The Minnesota Twins and Washington Senators split a doubleheader; the Twins won the opener 9-7 in 11 innings, and the Senators won the second game 3-0. John Kennedy made his major league debut for the Senators in the first game, coming to bat as a pinch hitter and hitting a home run to break up a bid for a no-hitter by Dick Stigman. Claude Osteen pitched a 3-hitter for the Senators in the second game.

Terrorism
Eight members of Black September invaded the Israeli dormitory at the Olympic village in Munich and killed two members of the Israeli Olympic team. The terrorists took nine other Israeli Olympians hostage and threatened to kill them unless Israel released 200 Arab guerrillas from Israeli prisons. 23 hours after Black September terrorists had invaded the Israeli dormitory at the Olympic village in Munich and killed two members of Israel’s Olympic team while taking nine more hostage, the terrorists and their hostages were flown in three helicopters to nearby Furstenfeldbruck airport, where, shortly before midnight, a shootout occurred, resulting in the deaths of five of the terrorists, a German policeman, and all of the hostages.

Douglas Bader, 72
. U.K. military aviator. Group Captain Bader joined the Royal Air Force in 1928 and lost both legs in a crash in 1931. He was able to resume his career as a pilot, and became a fighter ace in World War II. Group Captain Bader's biography, Reach for the Sky, was published in 1954 and made into a movie in 1956. An apartment building in Edmonton, Alberta that was designed to be accessible to people with disabilities was named in his honour. Group Captain Bader died of a heart attack.

World events
Israel allocated $18.5 million to build three new settlements in the occupied West Bank and approved the building of seven others. The 10 settlements would bring the number of such towns in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to 109.

Dieter Brock rushed 2 yards for his second touchdown of the game with 2:22 remaining in the game to give the Blue Bombers their win over the Roughriders before 30,621 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Mr. Brock also completed touchdown passes to Mike Holmes and Rick House. Mike Washington and Joe Adams rushed for Saskatchewan touchdowns, and John Hufnagel connected with Dwight Edwards for a 57-yard touchdown. Winnipeg’s William Miller rushed 24 times for 143 yards, including a 54-yard run in the 2nd quarter that set up Mr. Brock’s first touchdown.

. U.S. television producer. Mr. Martin was executive producer of such series as The Untouchables (1959-1960); 12 O'Clock High (1964-1967); The Fugitive (1963-1967); The Invaders (1967-1968); The F.B.I. (1965-1974); Dan August (1970-1971); Cannon (1971-1976); The Streets of San Francisco (1972-1977); Barnaby Jones (1973-1978); and Tales of the Unexpected (1977). At one time in the early 1970s, Quinn Martin Productions was responsible for more hours of prime-time television programming in the United States than any other company.

Billy Herman, 83
. U.S. baseball player and manager. Mr. Herman was a second baseman with the Chicago Cubs (1931-1941); Brooklyn Dodgers (1941-1943, 1946); Boston Braves (1946); and Pittsburgh Pirates (1947). In 1,922 games he batted .304 with 47 home runs and 839 runs batted in. Mr. Herman's best season was probably 1935, when he batted .341 and led the National League with 227 hits and 57 doubles and helped the Cubs win the pennant. He managed the Pirates in 1947 and the Boston Red Sox for 2 games in 1964 and full-time in 1965 and 1966, posting a record of 189 wins and 274 losses. Mr. Herman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.
