Pep Leadley's field goal with less than 5 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter gave the Tricolor their win over the Argonauts before 16,367 fans on a snowy Saturday afternoon at Varsity Stadium. Toronto's star halfback Lionel Conacher fumbled a punt, and Mr. Leadley kicked a single to give Queen's an early 1-0 lead in the 1st quarter. The Argonauts took a 3-1 lead later in the quarter when Cap Fear intercepted a Queen's lateral and Mr. Conacher kicked a field goal. Mr. Leadley then rushed for 45 yards, setting up his own 30-yard field goal to give Queen's a 4-3 lead after 1 quarter. In the 2nd quarter, Mr. Conacher tried to make a running catch of a punt froma bad angle. He fumbled, and Mr. Thomas recovered for a touchdown, giving Queen's a 9-3 lead, which stood at halftime. Mr. Conacher punted for 2 singles, and then Mr. Dinsmore, the Toronto quarterback rushed 3 yards for a touchdown. Mr. Conacher converted to give the Argonauts an 11-9 lead after 3 quarters. The Argonauts were penalized 185 yards on the day to 30 for the Tricolor.

Don Crowe scored 2 touchdowns and Jake Gaudaur added another as the Hurricanes blanked Balmy Beach before 10,000 fans at Varsity Stadium. Eddie Thompson kicked a 37-yard field goal in the 1st quarter to give RCAF a 3-0 lead. Quarterback Bill Stukus completed a 10-yard pass to Mr. Crowe for the game's first touchdown in the 2nd quarter. Mr. Crowe kicked the convert to give the Hurricanes a 9-0 halftime lead. Mr. Gaudaur intercepted a pass by rookie Balmy Beach quarterback Joe Bailey and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. Mr. Thompson's convert gave the Hurricanes a 15-0 lead after 3 quarters. After a punt single by Fred Kijek and a safety touch conceded by Balmy Beach punter Sammy Sward, halfback Charlie Prince threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Mr. Crowe, who also converted to close the scoring in the 4th quarter.

The Alberta defense blocked a punt, forced two turnovers on downs, tackled running backs for losses 7 times, and limited the WLU offense to half its usual rushing yardage for a game as the Golden Bears won the Vanier Cup before 13,700 fans. Terry Cairns scored the first Alberta touchdown in the 2nd quarter on a 9-yard pass from quarterback Larry Tibble. Jack Schwartzberg, who had earlier kicked a 27-yard field goal, converted. The Golden Bears also scored a safety touch in the 1st half when WLU punter Ted Passmore fumbled a snap in his end zone and was unable to get the kick away. Late in the 3rd quarter the Golden Bears lined up for a field goal attempt, the snap was high, and holder Dale Schulha passed to Gary Weisbrot for a touchdown. Alberta defenders Roger Comartin and Andy McLeod shared the Ted Morris Memorial Trophy as the game’s Most Valuable Player. It was the second straight College Bowl appearance for Jim Donlevy in as many seasons as the team’s head coach, and his first win as a head coach. He had been an assistant coach to Clare Drake when the Golden Bears defeated McMaster to win their first Vanier Cup in 1967.

Italian anti-terrorist police arrested Sergei Ivanov Antonov, a Bulgarian airline employee in Rome, on charges of “active complicity” in the May 13, 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II. The actual shooting had been done by Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca. The warrant for Mr. Antonov’s arrest was issued by an Italian judge who had been conducting an investigation into a possible conspiracy, and established the possibility that Bulgaria’s Communist government might have been implicated.

Defense
The Soviet newspaper Pravda condemned U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s decision to deploy 100 MX missiles at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, saying that the MX would violate the U.S.-U.S.S.R. strategic arms limitation agreement.

Experts announced that the source of the encephalitis that had killed Joyce Kimmel of Kitchener, Ontario was probably West Nile virus, contracted through one of her numerous blood transfusions.
