The series ended with this game when American Association president Denny McKnight, who was upset by player raids and other actions by the National League, warned the AA champion Reds that they would be expelled from the league if they continued the series.

Lionel Conacher was one of the stars for the Argonauts in their win over the Winged Wheelers at Molson Stadium. Montreal quarterback Allan Arless, who had relieved Frank McGill in the 3rd quarter when the starter was ejected, suffered a broken neck on his first play and was taken to hospital; the injury proved fatal.

No overtime was played in the game between the Rough Riders and Tigers at Hamilton's Cricket Grounds. The game was played in a heavy rain.

New York second baseman Billy Martin made a diving catch of Jackie Robinson's popup with the bases loaded and 2 out in the bottom of the 7th inning to help preserve the Yankees' fourth straight World Series championship, tying the record set by the Yankees of 1936-1939. Ed Lopat pitched the first 3 innings for New York, and Allie Reynolds pitched the next 3 innings and was credited with the win. Bob Kuzava pitched the last 2 2/3 innings to earn the save. Brooklyn starter Joe Black pitched 5 1/3 innings as his record for the series dropped to 1-2. 33,195 were in attendance at Ebbets Field. Dodgers' first baseman Gil Hodges finished the series with no hits in 21 at bats.

Billy Pierce of the Giants and Bill Stafford of the Yankees each had a shutout going until Roger Maris of the Yankees drove in 2 runs in the 7th and scored the third Yankee run. Giants' catcher Ed Bailey hit a 2-run home run with 2 out in the 9th, but Mr. Stafford retired Vic Davalillo to end the game. 71,434 attended the game at Yankee Stadium.

Morris Stefaniw scored in the 1st period, and Rey Comeau and Bobby Leiter scored 65 seconds apart in the 3rd period as the Flames edged the Islanders before 12,221 fans at Nassau County Coliseum in Uniondale in the first regular season game for both expansion clubs. For Mr. Stefaniw, the goal was the only one he ever scored in the NHL. Ed Westfall scored for the Islanders in the 2nd period and Billy Harris in the 3rd period. Phil Myre won the goaltending duel over Gerry Desjardins.

Ken Dryden stopped all 33 shots and Marc Tardif, Frank Mahovlich, and Jacques Lemaire scored as the Canadiens blanked the North Stars in the season opener for both teams before 16,259 fans at the Montreal Forum.

Cliff Koroll and Dennis Hull scored in the 1st period and Jerry Korab scored in the 2nd period as the Black Hawks opened the season with a win over the Maple Leafs before 16,374 fans at Maple Leaf Gardens. Denis Dupere finally scored for Toronto in the 3rd period. Tony Esposito won the goaltending duel over Jacques Plante.

Don Tannahill, John Wright, and Bobby Lalonde scored for the Canucks as they opened the season under new coach Vic Stasiuk with a win over the Golden Seals before a capacity crowd of 15,570 at Pacific Coliseum. Rick Smith and Reg Leach scored for California. Dunc Wilson won the goaltending duel over Gilles Meloche.

The Tiger-Cats, behind the quarterbacking of Chuck Ealey, rolled up a 28-0 halftime lead, gave up 24 straight points in the 3rd quarter, and then scored 22 in the 4th quarter to defeat the Stampeders before 27,647 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Mr. Ealey completed 15 of 25 passes for 208 yards and touchdowns to Tommy-Joe Coffey, Dave Fleming, and Bob Richardson. Mr. Fleming also rushed 1 yard for a touchdown; Garney Henley rushed 50 yards for a touchdown and caught a 1-yard pass from backup quarterback Bill Van Burkleo for another; and defensive back Lewis Porter returned a fumble 11 yards for the other Hamilton touchdown. Jerry Keeling passed 10 yards to Gerry Shaw for the first Calgary touchdown; Jesse Mims rushed 52 yards for the second Stampeder touchdown and 1 yard for the third. The Stampeders gave up 4 interceptions and lost 3 fumbles; Al Brenner made 2 of the interceptions, raising his total for the season to 9. Calgary guard Granville Liggins and Hamilton defensive lineman Peter Kudryk kept up a running battle throughout the game, and Mr. Liggins accused Mr. Kudryk of calling him a nigger; Mr. Kudryk hotly denied the allegation.

Detroit 2 @ Oakland 3 (11 innings) (Oakland led best-of-five series 1-0)

Joe Morgan hit a home run with 1 out in the top of the 1st inning to give the Reds an early lead, but the Pirates came back with 3 in the bottom of the inning, as Al Oliver tripled home a run and then scored. Steve Blass pitched 8 1/3 innings to get the win before an appreciative crowd of 50,476 at Three Rivers Stadium. Don Gullett pitched 6 innings and took the loss.

Al Kaline hit a home run in the top of the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, but made a throwing error with 1 out in the bottom of the inning that allowed Gene Tenace to score the winning run after a single by Gonzalo Marquez. Catfish Hunter pitched 8 innings for the Athletics and was briefly relieved by Vida Blue before Rollie Fingers pitched 3 innings to get the win. Mickey Lolich pitched 10 innings and took the loss after allowing the first 2 batters in the 11th to reach base. Chuck Seelbach relieved Mr. Lolich and gave up the single to Mr. Marquez that resulted in the winning run. Only 29,536 were in attendance at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

. U.S. football player. Mr. Walston was an end and kicker with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1951-1962, scoring 881 points. His best season was 1954, when he set a team record with 114 points on 11 touchdowns, 4 field goals, and 36 points after touchdowns. Mr. Walston was a member of the team that won the 1960 NFL championship, and was named to play in the Pro Bowl in 1961 and 1962.

Abimael Guzman Reynoso, leader of the Maoist guerrilla movement in Peru known as Shining Path, was sentenced by a military tribunal to life in prison without possibility of parole after being convicted of treason. Mr. Guzman had been captured in September. The judge, who wore a hood to protect his identity, stated that Mr. Guzman had been responsible for 20,000 deaths and $20 billion in damages that had occurred during Shining Path’s 12-year war against Peruvian authorities.
