Born on this date
Dixy Lee Ray. U.S. politician. Miss Ray, a Democrat, was Governor of Washington from 1977-1981 and was the state's first female governor. She was a marine biologist who taught at the University of Washington from 1947-1972. Miss Ray wrote two excellent books that were critical of the environmental movement: Trashing the Planet (1992) and Environmental Overkill (1993). She died on January 2, 1994 at the age of 79.

Albéric Magnard, 49. French composer. Mr. Magnard wrote four symphonies and numerous chamber pieces. He was killed after shooting at invading German soldiers who were trying to seize his property, and became a French national hero.

German troops began an assault against French positions on high ground near the city of Nancy, beginning the Battle of Grand Couronné.

World events
William, Prince of Albania left the country due to opposition to his rule, after just six months on the throne. He first went to Venice and then to Germany.

The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds split a doubleheader at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The Lon Warneke went the distance as the Cubs won the opener 6-3 in 10 innings, with Benny Frey taking the loss. The Reds took the second game 6-4, with Allyn "Fish Hook" Stout beating Jim Weaver.

The St. Louis Cardinals dropped into a tie for second place in the National League, 6 games behind the New York Giants, when they lost a doubleheader to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. The Pirates won the first game 12-2, with Paul Dean the losing pitcher; Dizzy Dean failed to hold a lead in the second game, and the Pirates won 6-5. The Giants were rained out.

War
Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. France, New Zealand and Australia also declared war on Germany after the invasion of Poland, forming the Allies. The United Kingdom and France began a naval blockade of Germany that lasted until the end of World War II. This also marked the beginning of the Battle of the Atlantic.









Baseball
With a Sunday curfew impending and the Boston Red Sox leading the New York Yankees 7-5 in the top of the 8th inning before 27,000 fans at Fenway Park in Boston, the Yankees started making outs to get the game in, while the Red Sox started stalling. Two Yankees were intentionally walked, and then fans littered the field with cushions and debris to further slow the game down. Umpire Cal Hubbard forfeited the game to the Yankees, but he was subsequently overruled by American League President Will Harridge, who fined both managers (Joe McCarthy of the Yankees and Joe Cronin of the Red Sox), rolled the game back to the end of the 7th inning with the score tied 5-5, and ordered the game to be replayed. The game never was replayed, however, as the 2-game series between the teams at Fenway Park on September 26 and 27 was rained out. Boston won the first game 12-11.

František Drdla, 75. Czech musician and composer. Mr. Drdla had a successful career as a concert violinist, and wrote three operettas, a violin concerto, and several orchestral and chamber works, but was primarily known for composing light works for violin and piano.

The Finnish government reported an agreement with the U.S.S.R. to cease fighting at 8 A.M. the following day. U.S. troops in France occupied Lyons and pushed 36 miles beyond. As British troops entered Brussels, U.S. forces reached the Luxembourg border. Indian troops advancing along the Lyitkyina-Mandalay railroad occupied the village of Kyagiyon, while British troops closed in on Tiddim in western Burma.

Diarist Anne Frank and her family were placed on the last transport train from the Westerbork transit camp to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, arriving three days later.

Pauline Betz defeated Margaret Osborne to win the U.S. women's singles title in the national championships at Forest Hills, New York.

Winnipeg kicker George Fleming, playing with a painful pelvic inflammatory condition, missed 4 field goal attempts in what turned out to be his last game.

Don Sweet's fourth field goal of the game, a 40-yard kick with 5:27 remaining in the game, gave the Alouettes their win over the Argonauts before a CNE Stadium record crowd of 34,697. The game's only touchdown came in the 2nd quarter on a 42-yard interception by Dave Raimey of the Argonauts. A key play in the game came in the 2nd half with the Argonauts in possession of the ball on the Montreal 8-yard line. Toronto head coach John Rauch called for rookie halfback Ernie Carnegie to throw an option pass into the end zone; the pass was intercepted by Montreal defensive back Dickie Harris. For Mr. Carnegie, it was the only time in his 13-game CFL career that he touched the ball. For Mr. Rauch, the call helped to bring about the end of his coaching career; he was fired after this game and replaced as head coach by assistant coach Joe Moss. Mr. Rauch, who had become the Argonauts' head coach in 1973, left with a record of 10-10-2. A memorable part of the game occurred at halftime of the CBC telecast, when Tom McKee interviewed former Argonaut star Cookie Gilchrist. Mr. Gilchrist talked so long that, with the final commercial break approaching before the beginning of the 2nd half, Mr. McKee cast a frightened look back at the camera.

John Montefusco, making his major league debut, pitched 9 innings of relief to earn his first major league win and hit a home run in his first major league at bat as the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 before 25,187 fans at Dodger Stadium. Ron Bryant started on the mound for San Francisco and was relieved by Mr. Montefusco after failing to retire any of the 6 batters to face him (although one batter reached base on an error), and Mr. Montefusco went the rest of the way, allowing 6 hits and 1 run (earned), while walking 5 batters and striking out 7. In his first plate appearance, Mr. Montefusco drew a base on balls in the 2nd inning and scored on a grand slam by Gary Matthews. In the 3rd, he hit a 2-run homer with 2 out against Charlie Hough, who had entered the game in relief of starter and losing pitcher Doug Rau after Mr. Matthews' grand slam.

The Oilers scored a run in the 1st inning and 3 in the 3rd as they edged the Indians before 1,567 fans. John Denny was the winning pitcher over Pat Darcy.

The Indians scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to take a 6-0 lead, but the Dukes rallied for 5 runs in the top of the 9th before Joe Simpson grounded out to third baseman Roy Howell to end the game before 2,764 fans. Bob Johnson pitched 8 1/3 innings to get the win, with Jeff Terpko relieving him and finishing the game. Rex Hudson started and took the loss for Albuquerque.

