Marie Antoinette, 37. Queen consort of France and Navarre, 1774-1792. Marie Antoinette was born an Archduchess of Austria, and married the future King Louis XVI in 1770, when she was 14. She became Queen consort when Louis XVI acceded to the throne in 1774. Queen Marie Antoinette eventually became unpopular, and she and King Louis were imprisoned after the monarchy was abolished in 1792. She was convicted of high treason after a two-day trial, and executed by guillotine, nine months after the execution of her husband, and 17 days before her 38th birthday.

The Battle of Wattignies in France ended in a French victory over Austrian and Dutch forces.

Tim Keefe pitched a 3-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Silver King, who also gave up just 3 hits, before 4,876 fans at the Polo Grounds The Giants scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Browns replied with a run in the top of the 3rd, and the Giants scored the winning run in the bottom of the 3rd. The American Association champion Browns made 5 errors, while the National League champion Giants made 4.

German security and police forces captured 1,259 people--363 men, 689 women, and 207 children--in a raid on the Ghetto of Rome. Gentile prisoners were later freed, while the 1,023 Jews were deported to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland.

Defense
The Remington Arms Company announced that it was manufacturing a new type of incendiary ammunition that pierced the self-sealing tanks of airplanes.

The Young Communist League of the United States was dissolved at a meeting in New York. The 400 delegates formed a new organization called Youth for Democracy, which would take in non-Communist youth.

Politics and government
William Hawrelak, who had been mayor of Edmonton from 1951-1959 before being forced out of office in a scandal, was re-elected, defeating Stan Milner 52,340 (54%)-44,950 (46%). Successful aldermanic candidates were McKim Ross, Les Bodie, Gordon McClary, Ivor Dent, Ed Leger, and Julia Kiniski. For Mrs. Kiniski, it was her eleventh attempt at office, and the first time she'd been elected. Unsuccessful candidates for city council included Norbert Berkowitz, Alan Welsh, and Ken McAuley. Among the issues on the ballot was a proposal for a downtown arena to be built between Jasper and 102 Avenues and 97-99 Sts. Voters were asked to approve both the site and the building. The vote on the site was 33,470-25,300 in favour, and the vote on the building was 30,903-25,457 in favour, but both totals were less than the 2/3 required for approval, and the proposal was defeated.

Gene Krupa, 64. U.S. musician. Mr. Krupa was a jazz drummer who performed with various bands and led his own band in a career spanning more than 40 years. He became famous in the 1930s while with Benny Goodman's band; his solo on Sing, Sing, Sing (1937) influenced the use of the drummer as a soloist. Mr. Krupa also pioneered the definition of the standard drum set. He had a couple of well-publicized convictions for marijuana possession in the 1940s--one of which resulted in exoneration after it was proved that he had been framed--and died after a long illness.

Politics and government
Maynard Jackson, a 35-year-old attorney, captured 59% of the vote to defeat incumbent Sam Massell and become the first Negro mayor of Atlanta, Georgia.

Bert Campaneris singled home Ted Kubiak with 2 out in the top of the 11th to provide the winning margin before 54,817 fans at Shea Stadium. With 1 out, Mr. Kubiak drew a base on balls from New York relief pitcher Harry Parker, and advanced to second base on a passed ball by catcher Jerry Grote as Angel Mangual struck out for the second out. Mr. Campaneris then singled him home and was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play. Wayne Garrett singled to lead off the bottom of the 11th and advanced to second on a sacrifice, but Oakland relief pitcher Rollie Fingers retired Rusty Staub and Cleon Jones to end the game. The Mets opened the scoring in the 1st inning against Oakland starting pitcher Catfish Hunter when Mr. Garrett led off with a home run and Felix Millan singled and scored on a wild pitch. The Athletics scored a run in the 6th against New York ace Tom Seaver when Sal bando doubled with 1 our and scored on a 2-out double by Gene Tenace. They tied the game in the 8th when Mr. Campaneris led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Joe Rudi. With 2 out and Bud Harrelson on first base in the bottom of the 10th, Willie Mays came to bat as a pinch hitter and grounded into a force play to end the inning. It was the last appearance in Mr. Mays' 22-year major league career. Paul Lindblad pitched 2 innings of relief and was the winning pitcher. Mr. Fingers, who relieved Mr. Lindblad after Mr. Garrett's single, earned the save. Mr. Hunter yielded 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 6 innings, while Mr. Seaver gave up 7 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 innings.

