Simon van der Stel. Dutch politician. Mr. van der Stel, the son of the first Dutch Governor of Mauritius, was Commander of the Cape Colony in South Africa from 1679-1691, when his title was changed to Governor. He served until his retirement in 1699, and was succeeded by his son Willem Adriaan. Simon van der Stel died on June 24, 1712 at the age of 72.

William Penn. English colonizer. Mr. Penn, the son of admiral and politician Sir William Penn, converted to Quakerism as a young man and founded the Province of Pennsylvania, which received its royal charter in 1681, as a Quaker colony. He devised a legal and political framework for Pennsylvania that emphasized individual liberties and limited government, which helped to inspire the United States Constitution a century later. Mr. Penn also planned and developed the city of Philadelphia. He returned to England in 1684 and spent the rest of his life there, except for a return to Pennsylvania from 1699-1701. Mr. Penn suffered severe financial problems in his later years, and died penniless on July 30, 1718 at the age of 73.

John See. U.K.-born Australian politician. Sir John moved to Australia with his parents in 1852, and eventually became a self-made shipping magnate. He represented Grafton in the New South Wales Legislature from 1880-1904, holding various cabinet posts before serving as Premier (1901-1904). Sir John's government passed labour reform and introduced women's suffrage, but poor economic conditions curtailed a public works program. Sir John retired in March 1904, and after several years of declining health, died on January 31, 1907 at the age of 62.

E.E. Cummings. U.S. poet. Edward Estlin Cummings, who preferred to use lower-case letters, wrote 2,900 poems, and was associated with modernist free-form poetry. He died of a stroke on September 3, 1962 at the age of 67.

Harry Brecheen. U.S. baseball pitcher. Mr. Brecheen, nicknamed "The Cat," played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1940, 1943-1952) and St. Louis Browns (1953), compiling a record of 133-92 and an earned run average of 2.92 in 318 games. The highlight of his career was probaly the 1946 World Series, when he won 3 games and posted an ERA of 0.45 as the Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox 4 games to 3. Mr. Brecheen served as the pitching coach with the Baltimore Orioles from 1954-1967. He died on January 17, 2004 at the age of 89.

Ray Davis. U.S. chemist and physicist. Dr. Davis shared the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics with Masatoshi Koshiba "for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos," and Riccardo Giacconi, who won "for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, which have led to the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources." Dr. Davis died on May 31, 2006 at the age of 91.

Erwin Rommel, 52. German military officer. Generalfeldmarschall Rommel was popularly known as "The Desert Fox" because of his leadership of German and Italian forces in the North Africa campaign during World War II. He was linked to the July 20, 1944 assassination attempt to assassinate German Fuehrer Adolf Hitler, and elected the least objectionable option of committing suicide by taking a cyanide pill.

Greek and British troops occupied Athens after converging by sea and air on the city, which German forces had held since April 1941. Yugoslavian partisans and Soviet troops fought their way into the streets of Belgrade. The largest number of B-29 bombers ever used in a single raid struck Okayama on Formosa. Chinese troops turned back a Japanese drive on Kwailin, Kwangsi Province, less than 17 mils northeast of the city.

The prosecution in the trial resulting from the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. opened its case, charging that U.S. then-President Richard Nixon had held a "multitude of meetings" in April 1973 and 1974 to revise "scenarios" and "lines" for handling the situation and sacrificing some people to the prosecution to save others. Those on trial were former presidential aides John Ehrlichman and Bob Haldeman; former Attorney General John Mitchell and his assistant Robert Mardian; and former attorney for the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP) Kenneth Parkinson.

Mr. Harrison's best season had come two years earlier, with 397 goals and 47 assists in 66 games with the Alberta Oilers, including a record 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in one game. He had yet to play in 1974-75. Mr. Buchanan was also two years past his best season, when he had scored 37 goals and 44 assists in 75 games with the Crusaders. In 4 games with Cleveland in 1974-75, he had 2 goals and no assists.

The Blue Bombers and Tiger-Cats were tied 12-12 before 27,491 fans on a rainy Thanksgiving afternoon at Ivor Wynne Stadium with time remaining for just one more play. Winnipeg kicker Walt McKee missed a field goal attempt, but Hamilton returner Mike Walker slipped on the wet artificial turf while punting the ball out of his end zone, and Winnipeg running back Jim Washington, downfield on coverage duties, picked the ball up at the Hamilton 5-yard line and walked into the end zone for as easy a touchdown as any punt returner ever had. The play was officially recorded as a 5-yard punt return.