Politics and government
The United States presidential campaign kicked into high gear. Democratic candidate Walter Mondale and running mate Geraldine Ferraro marched along Fifth Avenue in New York City, only to be greeted by mostly empty sidewalks at an early hour. In southern California, President Ronald Reagan said that if he were re-elected, America’s message to the world would be "You ain’t seen nothing yet."

World events
U.S. President Ronald Reagan denied that any U.S. government personnel had been involved in the rebel attack on a Nicaraguan military camp two days earlier. The two U.S. citizens who had been killed when their helicopter was shot down by Nicaraguan forces belonged to Civilian Military Assistance, which had been formed to support opponents of the Sandanista regime. Members of the small group, consisting of U.S. servicemen, had gone to Honduras to join the Nicaraguan Democratic Force. Tom Posey, head of the CMA, said that the two men who died had been training rebel pilots.

Disasters
At least 1,300 were killed and thousands more injured as Typhoon Ike battered the southern Philippines.

Big defensive plays highlighted the game before 26,208 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. Darryl Hall got things started for the Eskimos when he intercepted a Greg Vavra pass and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown at 4:46 of the first quarter. Matt Dunigan connected with Brian Kelly for a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Eskimos a 14-4 lead in the second quarter; it was Mr. Kelly’s 14th touchdown of the season. Just when the Eskimos appeared head for more points, Stampeder safety Darrell Moir intercepted a Matt Dunigan pass and returned it 106 yards for a Calgary touchdown with 59 seconds remaining. However, the Eskimos were able to move back downfield in a hurry, and Dave Cutler’s 20-yard field goal on the last play gave the Eskimos a 17-11 halftime lead. A single by J.T. Hay on the second half kickoff and a converted 30-yard touchdown pass from Mr. Vavra to Mike McTague, followed by a 92-yard punt single by Mr. McTague, gave the Stampeders a 20-17 lead early in the third quarter. However, Mel Jenkins fumbled a Johnny Evans punt, and Jeff Treftlin scooped up the ball and returned it 32 yards to give the Eskimos a 24-20 lead after the convert. A 78-yard single by Mr. McTague was followed by 2 Dave Cutler field goals, before Bernard Quarles, who had come off the bench in relief of Mr. Vavra, completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to former Eskimo Mike Levenseller. The Stampeders succeeded in getting the ball back in the last couple of minutes, but poor clock management prevented them from getting close enough to try a game-winning field goal. Mr. Levenseller caught 5 passes for 88 yards to lead all receivers, while another former Eskimo, Tom Scott, caught just 1 pass for 9 yards. Ken Newans, broadcasting the game on CFCN as the voice of the Stampeders, continually berated the Stampeders’ offense for its predictability. For the Eskimos, highlights included strong games from Dan Kepley and Dave Cutler. Mr. Kepley, in his first game since knee surgery several weeks earlier, played like the player he had been in the late 1970s and early ‘80s, while Mr. Cutler, who had been having a miserable season (partly because of a nagging quad muscle injury), was 3 for 3 in field goal attempts, and his 54-yard kick at 4:19 of the fourth quarter provided the margin of victory.

Only 12,888 fans showed up at Ivor Wynne Stadium to see the Tiger-Cats end their six-game losing streak. Hamilton quarterback Dieter Brock rushed for a touchdown and threw touchdown passes to Rocky Di Pietro and Keith Baker. Mr. Di Pietro’s touchdown reception was the 325th reception of his career, a Tiger-Cat record formerly held by Tommy Grant. The Concordes’ only touchdown came on a pass from backup quarterback Steve Smith to Brian De Roo, followed by a 2-point convert pass from Mr. Smith to Todd Brown.

Bruce Sutter broke a National League record with his 38th save of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets 7-3 before 18,347 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.

Died on this date
James Aubrey, 75. U.S. television executive. Mr. Aubrey was head of television programming with ABC from 1956-1958 and president of CBS from 1959-1965. During Mr. Aubrey's reign at CBS, the network consistently had the highest ratings of the three major American networks. It was said that no one ever dominated American television to the extent that Mr. Aubrey did. Mr. Aubrey ws accused of "dumbing down" television to cater to the lowest common denominator of audience tastes with such programs as The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-1971) and Gilligan's Island (1964-1967). Mr. Aubrey was nicknamed "The Smiling Cobra," led an afterhours life characterized by degeneracy, and made many enemies, so when the television ratings for CBS showed signs of declining in the early part of the 1964-65 season, he was fired. Mr. Aubrey was president of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios from 1969-1973, where he succeeded in cutting budgets and turning profits. He disappeared into relative obscurity during the last 20 years of his life.

Major Lance, 55. U.S. singer. Mr. Lance was best known for having hit singles with songs written by Curtis Mayfield, including The Monkey Time (1963); Hey Little Girl (1963); and Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um (1964).

Defense
Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin signed several agreements in Moscow. They agreed not to aim their nuclear weapons against each other, and pledged to reduce the number of troops each had massed along their common border. It was the visit to Moscow by a Chinese head of state since 1957.

Shawn Jones completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Armstrong and Mike Pringle rushed 83 yards for a TD as the Baltimore Football Club opened a 21-0 halftime lead and defeated the Pirates before 16,332 fans at Independence Stadium. Donald Igwebuike converted both touchdowns and added 4 field goals. Martin Patton scored the first Shreveport touchdown on a 1-yard rush in the 3rd quarter and backup quarterback Robert Cobb threw a 17-yard TD pass to Charles Thompson in the last minute of the game.
