Mr. Calder was first elected as a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), which became the New Democratic Party in 1961. Mr. Calder served in the cabinet of Premier Dave Barrett from 1972-1973, but was expelled from cabinet after being found in an embarrassing sexual situation. Mr. Calder crossed the floor to join the Social Credit Party in 1975, and was re-elected, but lost his seat by a single vote in the 1979 election. His most lasting impact came with Calder vs. Attorney General of British Columbia, a case which established that Aboriginal title exists in Canadian law. Willard Hershberger, 30
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Hershberger, a backup catcher with the Cincinnati Reds, was hitting .309 and was seeing considerable playing time while starting catcher Ernie Lombardi was injured. On July 31 the Reds were leading the New York Giants 4-1 with 2 out in the 9th inning, and pitcher Bucky Walters got 2 strikes on each of the next 4 batters, but Harry Danning and Burgess Whitehead each hit home runs with a runner on base, and the Giants won 5-4. Mr. Hershberger, whose father had committed suicide in 1929, blamed himself for calling the wrong pitches. On August 3, the Reds were in Boston to play a doubleheader against the Bees. Mr. Hershberger was scheduled to play in the second game, but when he didn’t show up between games, Reds’ travelling secretary Gabe Paul placed a call to his room at the Copley Plaza Hotel. The call went unanswered, and Mr. Paul dispatched Dan Cohen, a friend of Mr. Hershberger’s, to the hotel to get him. Mr. Cohen found Mr. Hershberger slumped over the bathtub with his throat slashed. He was the only active major league player to commit suicide during the season. In 160 major league games from 1938-1940, Mr. Hershberger batted .316 with no home runs and 70 runs batted in.

Hank Reese, 65
. U.S. football player. Mr. Reese played center and linebacker with the New York Giants (1933-1934) and Philadelphia Eagles (1935-1939) of the National Football League and New York Yanks of the American Football League (1940). He was a member of the Giants' NFL championship team in 1934, and added kicking to his duties when he was with the Eagles, scoring 39 points in 5 seasons.

Jack Molinas, 43. U.S. basketball player and criminal. Mr. Molinas was basketball's version of Hal Chase, the legendary baseball first baseman who was perfectly capable of playing the game straight and brilliantly, but who preferred to play it crookedly. Mr. Molinas was a forward with Columbia University, who set a team record for points in a game. Even then, he was betting on games involving his own team, and fixing games or deliberately missing shots in order to beat the point spread. In the 1953 National Basketball Association draft, he was selected in the first round, and fourth overall, by the Fort Wayne Pistons. He played 32 games with the Pistons, scoring 350 points (11.6 per game) before being banned for betting on games. Mr. Molinas was the key figure in fixing U.S. college basketball games in the late 1950s and early '60s, and served five years in prison after the scandal broke in 1961. He continued to engage in shady activities, and was shot to death while standing on the back deck of his Hollywood, California house in what apparently was a mob hit.