Rookie quarterback Joe Pisarcik, making his first CFL start, led the Stampeders over the Eskimos before a Clarke Stadium record crowd of 24,214. Rookie receiver Bill Lide caught one of Mr. Pisarcik's passes for his only CFL touchdown. Veteran Calgary quarterback Peter Liske was used just to hold for placekicks in what turned out to be his last game as a Stampeder. Tom Wilkinson started at quarterback for the Eskimos but was knocked out early in the game with a concussion; Bruce Lemmerman played the rest of the game, but completed just 13 of 33 passes, and failed to produce a touchdown.

World events
A report surfaced concerning the existence of a manual, reported to be the work of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, written in Spanish and distributed among rebels opposing the Sandanista government of Nicaragua. The manual described how some government officials could be "neutralized"--a term that might mean "assassinated." The manual described various techniques for waging guerrilla warfare.

An Exhibition Stadium crowd that appeared smaller than the announced 30,406 went home disappointed when Calgary defensive end hit Toronto quarterback Condredge Holloway, and his pass was intercepted by defensive lineman Walter Ballard and returned 35 yards for a touchdown to break a 21-21 tie with 3:03 remaining in the game. Mr. Holloway was injured on the play, and reliever Joe Barnes appeared to have brought the Argonauts back with a touchdown pass to Jan Carinci, but Mr. Barnes was ruled to have crossed the line of scrimmage before throwing the ball. Toronto settled for a Hank Ilesic field goal with 1:02 remaining, but that was as close as they got. Greg Vavra went the distance at quarterback for the Stampeders, completing 23 of 48 passes for 359 yards and touchdowns to Tom Scott and Mike McTague. Mr. Scott’s touchdown was just his third of the season, but the 91st of his CFL career and his 88th career touchdown reception; it also turned out to be his last touchdown. Mr. Holloway, who alternated with Mr. Barnes, threw touchdown passes to Terry Greer and Mr. Carinci.

Dieter Brock threw 2 touchdown passes to Rocky DiPietro in the first 5:35 of the game, and the Tiger-Cats coasted to victory before 28,414 disgruntled fans at Taylor Field in Regina. The win kept Hamilton’s playoff hopes alive, while eliminating the Roughriders from contention for the eighth straight year. The loss put the rebuilding Edmonton Eskimos into the playoffs for the 13th straight season. Bernie Ruoff kicked 2 converts, 5 field goals, and 2 singles for the Tiger-Cats. The Roughriders snapped the shutout with just 17 seconds left in the game when Homer Jordan completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Stewart Fraser and then completed a pass to Mike Washington for a 2-point convert. Hamilton’s win occurred a few days after owner Harold Ballard had blasted his players as "overpaid bums."

Kirk Gibson hit 2 home runs and drove in 5 runs to lead the Tigers over the Padres before 51,901 fans at Tiger Stadium. Lance Parrish also homered as the Tigers won their first World Series since 1968. Relief pitcher Aurelio Lopez (1-0) was the winning pitcher, and Guillermo Hernandez picked up his second save of the series. Sparky Anderson, who had managed the Cincinnati Reds to World Series wins in 1975 and 1976, became the first manager to win World Series in both major leagues. The win touched off a night of rioting in Detroit.

Larry Willis caught 2 touchdown passes from Danny Barrett and made an end-zone recovery of a fumble by teammate Kennard Martin on a pass reception for another touchdown to lead the Stampeders over the Lions before only 16,355 fans at McMahon Stadium. Mr. Martin did succeed in taking a pass into the end zone for Mr. Barrett's fourth touchdown pass of the game. Mr. Barrett, who replaced ineffective starter Terrence Jones in the first quarter, finished with 15 completions in 25 attempts for 309 yards, while B.C. quarterback Matt Dunigan had a terrible game, completing just 7 of 25 passes for 90 yards. Mr. Willis caught 6 passes for 175 yards. The Lions jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Anthony Parker and a convert and field goal by Lui Passaglia, but it was all downhill from there. Tim Petros scored the first Calgary touchdown on a 1-yard rush in the second quarter. Mark McLoughlin added 4 field goals for the Stampeders.