George Liberace, 72. U.S. musician. Mr. Liberace, the elder brother of pianist Lee Liberace, served on his brother's television program in the 1950s as violin accompanist and orchestral arranger; the partnership ended after the commercial and critical failure of the movie Sincerely Yours (1955). George Liberace was a restaurateur, music publisher, and television station manager in later years, and died of leukemia.

The Rough Riders scored 3 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter to take a 27-1 halftime lead as they beat the Blue Bombers before 25,642 fans at Lansdowne Park. Rookie Mariet Ford scored the first touchdown when Dave Newman faked as if to field a punt, only to have Mr. Ford take the ball at his own 9-yard line and return it 101 yards for the score. Ottawa quarterback J.C. Watts rushed 1 yard for a TD and handed off to Skip Walker for an 8-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds remaining in the 1st half. Mr. Watts rushed 5 yards for a touchdown and threw a 21-yard TD pass to Pat Stoqua in the 3rd quarter. John Hufnagel started at quarterback for Winnipeg and completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Boyd in the 3rd quarter. Backup QB Norman Gibbs rushed 1 yard for a Winnipeg touchdown in the 4th quarter and passed to Willard Reaves for a 2-point convert, and handed off to Mr. Reaves for a 4-yard TD with 1:30 remaining in the game. Mr. Watts completed 12 of 23 passes for 295 yards, while Messrs. Hufnagel and Gibbs completed 22 of 40 passes for 334 yards. Mr. Walker rushed 16 times for 78 yards, while Mr. Reaves rushed 10 times for 41 yards. Ottawa fullback Jim Reid gained 100 yards on just 2 pass receptions; Joe Poplawski led Winnipeg receivers with 4 receptions for 91 yards.

The Calgary defense made 3 interceptions, recovered 2 B.C. fumbles, and held the Lions without an offensive touchdown as the Stampeders won before 24,013 fans at McMahon Stadium. Calgary safety Darrell Moir made the game's first interception, returning the ball 54 yards to set up an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mike Levenseller 4:40 into the game. B.C. defensive back Melvin Byrd scored the Lions' only touchdown later in the quarter on a 106-yard interception return. Calgary cornerback Ray Odums put the game away with a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown with 54 seconds remaining in the game. J.T. Hay converted both Calgary touchdowns and added 2 field goals and a single, while Mike McTague punted for wind-aided singles of 70 and 78 yards, and the Stampeders added a safety touch. Lui Passaglia kicked 3 field goals and a convert for B.C.

Scott McGregor pitched a 5-hitter for the shutout, while Eddie Murray hit 2 home runs and batted in 3 runs, and Rick Dempsey homered, doubled, and scored 2 runs before 67,064 fans at Veterans Stadium in the last World Series game to be played in the afternoon. The Orioles scored all their runs from the 2nd through the 5th innings. Charlie Hudson, who was removed after yielding Mr. Dempsey's double to lead off the top of the 5th, gave up 4 hits and 5 runs--all earned--in absorbing his second loss of the series. Mr. Dempsey was named the series' Most Valuable Player. The atttendance was the largest at a World Series game since 1964. Baltimore pitcher Jim Palmer achieved the distinction of being a member of all three Orioles' World Series championship teams: 1966, 1970, and 1983.

