in May 1940 denouncing Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and demanding his resignation.

World events

Losing pitcher Luis Tiant allowed just 6 hits and 2 earned runs in pitching a complete game. George Thomas hit a home run in the 7th inning for the second run of the game. Bill Davis made his major league debut with the Indians, flying out to Boston center fielder Jim Gosger in the 8th inning.

The Goombahs, the flag football team captained by this blogger, played their first game in the lunchtime intramural B league, scoring a 14-0 upset over Ian's Idiots. Harry Fernie completed a touchdown pass to Dwayne Ward on the first play from scrimmage, and another to Robert Burgin late in the game. He also connected with Mr. Ward for a 2-point convert.

Premier Frank Moores led his Progressive Conservative government to re-election in the Newfoundland provincial election, taking 30 of 51 seats in the House of Assembly. The Liberal Party, led by Ed Roberts, won 16 seats, while the Reform Liberal Party, led by former (1949-1972) Premier Joey Smallwood, captured 4 seats, and Steve Neary was elected as an independent Liberal in LaPoile. The most recent election, in 1972, had resulted in a House of Assembly composed of 33 PCs and 9 Liberals.

Democratic Party candidate John Durkin won a special election for a United States Senate seat in New Hampshire.

The Stampeders made 7 interceptions and returned 2 for touchdowns as they upset the Roughriders before a sellout crowd of 27,188 on a rainy Tuesday night at McMahon Stadium. Ron Lancaster started at quarterback for Saskatchewan and was intercepted on the game's first play by Vernon Roberson, leading to a 40-yard touchdown pass from Joe Pisarcik to Rick Galbos at 2:32 of the 1st quarter. Just 1:04 later, Larry Cates returned an interception 65 yards for a TD. Linebacker Joe Forzani returned another interception 41 yards for a touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in the 1st half for the only touchdown of his 8-year CFL career. Willie Burden, who rushed 28 times, for 154 yards, ran 8 yards for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Steve Molnar rushed 13 yards for the only Saskatchewan touchdown with 58 seconds remaining in the game. Mr. Lancaster, who completed 7 of 16 passes, left the game with a leg injury on the second-last play of the 1st half and was relieved by Randy Mattingly, who completed just 3 of 15 passes and threw 4 interceptions. The teams combined to complete just 4 of 21 passes in the 2nd half, and fumbled 5 times. It was the first CFL game for Calgary defensive end Dave Means.

Baseball
Pittsburgh Pirates' second baseman Rennie Stennett became the second player in major league history and the only one in the 20th century to bat 7 for 7 in a single game as the Pirates routed the Chicago Cubs 22-0 before 4,932 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Mr. Stennett had 2 doubles and a triple, and had 2 hits in each of the 1st and 5th innings; his first hit was off starting and losing pitcher Rick Reuschel, and his last hit was off Paul Reuschel. The only other player to bat 7 for 7 in a game was Wilbert Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles on June 10, 1892.

Don DeMola issued a base on balls to Del Unser with the bases loaded and 2 out in the bottom of the 18th inning, scoring Roy Staiger with the winning run, as the New York Mets edged the Montreal Expos 4-3 before 6,956 fans at Shea Stadium in New York. Bob Bailey led off the game with a home run and was promptly replaced defensively by rookie Ellis Valentine. Mr. Bailey's homer was his 5th of the season and his 118th and last in a Montreal uniform, the team record at the time.

Junior World Series
Tidewater Tides (IL) 5 @ Evansville Triplets (AA) 8 (Evansville won best-of-seven series 4-1)

The Tides took a 5-0 lead, but the Triplets responded with 5 runs in the 5th inning, 2 in the 7th, and 1 in the 8th to win the series before 2,261 fans at Bosse Field in Evansville, Indiana. Marv Lane hit a 3-run home run off Bob Myrick and Ed Kurpiel hit a 2-run homer off relief pitcher Nino Espinosa as the Triplets tied the game in the 5th inning. In the 7th inning, John Gamble singled home Bruce Kimm and Ed Kurpiel scored on a squeeze bunt by Boots Day as the Triplets took the lead to stay. Tom Makowksi, who relieved starting pitcher Mark Lemongello in the 5th inning, retired the last 13 batters he faced to get the win. This was the last Junior World Series game ever played. The competition was first held in 1904, and was intermittent after that. The 1975 Junior World Series was the 51st edition.

Gordon Gould, 85
. U.S. physicist. Professor Gould worked on the Manhattan Project from March 1944-January 1945, but was fired from the atomic bomb project for being a member of the Communist Party. He claimed credit for inventing the laser, but he had to fight a battle over patents for almost 30 years. Prof. Gould was eventually issued 48 patents, and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1991.

Camorra organized crime boss Paolo Di Lauro was arrested in Naples, Italy.
