. German-born U.S. brewer. Mr. Busch and his father-in-law Eberhard Anheuser founded the Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis. Mr. Busch died on October 10, 1913 at the age of 74.

Jimmy McHugh
. U.S. songwriter. Mr. McHugh, with various partners, wrote the music for more than 500 songs from the 1920s through the 1950s. His songs included I Can't Give You Anything but Love; I'm in the Mood for Love; and On the Sunny Side of the Street. Mr. McHugh died on May 23, 1969 at the age of 74, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

British troops in France moving south of Caen captured Eterville and Maltot. French troops in Italy drove to within 20 miles of Florence. Chinese troops in the province of Yunan fought their way to the walls of Tenguyueh, the Japanese base blocking the Chinese from Allied forces in Burma. J. Carlton Ward, Jr., president of Fairchild Engine & Aircraft Company, told the United States Senate Military Affairs Committee that Germany planned to invade the U.S. in 1940 through Newfoundland and Mexico after bombing the United Kingdom out of the war.

Politics and government
U.S. Senator Guy Gillette (Democrat--Iowa) said that he was withdrawing as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention because he could not support Franklin D. Roosevelt's bid for a fourth term as President of the United States in the November 1944 election.

In response to bills introduced two days earlier in both houses of the United States Congress to suspend all military and economic aid to Turkey, Turkish Foreign Minister Turan Gunes said that even if aid were cut off, Turkey would not change the status of U.S. military bases maintained in Turkey under the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. He warned, however, that cutting off U.S. aid to Turkey might cause an "unstoppable wave" of adverse opinion among Turkish politicians and the public. The U.S. was objecting to the July 1 announcement by the Turkish government to once again permit the cultivation and sale of opium poppies.

Scandal
A grand jury in Jacksonville, Florida indicted U.S. Senator Edward Gurney (Republican--Florida) and six other men on charges of running an influence peddling and extortion racket for the past 3 1/2 years. According to the indictment, Sen. Gurney offered to exert pressure on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to secure housing contracts and mortgage insurance for Florida contractors and real estate developers in exchange for Sen. Gurney receiving at least $223,000 for use as "personal, political, and travel expenses" and operations of his Washington and Florida offices since 1970. 39 real estate developers were named as unindicted co-conspirators. Sen. Gurney maintained that he was absolutely innocent of the charges.

Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets combined for a record 6 consecutive strikeouts to help the NL defeat the AL before 57,756 fans. In the 4th inning, Mr. Valenzuela struck out Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, and George Brett. In the 5th, Mr. Gooden struck out Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon, and Alvin Davis. The 19-year-old Mr. Gooden was the youngest player ever to appear in an All-Star game.

Mel Blanc, 81
. U.S. actor. Mr. Blanc provided the voice for countless cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Woody Woodpecker, and Barney Rubble. He played Jack Benny’s music teacher on Mr. Benny’s radio and television programs for many years. Mr. Blanc also had his own radio show for one season in the 1940s.

Diplomacy
U.S. President George Bush met with the leader of Poland’s Communist regime, Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, and then addressed the Polish parliament. Noting the tide of democratic reform in Poland, Mr. Bush said, "A profound cycle of turmoil and great change is sweeping the world..." He announced a plan for U.S. economic aid for Poland that included $100 million for investment in Polish business (subject to approval by Congress); support for the rescheduling of Poland’s foreign debt; support for World Bank loans to assist industry and agriculture; and $15 million to clean up industrial pollution (also subject to Congressional approval).
