Zeke Bonura doubled in the tying run in the bottom of the 13th inning and then stole home in the bottom of the 15th to give the Chicago White Sox a 9-8 win over the New York Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader before 15,000 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Lou Gehrig hit 2 home runs for the Yankees, including one in the 15th inning that gave the Yankees an 8-7 lead. The Yankees won the second game 7-5 in a game that was called because of darkness after 7 innings.

Franz Werfel, 54
. Austrian writer. Mr. Werfel was a novelist, author, and playwright who was best known for the novels The Forty Days of Musa Dagh (1933) and The Song of Bernadette (1941). His works were banned by the Nazis, and he and his family fled to the United States in 1940, where he remained for the rest of his life.

War
The United States War Department said that for the present it would draft 50,000 men per month. U.S. Army General Douglas MacArthur informed the Japanese that U.S. fleet units were moving into Sagami Bay, just south of Tokyo. Nationalist Chinese troops won the race with Communist troops to enter Shanghai and Nanking. The U.S.S.R. announced that Soviet troops had completed occupation of the 32-island Kuril chain, stretching from the northern tip of Japan to the Kamchatka peninsula in the sea of Okhotsk.

Bernie Ruoff kicked a 33-yard field goal with 1:48 remaining in the game to break a 22-22 tie and Chuck Ealey rushed for 82 yards--76 in the 2nd half--to lead the Blue Bombers in a comeback from a 21-9 3rd-quarter deficit to defeat the Stampeders before a capacity crowd of 25,210 at Winnipeg Stadium. Jim Washington rushed 16 times for 84 yards, and Richard Crump added 71 yards as the Blue Bombers amassed 237 yards rushing. The Stampeders rushed for 200 yards, led by Willie Burden's 30 carries for 171 yards. Mr. Ealey threw just 8 passes, completing 4 for 99 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to Bob LaRose in the 3rd quarter to start the Winnipeg comeback. Mr. Crump rushed 7 yards for a TD later in the quarter to put the Blue Bombers ahead 22-21. Mr. Washington rushed 3 yards for the first Winnipeg touchdown with 53 seconds remaining in the 1st half. Mr. Burden rushed 1 yard for a touchdown to open the scoring in the 1st quarter, and Joe Pisarcik completed a 12-yard TD pass to Rick Galbos 1:21 into the 3rd quarter. Mr. Pisarcik completed just 10 of 25 passes for 113 yards, and threw 2 key interceptions. Brian Herosian made an interception at the Calgary 19-yard line to set up Mr. Crump's touchdown, and Bob Toogood intercepted at the Calgary 37 to set up Mr. Ruoff's game-winning field goal.

Baseball
The Cleveland Indians claimed relief pitcher Bob Reynolds on waiers from the Detroit Tigers. Mr. Reynolds began the season with the Baltimore Orioles, posting a record of 0-1 with an earned run average of 9.00 in 7 games. He was traded to Detroit on May 29, and was 0-2 wit 3 saves and an ERA of 4.67 in 21 games with the Tigers.

Joe Morgan singled home Dave Concepcion and Pete Rose with 2 out in the top of the 9th inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs before 19,045 fans at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Reds were down to their last out with nobody on base when pinch hitter Terry Crowley singled to begin the rally, and Mr. Concepcion went in to run for him.

Thurman Munson batted 4 for 4 with a double, 2 runs, and 2 runs batted in, and Roy White was 4 for 5 with 2 runs as the New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 7-1 before 20,927 fans at Shea Stadium in New York. Stu Clarke, 79
. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Clarke was a shortstop with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1929-1930, batting .273 with 2 home runs and 23 runs batted in 61 games. His minor league career spanned at least the years 1924-1933.

Dick Wakefield, 64. U.S. baseball player. Mr. Wakefield was a left fielder with the Detroit Tigers (1941, 1943-1944, 1946-1949); New York Yankees (1950); and New York Giants (1952), batting .293 with 56 home runs and 315 runs batted in in 638 games, with all but the final 6 games being played with the Tigers. He batted .316 with 200 hits, including 38 doubles, in his rookie year of 1943, and batted .355 in 78 games in 1944. He then entered the U.S. Navy, and never played as well again.

Track and field
Zola Budd set a record for women in the 5,000-metre run at Crystal Palace in London with a time of 14 minutes, 48.07 seconds, 10 seconds faster than the old record.

Baseball
The Atlanta Braves, losers of 12 of their last 13 games, fired manager Eddie Haas and replaced him with Bobby Wine. The Braves had a 50-71 record at the time of the firing, 5th in the National League West Division. Gerald Perry singled home Dale Murphy with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Braves a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates before 4,125 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium in Mr. Wine's first game as manager.

Juan Samuel singled home Tom Foley with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres before 25,736 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.

Jesse Barfield drew a base on balls to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning and scored on a single by Steve Sax with 2 out to give the New York Yankees a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers before 31,045 fans at Yankee Stadium.

The Pirates rallied from a 19-10 3rd-quarter deficit to upset the defending Grey Cup champion Lions before 24,535 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Billy Joe Tolliver completed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Wayne Walker to begin the comeback in the 3rd quarter; Bjorn Nittmo converted and kicked a 19-yard field goal--his second FG of the game--in the 4th quarter to provide the winning margin. The only B.C. touchdown came on a 75-yard rush by Cory Philpot in the 3rd quarter.

Ricky Ray completed 28 of 39 passes for 438 yards and touchdowns to Jason Tucker and Kwame Cavil, while rushing for a touchdown of his own, as the Eskimos beat the Alouettes before 44,624 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. Mr. Tucker caught 9 passes for 217 yards. Ron McClendon rushed 9 times for 69 yards and a touchdown, and caught 6 passes for 50 yards.
