A Clarke Stadium record crowd of 18,795 saw the Eskimos use a strong rushing game to end the Stampeders' streak of three straight shutouts. Johnny Bright, recently obtained from Calgary, led the Edmonton ground game with 18 carries for 78 yards. Quarterback Jackie Parker added 61 yards on 12 carries, Glenn Lippman rushed 9 times for 57 yards, and Rollie Miles added 48 on 6 carries. Howard Waugh led the Stampeders with 12 carries for 55 yards and Eddie Macon rushed 7 times for 41 yards.

The Imperials scored 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter--2 by Albert Richmond--to defeat the Dutchmen in Kitchener. Mr. Richmond rushed 4 yards for the winning touchdown on the last play of the game.

Montreal led 10-3 at halftime, but Mr. Anabo completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tommy-Joe Coffey and then handed off to Larry Ferguson--also playing his first CFL game--for an 11-yard touchdown rush. The Alouettes were without assistant coach Leo Cahill, who had resigned from the team because of differences with head coach Jim Trimble.

Baseball
The St. Louis Cardinals edged the New York Mets 4-3 in 25 innings in the longest night game in major league history to that date before 13,460 fans--including baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn and his wife--at Shea Stadium in New York. The game lasted 7 hours and 4 minutes, beginning at 8:08 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time on September 11, and ending at 3:12 A.M. September 12. The Mets led 3-1 with 2 out in the 9th, but St. Louis third baseman Ken Reitz hit a 2-run home run off New York starting pitcher Jerry Koosman to tie the game. The winning run scored when Bake McBride led off the 25th with an infield single off Hank Webb, who had just entered the game. Mr. Webb attempted to pick off Mr. McBride, but his throw was wild, and Mr. McBride went to third base and head for home plate. New York first baseman John Milner recovered the ball in foul territory and threw to catcher Ron Hodges at home, but Mr. Hodges dropped the ball for another error. Bob Forsch started on the mound for St. Louis and allowed 3 runs--2 earned--in 6 innings. Sonny Siebert, the Cardinals' seventh pitcher of the game, pitched 2 1/3 innings to get the win. Mr. Webb, the sixth New York pitcher, took the loss. His immediate predecessor, Jerry Cram, pitched 8 scoreless innings of relief. Wayne Garrett had a miserable game for the Mets, batting 0 for 10.

Gary Carter drove in 2 runs with a triple in the 3rd inning, hit a 3-run home run in the 5th inning, and singled in a run in the 9th as the Blues defeated the Red Wings before 3,259 fans. Rochester scored all its runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Royle Stillman, Mike Fiore, and Doug DeCinces singled to load the bases against Memphis starting pitcher Chip Lang. Terry Enyart came in to relieve Mr. Lang and gave up a grand slam homer to Mike Reinbach, giving the Red Wings a 4-2 lead. Mr. Enyart was the winning pitcher, with Don DeMola, who entered the game in the 7th inning, earning thea save. Mike Willis started on the mound for Rochester and took the loss.

The Chiefs scored 7 runs in the 6th inning and led 9-2 after 7 innings, but the Braves rallied for 6 runs in the 8th inning, falling just short in their comeback before 1,313 fans. Rick Bladt singled twice and drove in 2 runs for Syracuse in the 6th inning, when 12 men came to bat and had 9 hits. The deciding run scored in the 7th inning on an infield hit by Ken Bennett and 2 errors on a ground ball by M.L. Prince. Dave Pagan started on the mound for Syracuse and was the winning pitcher, but left in the 7th inning with a stiff arm and was relieved by Joe Pactwa. Steve Evenhus relieved Mr. Pactwa in the 8th and gave up a grand slam to Greg Foreman. Alan Closter started on the mound for Richmond and was tagged with the loss.

An unearned run in the bottom of the 1st inning stood up as the White Sox edged the Suns before 2,384 fans to win the SL championship. Jacksonville starting pitcher Randy Hammon hit Knoxville leadoff batter Fred Norton with a pitch. Mike Buskey then doubled to right-centre field, and Mr. Norton scored when right fielder Orestes Minoso bobbled the ball for an error. Pete Williams allowed 3 hits iin 6 2/3 innings, and Chuck Sprinkle retired the last 7 batters to earn the save. Mr. Hammon took the loss.

Jerry Voorhis, 83. U.S. politician. Mr. Voorhis, a Democrat, represented California's 12th District in the United States House of Representaives from 1937-1947. He was defeated in the 1946 election by Republican candidate Richard Nixon, becoming Mr. Nixon's first policial opponent. The 1946 campaign was the first example of the "red-baiting" methods used by Mr. Nixon in election campaigns.

Pope John Paul II spent the day in Montreal as he continued his Canadian tour.

Diplomacy
U.S. President Ronald Reagan said that he had invited Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko to the White House in an effort to ease U.S.-U.S.S.R. tensions. Democratic party presidential candidate Walter Mondale said he was pleased that the meeting would take place, but added that it was "pathetic" that it was happening for the first time in the middle of the president’s re-election campaign.

Died on this date
Jessica Tandy, 85. U.K.-born U.S. actress. Miss Tandy, a renowned stage actress, won Tony Awards for Best Actress in A Streetcar Named Desire (1947); The Gin Game (1977); and Foxfire (1982). She repeated her Brodway role in the made-for-television version of Foxfire (1987), and won an Emmy Award. Miss Tandy won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her starring performance in Driving Miss Daisy (1989). She often appeared in productions with her husband Hume Cronyn.

Luciano Sgrizzi, 83. Italian-born musician and composer. Mr. Sgrizzi was a pianist, organist, and harpsichordist who wrote his own works for piano, and transcribed and edited Italian music of the 17th and 18th centuries. He spent his last years in Monte Carlo.

William Obanhein, 69. U.S. police officer. Mr. Obanhein was a member of the police department of Stockbridge, Massachusetts from 1951-1985, eventually serving as police chief. He arrested folk singer Arlo Guthrie for littering in 1965, and was mentioned as "Officer Obie" in Mr. Guthrie's song about the incident, Alice's Restaurant Massacree (1967). When a fictionalized version of the incident was made into the movie Alice's Restaurant (1969), Mr. Obanhein played himself, saying that he would rather make a fool of himself on film than have someone else do it. He and Mr. Guthrie became friends, and remained so until Mr. Obanhein's death from an apparent heart attack.

Marvin Graves replaced Mr. Kerrigan and completed touchdown passes of 8 yards to Eric Drage in the 3rd quarter and 85 yards to Jeff Fairholm in the 4th quarter.

The Roughriders, leading 10-4 at halftime, erupted for 39 points in the 2nd half to rout the Blue Bombers before 29,618 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Warren Jones started at quarterback and threw a touchdown pass to Larry Thompson in the 2nd quarter. Tom Burgess relieved Mr. Jones to start the 2nd half and threw touchdown passes to Mr. Thompson and Ray Elgaard, and handed off to Mike Saunders for 2 touchdowns, while defensive end Bobby Jurasin returned an interception 35 yards for another Saskatchewan TD. The Blue Bombers scored touchdowns on a pass from Keithen McCant to Jamie Holland in the 3rd quarter and a 3-yard rush by Blaise Bryant in the last minute of the game.
