Born on this date
Roberto Bellarmino. Italian clergyman. Cardinal Bellarmino, anglicized as Robert Bellarmine, joined the Jesuit order in 1560, and was a professor of theology before becoming a Cardinal Inquisitor in 1599 and Archbishop of Capua in 1602. He was one of the judges in the trial of Giordano Bruno, and concurred in the decision to order Mr. Bruno burned at the stake as a heretic. Cardinal Bellarmino notified Galileo Galilei in 1616 of a forthcoming decree of the Congregation of the Index condemning the Copernican doctrine of the mobility of the Earth and the immobility of the Sun, and ordered him to abandon it. He died on September 17, 1621, 17 days before his 79th birthday. Cardinal Bellarmino was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930, and was made a Doctor of the Church in 1931.

Hank Borowy, Atley Donald, and Ernie Bonham each pitched 3 innings for the Yankees, and Mr. Donald took the loss. Mort Cooper started for St. Louis and pitched 5 1/3 innings before the Yankees rallied to knock him out of the box.

Peter Bridge, 36, a reporter for the defunct Newark Evening News, was sentenced to prison for an indefinite period on contempt of court charges for refusing to reveal to an Essex County grand jury his information sources for stories on official corruption in New Jersey. Mr. Bridge became the first reporter to be imprisoned since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling four months earlier that denied that reporters had a constitutional right to protect confidential information and sources. He joined members of press organizations in urging the U.S. Congress to give journalists legal protection in protecting the confidentiality of their sources.

Glenn Gould, 50. Canadian pianist. One of the most famous pianists of the 20th century, Mr. Gould was known for playing the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He died of a stroke in his native Toronto nine days after his 50th birthday.

Swedish military officials announced that antisubmarine helicopters and ships had been searching since October 1 for a suspected foreign submarine. A Swedish submarine crew had spotted the foreign submarine 300 yards from a naval base on Musko Island, 20 miles south of Stockholm.

When Hamilton’s Paul Bennett fumbled a punt in the 2nd quarter, Mr. Jefferson returned it 28 yards for his first touchdown. Later in the quarter, Winnipeg’s Roy Bennett intercepted a pass, returned it 19 yards and lateralled to Mr. Jefferson, who returned it 26 yards for his second touchdown. In the 4th quarter, Greg Battle returned an interception 25 yards and lateralled to Mr. Jefferson, who went the remaining 47 yards for his third TD. With 38 seconds remaining in the game, Mr. Jefferson returned a punt 58 yards for his fourth touchdown. Willard Reaves of the Blue Bombers rushed for 104 yards on 24 carries and 2 touchdowns. Johnnie Jones, who rushed 19 times for 91 yards, ran 1 yard for the only Hamilton touchdown with 4:33 remaining in the game. Hamilton quarterbacks Tom Porras and Mike Kerrigan combined to complete just 11 of 37 passes for 107 yards and 4 interceptions.

Larry Herndon's solo home run in the 2nd inning was all the scoring as the Detroit Tigers edged the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 to clinch the American League East Division pennant. The Tigers had trailed the Blue Jays by 3½ games eight days earlier, but the Blue Jays lost their last 7 games, 4 of them to the Tigers. Frank Tanana (15-10) pitched a 6-hitter to win the pitchers' duel over Jimmy Key (17-8) before 51,005 fans at Tiger Stadium.



Roger Clemens (20-9) of the Boston Red Sox pitched a 2-hitter and struck out 12 in a 4-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers before 25,454 fans at Fenway Park in Boston.

Ron Hassey and Carlton Fisk hit home runs to help the Chicago White Sox defeat the Oakland Athletics 5-2 before 15,083 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Oakland designated hitter Reggie Jackson doubled in a run in the 1st inning, drew a base on balls in the 4th, flied out in the 6th, and singled in the 8th to finish 2 for 3 in the 2,820th and last game of his 21-year Hall of Fame major league career.

The New York Mets scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th inning to break a 6-6 tie and defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-6 before 41,890 fans at Busch Memorial Stadium in St. Louis.
