The Chicago Cubs moved into first place in the National League with their 11th straight win, an 18-14 slugfest over the Brooklyn Dodgers before 10,000 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Winning pitcher Charlie Root allowed 11 hits and 9 runs--all earned--in 7 innings. The Dodgers used 7 pitchers, including Harvey Green and Bob Barr. For Messrs. Green and Barr, it was the second and last major league game for both pitchers. Mr. Green entered the game with 2 out in the 6th inning and walked the first two batters he faced, followed by a single by Phil Cavaretta. Mr. Barr then entered the game and issued a base on balls before getting the third out, after the Cubs had scored 8 runs in the inning.

Diplomacy
Japanese Prime Minister Prince Naruhiko Higashi-Kuni asked that the United States "forget Pearl Harbor" as the Japanese would forget the devastation of their homeland by U.S. bombers.

U.S. Ambassador to Argentina Spruille Braden said that the "Nazi element" in the Argentine government sought to undermine friendly relations with the United States.

Defense
The U.S. Army announced plans to release 13,000 doctors, 3,500 dentists, 25,000 nurses, and other medical personnel by January 1, 1946.

Ford Motor Company shut down all of its automobile plants, laying off 50,000 workers, due to "crippling and unauthorized strikes" against companies supplying it with parts. The lockout was directed against the United Auto Workers of America and other unions demanding a 30% wage raise in the auto industry.

California second baseman Winston Llenas batted 0 for 4 and made 1 putout and 1 assist in his 300th and final major league game.

Roy Howell singled home Tom Grieve with 2 out in the bottom of the 13th inning to conclude a 3-run rally as the Texas Rangers came from behind to win their second straight extra-inning game over the Chicago White Sox by a score of 9-8 before 6,705 fans at Arlington Stadium. Jim Gideon started on the mound for Texas and allowed 7 hits, 5 bases on balls, and 6 runs--5 earned--in 5 2/3 innings in his only major league game.

Mike Schmidt hit his 35th and 36th home runs of the season and Dick Allen added his 10th as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 13-7 before 16,294 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chicago relief pitcher Donnie Moore made his major league debut, relieving starter Steve Stone with 1 out in the 3rd inning and allowing 3 hits and 2 bases on balls, but no runs in 2 2/3 innings. Steve Carlton allowed 4 hits and 2 earned run in 8 innings to get the win before being relieved by Randy Lerch, who was also making his major league debut. Mr. Lerch entered the game to begin the bottom of the 9th inning with the Phillies leading 13-2, and he allowed 4 hits, a base on balls, and 5 earned runs, the last 4 coming on a grand slam by Tim Hosley with 2 out.

Bill Laxton pitched a 2-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Mark Fidrych, who allowed just 6 hits in pitching a complete game, as the Tides edged the Triplets before 1,209 fans at Metropolitan Memorial Park in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Laxton faced just 30 batters an allowed just one runner to reach second base. The game's only run came in the 6th inning when Mark DeJohn singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bruce Boisclair, and scored on a 2-out single by Ron Diggle.

Iraqi troops raided several Western embassies in Kuwait City. Four French citizens were seized, then released. French President Francois Mitterand denounced the incident.

The United Kingdom announced that it was sending an armoured brigade of 8,000 troops and 120 tanks to Saudi Arabia.

Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney announced that a squadron of CF-18 fighter jets would join Canadian forces in the Persian Gulf. The 18 jets, with about 450 flyers and ground crew, were to leave a NATO base in West Germany to provide cover for the three ships Canada had already sent to the gulf. In Mr. Mulroney’s words: "Not in 40 years has the case for Canadian action been more compelling." He also raised to $74 million the amount of Canadian aid to Kuwaiti refugees.

Economics and finance
U.S.S.R. President Mikhail Gorbachev submitted a modified version of the "Shatalin plan" to the Supreme Soviet that would retain central authority over financial matters.

The United States Labor Department reported that producer prices for finished goods had increased 1.3% in August.

Canadian Energy Minister Jake Epp approved the $5.2-billion Hibernia offshore oil project, led by Mobil Oil.

Spar Aerospace bought the defense contracts of bankrupt Leigh Instruments Ltd. of Ottawa for $10 million.

Two missed field goal attempts by Trevor Kennerd were the difference as the Stampeders edged the Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium. In the 2nd quarter he missed from 46 yards, and Ron Hopkins returned it 128 yards for a touchdown. Mr. Kennerd missed a 30-yard attempt with 7 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter that would have won the game for the Blue Bombers. Andy McVey scored the first Calgary touchdown on a 1-yard rush in the 1st quarter. The only Winnipeg touchdown came in the 3rd quarter on a 24-yard pass from Danny McManus to Eric Streater. Mr. Streater led all receivers with 111 yards on 5 receptions.

Baseball
Ken Griffey, Sr. and Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Seattle Mariners hit consecutive home runs in the 1st inning off Kirk McCaskill, but the Mariners lost 7-5 to the California Angels before 34,180 fans at Anaheim Stadium. California right fielder Dave Winfield hit 2 home runs and drove in 5 runs.

The Oakland Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 9-1 before 34,091 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum as Dave Stewart reached the 20-win plateau for the fourth straight year.

Robert Wise, 91
. U.S. movie director, editor, and producer. U.S. film director and producer. Mr. Wise won the Academy Award for Best Picture and shared the Academy Award for Best Director with Jerome Robbins for West Side Story (1961), and won both awards by himself for The Sound of Music (1965). He was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar for The Sand Pebbles (1966) and for the Best Film Editing Academy Award for Citizen Kane (1941). Mr. Wise died four days after his 91st birthday.

Frances Newton, 40. U.S. murderess. Mrs. Newton was executed by lethal injection in Texas for the April 7, 1987 murders of her husband Adrian, 23; her son Alton, 7; and her daughter Farrah, 21 months.
