Born on this date
Morrie Aderholt
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Aderholt was a second baseman and left fielder with the Washington Nationals (1939-1941); Brooklyn Dodgers (1944-1945); and Boston Braves (1945), batting .267 with 3 home runs and 32 runs batted in 106 games. He played his first major league game on his 24th birthday, hitting a home run and a single, and remains the only major league player to have multiple hits and a home run in a debut game on his birthday. Mr. Aderholt also hit safely as a pinch hitter in his last major league game on September 30, 1945. He was working as a scout with the Nationals when he died of a heart attack in Sarasota, Florida on March 18, 1955 at the age of 39.

Andrew L. Harris, 79
. U.S. politician. Mr. Harris, a Republican, was a general with the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War, and was one of the heroes of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. He was the last Civil War general to serve as governor of a state when he was Governor of Ohio from 1906-1909.

Arthur Currie, then a Brigadier, was appointed General commanding the 1st Division of the new Canadian Corps. It was the first completely Canadian fighting unit in France, and eventually consisted of four infantry divisions.

The luxury liner SS City of Benares left Liverpool with British children being evacuated to Canada to escape World War II. The ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat during the night about 600 miles out to sea, and only 13 of the over 90 children survived. Italian troops attacked from Libya across the Egyptian border. Italian forces based in Ethiopia penetrated 120 miles into Kenya. In a daylight attack on Chungking, Japanese bombers destroyed the German embassy.

Diplomacy
The U.S. Treasury Department barred the Panamanian ship Norseland from American waters for three months because its captain had flown the American flag in the war zone.

Communications
Under a new decree, cable and radio stations in Japanese-controlled China refused to accept messages from belligerent countries.

The last Japanese troops in Burma formally surrendered to British forces in Rangoon.

U.S. President Harry Truman withdrew from private sale all public lands in the United States "which contain deposits of radioactive mineral substances," reserving their use for the government.

Lord John Maynard Keynes presented the British case to the U.S. for financial aid, which was deemed essential to maintain a decent standard of living in the immediate postwar period.

The U.S. Reconstruction Finance Corporation announced a new seven-point program to aid banks and industry in reconversion. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee approved a rewritten unemployment compensation bill, which rejected the $25 weekly maximum payment for 26 weeks.

Johnny Rodgers totalled 178 combined yards in rushing, receiving, and kick returns and scored 2 touchdowns and a 2-point convert to lead the Alouettes over the Rough Riders at Autostade. Moody Jackson scored the only Ottawa touchdown on a 43-yard pass from Tom Clements.

Peter Liske completed 20 of 30 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown to Terry Bailey to lead the Lions over the Argonauts before 24,281 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver. Mr. Bailey also rushed for a touchdown, as did running back Wayne Moseley. Eric Guthrie relieved Mr. Liske and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ross Clarkson. Doyle Orange, who led all rushers with 97 yards on 13 carries, scored the Toronto touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Bill Bynum. Toronto tight end Peter Muller suffered a season-ending knee injury, and it was the last game in the 4-year CFL career of Toronto receiver Eric Allen. Joe Kapp (#22) and Willie Fleming (#15), B.C. stars of the 1960s, had their jersey numbers retired in a halftime ceremony.

Brian Fryer punted 41 yards for a single late in the 4th quarter to give the Golden Bears their win over the Bisons at University Stadium in Winnipeg. The winning point came shortly after the Golden Bears tied the game on a 7-yard touchdown rush by Buddy L'Hirondelle and a 2-point convert pass from Brian Larsen to Mr. L'Hirondelle, who suffered a career-ending shoulder separation making the catch. Rick Wagner scored the Manitoba touchdown, converted by Rick Pearson, who added 2 singles. The first 2 Alberta points came on singles off missed field goal attempts by Pat Barry and Joe Poplawski. Mr. Fryer caught 4 passes for 107 yards, returned 1 kickoff for 21 yards, and punted 7 times for a 37.0-yard average.

Don Siler completed 13 of 21 passes for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Dan Diduck rushed 22 times for 139 yards, including a run of 57 yards, to lead the Dinosaurs over the Huskies at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon. Dave Osiowy kicked 3 field goals in the 1st half for Saskatchewan, converted Mr. Harrington's 18-yard touchdown on a pass from Barry Fraser in the 4th quarter, and added a single on the subsequent kickoff.

The San Francisco Giants erupted for 7 runs against Don Gullett and Clay Kirby in the 5th inning as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 9-2 before 5,453 fans at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Gary Thomasson hit a single, double, and home run for the Giants. Jim Barr pitched a 7-hit complete game victory. Cincinnati pitcher Tom Carroll allowed 2 hits and 2 bases on balls, but no runs in the 7th and 8th innings in his 28th and last major league game.

