. Mr. Poulenc wrote music for solo piano as well as chamber music, opera, choral, and orchestral music. He was a pianist who was known for most of his career for light music, but wrote religious works in his later years. Mr. Poulenc died of a heart attack, 23 days after his 64th birthday.

Bobby Schmautz of the Vancouver Canucks scored with 6:01 remaining in the game to break a 4-4 tie and give the East Division All-Stars the win before 17,005 fans. Greg Polis of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored 2 goals and was awarded a car as the game's most valuable player. Rene Robert, Frank Mahovlich, Paul Henderson, and Jacques Lemaire scored the other goals for the East, while Pit Martin and Terry Harper scored the other Western goals. Gilles Villemure and Ed Giacomin of the New York Rangers split the goaltending for the East, while Tony Esposito of the Chicago Black Hawks and Rogie Vachon of the Los Angeles Kings shared the goaltending duties for the West.

Jim Harrison set a single-game record with 3 goals and 7 assists as the Oilers routed the Raiders before 2,846 fans at the Edmonton Gardens. Steve Carlyle scored 2 goals for the Oilers, with other goals coming from Val Fonteyne, Al Hamilton, Bob Wall, Bernie Blanchette, Rusty Patenaude, and Doug Barrie. Gene peacosh, Jamie Kennedy, and Mike Laughton scored for New York. The Oilers outshot the Raiders 52-20, including a 23-4 margin in the 3rd period, when they scored 6 goals. Ian Wilkie and Gary Kurt took turns in goal for the Raiders, while Jack Norris played the entire game in goal for the Oilers.

John Riggins rushed 38 times for 166 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown on a 4th-down-and-1-yard-to-go gamble in the 4th quarter, as the Redskins defeated the Dolphins before 103,667 fans to win the Super Bowl for the first time and their first NFL championship since 1942. Mr. Riggins' touchdown came with 10:10 remaining and Miami holding a 17-13 lead. Washington quarterback Joe Theismann completed touchdown passes to Alvin Garrett in the 2nd quarter and Charlie Brown in the 4th quarter, while Mark Moseley kicked 3 converts and 2 field goals to complete the Washington scoring. Miami quarterback David Woodley completed a 76-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Cefalo to open the scoring in the 1st quarter, and Fulton Walker returned a kickoff 98 yards for the Dolphins' other touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Uwe von Schamann converted both Miami touchdowns and added a field goal.
