Abigail Adams. U.S. First Lady, 1797-1801. Mrs. Adams, born Abigail Smith, married future President John Adams in 1764, and served as his closest adviser. She is best remembered for the 1,200 letters she and her husband exchanged, and is sometimes regarded as a founder of the United States. Mrs. Adams died of typhoid fever on October 28, 1818, less than a month before her 74th birthday.

John Alsop, 70. U.S. politician. Mr. Alsop, a cloth and dry goods merchant, served in the Province of New York Assembly was a delegate from New York to the 1st (1774) and 2nd (1775-1781) Continental Congresses. He was president of New York City's Chamber of Commerce from 1784-1785.

A committee was formed in Managua, Nicaragua to work for a union of Central American republics.

B.C. quarterback Joe Kapp connected with Willie Fleming for a 71-yard touchdown pass 6 minutes into the game and added TD passes to Mack Burton, Sonny Homer, and Pat Claridge as the Lions beat the Stampeders before 32,504 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver to win their second straight Western Football Conference title. The Lions built a 23-3 halftime lead and coasted to victory. The B.C. defense made 4 interceptions off Calgary quarterbacks Eagle Day and Jerry Keeling. It was the last game in Canadian football for Bobby Dobbs after 4 seasons as head coach of the Stampeders.

Western Ontario quarterback Bill Robinson completed a 63-yard touchdown pass to Jay Parry and linebacker Jim Cimba recovered a fumble by Toronto punter Mike Sokovnin in the Toronto end zone with 10 seconds remaining in the 1st half as the Mustangs held on to defeat the Varsity Blues before 24,777 fans and won the Vanier Cup. Backup quarterback Al Brenchley rallied the Toronto offense late in the game, but the drive stalled with a turnover on downs at the Western 15-yard line. UWO linebacker Ian Bryans was awarded the Ted Morris Memorial Trophy as the game's Most Valuable Player. It was the second Vanier Cup win for Frank Cosentino, who ended his five-year career as head coach of the Mustangs with this game.

Rene Moawad, 64. President of Lebanon, 1989. Mr. Moawad, a moderate Maronite Christian who enjoyed the support of Syria, was assassinated just 17 days after taking office as President. A bomb exploded along the route of his motorcade that killed Mr. Moawad and 23 other people.

After being threatened with death, 12 Green Berets who had been trapped in a San Salvador hotel when it had been taken over by Salvadoran rebels the previous day, were permitted to leave.