Andy Messersmith pitched a 5-hitter and the Los Angeles Dodgers scored 4 unearned runs in the bottom of the 8th inning as the result of 2 errors as they shut out the Atlanta Braves 6-0 before 17,929 fans at Dodger Stadium. Frank LaCorte allowed 4 hits and 2 runs--1 earned--in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. Preston Hanna made his major league debut on the mound for Atlanta, pitching the 6th and 7th innings without allowing a run.

Junior World Series
Evansville Triplets (AA) 6 @ Tidewater Tides (IL) 1 (Evansville led best-of-seven series 2-0)

Bill Slayback and Steve Grilli combined to pitch a 7-hitter for the Triplets before 2,917 fans at Metropolitan Memorial Park in Norfolk, Virginia. The eventual winning run was scored in the top of the 5th inning when Art James, with 2 out and a count of 1 ball and 2 strikes, bunted. The bunt appeared to be foul for an inning-ending third strike, but it bounced back into fair territory for an infield single before reaching third base, and John Gamble scored from third base. Evansville put the game away with 3 runs in the 8th inning on singles by Bruce Kimm, Ed Kurpiel, and Mr. Gamble. Ron Diggle led Tidewater with a single and 2 runs batted in. Jeffrey Grose, playing his first game with the Tides after being called up from Jackson of the Texas League, started on the mound and took the loss.

Willard Reaves rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and Tom Clements completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joe Poplawski in the 4th quarter. 30,593 fans at Winnipeg Stadium saw the Blue Bombers post the CFL’s first shutout since July 16, 1982, which also had the Blue Bombers blanking the Concordes--36-0 at Olympic Stadium in Montreal. The Concordes had just 7 first downs and 64 yards net offense, as the Winnipeg defense sacked quarterbacks Turner Gill and Mark Stevens 8 times. Montreal almost broke the shutout in the 2nd half on a punt into the Winnipeg end zone, but Sean Kehoe decided to run the ball out, and the Blue Bombers were able to move out of harm’s way.

Tracy Ham threw 3 touchdown passes to Craig Ellis to lead the Eskimos’ attack before 26,830 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. It was the only game as a CFL head coach for Jim Young, the great B.C. receiver from 1967-1979. Lary Kuharich had been fired several days earlier, and Bob O’Billovich, his permanent replacement, wasn’t yet available for the job, so Mr. Young filled in for this game. The Lions scored the game’s first touchdown in the 1st quarter on a 28-yard option pass from running back Chris Skinner to Ray Alexander. Mr. Ellis led all receivers with 9 receptions for 163 yards. Mr. Ham completed 20 of 40 passes for 305 yards, and rushed 10 times for 90. Doug Flutie started at quarterback for B.C., but completed just 13 of 31 passes for 212 yards and 2 interceptions. Former University of West Virginia star Major Harris relieved Mr. Flutie late in the game, completing 1 of 4 passes for 22 yards.

Crime
A Cook County Circuit Court jury in Chicago convicted stable owner Ken Hansen, 62, of the October 16, 1955 murders of Bobby Peterson, 13; Tony Schuessler, 13; and John Schuessler, 11. The story of the murders and trial was told in the book Shattered Sense of Innocence: The 1955 Murders of Three Chicago Children by Richard C. Lindberg and Gloria Jean Sykes (2006).

Oil
The Canadian government of Prime Minister Jean Chretien sold most of its stake in Petro-Canada through a share offering that brought in $1.8-billion.

Economics and finance
The U.S. Federal Reserve Board said that it saw indications of an ongoing economic upswing across the country, such as an apparent strengthening of construction activity in many areas. Business activity, however, was found to be declining in New York and Dallas. The Fed reported that inflationary pressures were weak.

The United States Labor Department reported that consumer prices had risen 0.1% in August.

Julio César Turbay Ayala, 89
. 25th President of Colombia, 1978-1982. Mr. Turbay, a member of the Liberal Party, held several cabinet and diplomatic posts before taking office as President. His administration implemented the Security Statute, giving more power to the military in dealing with suspected revolutionary guerrillas.

Toni Fritsch, 60. Austrian soccer and football player. Mr. Fritsch was a striker with Rapid Wien from 1963-1971, scoring 15 goals in 123 games, and scoring 2 goals in 9 matches with the Austrian national team from 1965-1968. He played in the National Football League as a kicker with the Dallas Cowboys (1971-1975); San Diego Chargers (1976); Houston Oilers (1977-1981); and New Orleans Saints (1982), scoring 758 points in 125 regular season games. Mr. Fritsch played in the United States Football League with the Houston Gamblers (1984-1985), scoring 252 points in two seasons. Mr. Fritsch had the distinction of playing on national championship teams in Austria with Rapid Wien in 1964, 1967, and 1968, and on a Super Bowl championship team with the Cowboys in 1971-72. He became a businessman in later years, and collapsed and died of heart failure outside a restaurant in Vienna.