The Eskimos trailed the Stampeders 28-17 in the 4th quarter before 29,430 fans at McMahon Stadium when quarterback Damon Allen led them to 2 late touchdowns, scoring the winning TD on a 1-yard rush with 47 seconds remaining, as the Eskimos snapped a 2-game losing streak.

Roger Warren was charged with first-degree murder for the September 18, 1992, bomb blast at Giant Mine in Yellowknife that killed nine miners during a labour dispute.

Damon Allen threw touchdown passes of 71 yards to Eddie Brown in the 1st quarter and 102 yards to Henry "Gizmo" Williams in the 2nd quarter as the Eskimos beat the Rough Riders before 25,140 fans at Commonwealth Stadium on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in one of the dullest games this blogger has ever attended. The 2 touchdowns were the only exciting plays of the game; Mr. Williams' TD was the longest completed pass in Eskimo history to that time. Ottawa averted a shutout in the 2nd quarter when Greg Duncan, playing his only CFL game, scored a single on a missed field goal attempt.

Philadelphia Phillies 5 @ Toronto Blue Jays 8 (Toronto led best-of-seven series 1-0)

With the Phillies leading 4-3, Toronto center fielder Devon White hit a solo home run to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th. First baseman John Olerud hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead, and the Blue Jays added 3 insurance runs in the 7th before 52,011 fans at SkyDome. Juan Guzman started on the mound for Toronto and gave up 5 hits and 4 runs in 4 innings. Al Leiter relieved him and pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win, with Duane Ward pitching 1 1/3 innings for the save. Philadelphia starter Curt Schilling was charged with the loss, giving up 8 hits and 7 runs--6 earned--in 6 1/3 innings.

Stu Hart, 88. Canadian wrestler and wrestling promoter. Mr. Hart, a native of Saskatoon, was a successful amateur wrestler before playing as a lineman with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Western Interprovincial Football Union in 1938 and 1939. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II, he embarked on a successful career as a professional wrestler. Mr. Hart settled in Calgary, where he established Stampede Wrestling, telecasts of which were syndicated around the world. Mr. Hart and his wife Helen had 12 children; the sons, including Bret and Owen, became wrestlers, and the daughters all married wrestlers. The "dungeon," the basement of the family home in Calgary, was a training ground for many professional wrestlers.

Lieutenant-Colonel Yang Liwei returned to Earth after completing 21 orbits in 14 hours in his craft Shenzhou 5, becoming the first Chinese taikonaut.

Diplomacy
The United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a U.S. and U.K.-backed resolution endorsing a U.S.-led multinational force in Iraq under UN authority. The resolution also called on Iraq's Governing Council to present by December 15 a timetable for drafting a constitution and holding elections. Russia, France, and Germany indicated dissatisfaction that the resolution did not accelerate the pace for a transfer of power or provide a stronger UN role, and said they would not commit troops or new funds.

Aaron Boone hit Tim Wakefield's first pitch of the 11th inning for a home run as the Yankees came back from a 4-0 deficit before 56,279 fans at Yankee Stadium. Trot Nixon hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 2nd to open the scoring, and the Red Sox scored an unearned run later in the inning. Kevin Millar led off the 4th with a home run to make it 4-0, and after the next two batters reached base, Mike Mussina replaced starter Roger Clemens on the mound for New York. Jason Giambi led off the bottom of the 5th with a home run off Boston starting pitcher Pedro Martinez to make it 4-1 and the Yankees scored another run in the 7th before David Ortiz homered with 1 out in the 8th to give the Red Sox a 5-2 lead. Mr. Martinez appeared to be tiring, but Boston manager Grady Little left him in the game, and the move backfired, as the Yankees rallied for 3 straight hits off the Boston ace with 1 out in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game. Mariano Rivera pitched the last 3 innings for the Yankees to get the win. Mr. Ortiz doubled with 2 out in the 10th, but Mr. Millar popped out to shortstop Derek Jeter to end the threat.
