. U.S. musician. Lemon Henry Jefferson was one of the most popular blues singers of the 1920s, and has been called the "Father of the Texas Blues." He died at the age of 36 on December 19, 1929 at the age of 36, apparently of a heart attack, although various accounts of the circumstances exist.

. German actor. Mr. Bonn began his career on stage in 1885, and in 1905 founded Ferdinand Bonn's Berlin Theater, which collapsed after just two years. He frequently played detectives, including Sherlock Holmes in several plays. Mr. Bonn appeared in 80 films from 1912-1932.

The New York Times quoted Archbishop of York Cyril Garbett as stating that "he was convinced that there was the fullest freedom of worship in the Soviet Union," and that anti-religious propaganda had been discontinued. Most Rev. Garbett had gone to the U.S.S.R. at the invitation of the Moscow Patriarchate and was greeted by the newly installed Moscow Patriarch Sergiy. Archbishop Garbett was used by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin to spread lies about religious freedom in the U.S.S.R.

Economics and finance
U.S. War Production Board Director Donald Nelson said that U.S. war production in 1943 would be 1 1/2 times the combined output of Germany and Japan and "probably twice as great" in 1944.

Banking Encyclopedia reported that bank deposits on June 30 totalled $108,444,940,000--an increase of $24 billion in one year.

The Indian food minister announced in Calcutta that 1,292 people had died of starvation in Bengal during the week ending September 11.

Jose Rucci
. Argentinian labour leader. Mr. Rucci, a protege of Juan Peron, was assassinated by urban guerrillas less than 24 hours after Mr. Peron had been re-elected President of Argentina after being out of power for 18 years, and less than 24 hours after the government had outlawed the People's Revolutionary Army. An anonymous telephone caller identified himself as a member of a PRA commando unit and said that Mr. Rucci had been executed.

World events
Guinea-Bissau declared its independence from Portugal.

Diplomacy
Canada officially recognized the new military government in Chile, which had deposed President Salvador Allende in a coup on September 11.

Scandal
The United States Senate Select Committee on Campaign Activities, which was investigating the June 1972 break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., resumed hearings after a break of nearly two weeks. Convicted Watergate conspirator E. Howard Hunt testified that former special White House counsel Charles Colson had been aware in early 1972 of a "large-scale" intelligence scheme that led to the Watergate break-in, but Mr. Hunt said he had no information that Mr. Colson had specific foreknowledge of the break-in. He testified that Mr. Colson had enlisted him to work for the White House and that Mr. Colson was the man to whom he reported. Mr. Hunt also desribed hw, at Mr. Colson's behest, a fake diplomatic cable implicating the late President John F. Kennedy in the November 2, 1963 assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Niem had been fabricated.

Roy Bell rushed 21 times for 166 yards and a touchdown as the Eskimos held on to beat the Tiger-Cats before 27,978 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Mr. Bell's 5-yard TD run with 7:40 remaining in the game provided the winning margin, and Dave Cutler converted and added a 30-yard field goal with 42 seconds remaining. Hamilton quarterback Chuck Ealey marched the Tiger-Cats down the field in the final seconds, but Dave Fleming went out of bounds at the Edmonton 5-yard line just after catching the ball on the last play, and time had expired. George McGowan scored the other Edmonton touchdown on a 27-yard pass from Bruce Lemmerman in the 1st quarter, and Mr. Cutler converted and added a 57-yard field goal. The Tiger-Cats scored their touchdowns in the 3rd quarter on a 5-yard rush by Andy Hopkins and a 4-yard pass from Mr. Ealey to Garney Henley. Hamilton punter Alec Lockington conceded a safety touch at 3:35 of the 4th quarter which had an effect on the final score. Mr. Ealey led all Hamilton rushers with 118 yards on 9 carries, and completed 13 of 26 passes for 187 yards. Edmonton defensive back Bayne Norrie suffered a season-ending knee injury when clipped by a Hamilton receiver. It was the second and last CFL game for Edmonton defensive back John Saunders.

Mike Levenseller caught 6 passes for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Stampeders, while Willie Armstead and rookie Vic Wallace also caught TD passes from Mr. Quarles. Backup quarterback Gerry Dattilio threw a touchdown pass to Craig Ellis, and Ray Crouse rushed 1 yard for the other Calgary TD. Terry Greer caught 6 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown for the Argonauts, and Cedric Minter rushed 1 yard for the other Toronto TD.

Tom Clements, in his first game with Winnipeg since being traded from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for Dieter Brock three days earlier, relieved starting quarterback Nickie Hall in the 2nd quarter and completed 13 of 21 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown to Joe Poplawski, and Willard Reaves rushed 24 times for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Blue Bombers routed the Roughriders before 26,132 fans at Winnipeg Stadium. Sean Kehoe and Dan Huclack also rushed for Winnipeg touchdowns, Trevor Kennerd added 5 converts and 5 field goals. Saskatchewan starting quarterback John Hufnagel threw 2 touchdown passes to Ron Robinson, and backup QB Homer Jordan threw to Chirs DeFrance for the other Roughrider TD with 22 seconds remaining in the game. Ken Walter, recently acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Eskimos, played offensive tackle for the Blue Bombers. It was only his third regular season game in three years in the CFL, and his only game as a Blue Bomber.

Pascual Perez pitched a no-hitter as the Montreal Expos edged the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 before 14,088 fans at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia in a game that was called because of rain with runners on first and second bases and 1 out in the top of the 6th inning. Otis Nixon doubled to lead off the 4th inning, advanced to third base on a single by Dave Martinez, and scored when Andres Galarraga grounded into a force play.

Danny Jackson pitched a 4-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Rick Mahler, improving his 1988 record to 23-7, as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Atlanta Braves 2-1 before 21,098 fans at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays had his bid for a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians broken up with 2 outs in the 9th inning, giving up a bad-hop single to Julio Franco. Mr. Stieb settled for a 1-0, 1-hit victory before 8,157 fans at Cleveland Stadium. The Blue Jays scored the only run in the top of the 9th when Fred McGriff led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Rob Ducey.

Mark Langston pitched a 1-hitter for the Seattle Mariners as they shut out the Texas Rangers 3-0 before 13,219 fans at Arlington Stadium. Jeff Kunkel singled with 2 out in the 5th inning for the only Texas hit, when Seattle right fielder Jay Buhner lost the ball in the lights.

Shortstop Jody Reed made an error on a ground ball by Willie Randolph, allowing Claudell Washington to score the winning run as the New York Yankees scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 before 51,392 fans at Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox had scored a run in the top of the 9th to take a 3-2 lead.

Pinch runner Mark Davidson scored on a sacrifice fly by Jim Dwyer with 1 out in the top of the 9th inning to break a 2-2 tie as the Minnesota Twins edged the California Angels 3-2 before 25,290 fans at Anaheim Stadium. The Angels had runners on first and third bases with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th, but Mark McLemore flied out to right field to end the game.
