Born on this date
Stan Laurel
. U.K.-born U.S. comic actor. Mr. Laurel, born Arthur Stanley Jefferson, moved from England to the United States and worked in silent films for a number of years before producer Hal Roach teamed him up with Oliver Hardy. They made dozens of silent and sound comedy short and feature films, the best of which include Big Business (1929); Sons of the Desert (1933); and Way Out West (1937). They left the Roach studio after 1940, and the quality of their movies declined when they no longer were able to exercise any creative control. Laurel and Hardy made several mediocre and forgettable movies in Hollywood from 1941-1945, and a final film, Utopia (1950), for a French studio. The duo made a tour of English music halls in 1954 that was very well received, and they drew huge crowds wherever they went. Mr. Hardy died on August 7, 1957 at the age of 65 after a series of strokes. Mr. Laurel lived in a modest apartment in Santa Monica, California; he kept his number listed in the phone book in case any fans might want to pay him a visit. He died on February 23, 1965 at the age of 74.

Mr. Belloir was batting .217 with 1 home run and 27 runs batted in in 58 games with San Antonio in 1975.

Lee May hit a 3-run home run and added a single and double as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians 8-3 before 9,371 fans at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. Brooks Robinson also hit a 3-run homer for the Orioles. Jim Palmer started on the mound for Baltimore and allowed 9 hits and 3 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in improving his 1975 record to 11-3. Grant Jackson pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to get the first save by a Baltimore pitcher in 1975.

The New York Yankees scored 5 runs in each of the 2nd and 6th innings as they defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 10-7 before 10,901 fans at Shea Stadium in New York. Leadoff hitter Kerry Dineen, playing his third major league game, batted 3 for 4 with a double, run, and run batted in for the Yankees, while Ron Blomberg was 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, a run, and 3 RBIs. Gorman Thomas hit a grand slam for Milwaukee in the 4th inning.

The Boston Red Sox scored 4 runs in the top of the 12th inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers 6-2 before 17,074 fans at Tiger Stadium. Rookie Jim Burton started on the mound for Boston and allowed just 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings, while Detroit starter Mickey Lolich allowed 9 hits and 1 earned run in 9 innings.

The Charleston Charlies of the International League released righthanded relief pitcher Daryl Patterson, the day after he had broken a bone in his pitching hand when he slapped it against the clubhouse wall after accidentally touching a hot coffee urn. Mr. Patterson, who had pitched in 142 games with four major league teams from 1968-1971 and 1974 and was a member of the Detroit Tigers' World Series championship team of 1968, was 0-0 with an earned run average of 6.00 in 10 games with Charleston in 1975.
