Battling Siki (50-9-3) knocked out defending champion Georges Carpentier (84-13-5) in the 6th round at Stade Buffalo in Montrouge, France to win the world light heavyweight title and the European light heavyweight and heavyweight titles. Referee Henri Bernstein initially disqualified Mr. Siki for tripping, but was overruled by the President of the French Federation of Boxing (FFB) and ringside judges, who declared Mr. Siki the victor. On November 9, 1922, the FFB revoked Mr. Siki's license and declared the French Light heavyweight title vacant.

Samuel Barber's concerto for piano and orchestra received its premiere performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf, at Philharmonic Hall in New York. John Browning was the piano soloist. The concerto went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1963.

Ed Buchanan scored 2 rushing touchdowns and Eagle Day completed touchdown passes to Pete Manning and Jim Dillard--all in the 2nd quarter--as the Stampeders beat the Tiger-Cats before 22,109 fans at Civic Stadium. Mr. Buchanan's first TD covered 10 yards; his second began as a rush from the Calgary 11-yard line by Lovell Coleman, who ran 7 yards and lateralled to Mr. Buchanan, who went the remaining 92 yards for the score. The touchdowns by Messrs. Manning and Dillard covered 12 and 42 yards, respectively. Mr. Coleman rushed 5 yards for a TD in the 3rd quarter, set up by his own 58-yard run. The Stampeders finished with 385 yards rushing; Mr. Buchanan carried 13 times for 196 yards, and Mr. Coleman carried 19 times for 162. Frank Cosentino started at quarterback for the Tiger-Cats and rushed 10 yards for a touchdown to give Hamilton an early 6-0 lead. Joe Zuger relieved him in the 4th quarter and threw touchdown passes to Tommy Grant and Dave Viti.

Mike Lashuk, Bill McKenny, E.A. Sims, and Johnny Bright scored touchdowns for the Eskimos before 24,117 fans at CNE Stadium. Mr. Lashuk's 3-yard TD run was set up by an alert play by quarterback Don Getty. Mr. Getty was holding the ball for a field goal attempt by Ted Tully, but the kick was blocked by Jim Andreotti, and the ball bounced into Mr. Getty's hands. He then completed a pass to Mr. Sims for a first down. Mr. McKenny's touchdown covered 63 yards on a pass from Mr. Getty, and gave the Eskimos a 13-0 lead. Gerry McDougall rushed 4 yards for Toronto's first TD in the 2nd quarter, but Mr. Sims returned a fumbled punt 40 yards for an Edmonton touchdown a few minutes later. Dick Shatto rushed 2 yards for a touchdown, but Mr. Bright responded with a 2-yard TD run of hiw own. Tobin Rote then completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Mr. Shatto, reducing the Edmonton lead to 27-21 at halftime. The 2nd half was considerably duller. Mr. Bright’s touchdown was the 71st and last of his career; he finished the game with 74 yards on 20 rushes. Mr. Sims’ touchdown was the first of his CFL career. Toronto's Dave Mann led all receives with 99 yards on 5 receptions.

Willie Fleming, Nub Beamer, and Tom Larscheid scored touchdowns for the Lions as they ended the Blue Bombers' 7-game winning streak and handed the defending Grey Cup champions their first loss on the road since October 1959. It was the first CFL game for rookie B.C. linebacker Greg Findlay. Attendance at Empire Stadium in Vancouver was 20,143.

At least 22 were killed and 26 injured when a privately-owned rebuilt Korean War Sabre jet faltered on takeoff from a Sacramento airport and slammed into an ice cream parlour crowded with children and their parents.

All the scoring took place in the 2nd period as Team Canada narrowed the Soviets' lead in the series. Yuri Liapkin and Aleksandr Yakushev of the U.S.S.R. scored the first and last goals, and Dennis Hull, Yvan Cournoyer, and Paul Henderson scored consecutive goals for Canada. Canadian players and coaches expressed frustration with West German referees Franz Baeder and Joseph Kompalla, with the general opinion being that it was the worst officiating any of them had ever seen. Ken Dryden won the goaltending duel over Vladislav Tretiak.

Chuck Ealey threw 2 touchdown passes to Tommy-Joe Coffey and 1 each to Dave Buchanan and Tony Gabriel to lead the Tiger-Cats over the Argonauts before 34,410 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Hamilton defensive back John Williams made 2 interceptions, the first of which he returned for a touchdown. Bill Symons rushed 2 yards for an Argonaut touchdown and Dave Cranmer scored the other on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Jim Chasey.

Don Jonas threw touchdown passes of 97 and 27 yards to Jim Thorpe as the Blue Bombers edged the Roughriders on a snowy Sunday afternoon at Taylor Field in Regina. George Reed rushed for a Saskatchewan touchdown and Ron Lancaster completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Alan Ford, but Mr. Lancaster left the game at halftime with injured ribs, and was replaced by Bubba Wyche, who was ineffective. Saskatchewan defensive tackle Ed McQuarters suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Roughriders had a chance to win the game on the last play, but Jack Abendschan was short on a 45-yard field goal attempt.

Jerry Keeling completed 2 touchdown passes to Gerry Shaw and another to Jesse Mims, and rushed for a touchdown of his own as the defending Grey Cup champion Stampeders beat the Alouettes before a capacity crowd of 23,616 at McMahon Stadium. Montreal quarterback Sonny Wade threw a touchdown pass to Peter Dalla Riva but tied a CFL record for a single game by giving up 7 interceptions. Running back Ike Brown scored the other Montreal touchdown.

NFL
Joe Namath had the most productive game of his professional career, passing for 496 yard and 6 touchdowns as the New York Jets (2-0) beat the Baltimore Colts (0-2) 44-34 before 56,626 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Baltimore quarterback Johnny Unitas, in one of his last big games, threw for 376 yards and 2 touchdowns.

. U.K. actress. A daughter of Sir Winston Churchill, Sarah appeared in a number of movies and television programs in the 1940s and 1950s. Her best-known role was in Royal Wedding (1951), where she co-starred with Fred Astaire.

Protest
500 opponents of Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos demonstrated in front of the U.S. embassy in Manila, charging that he had betrayed national interests to the economic and political objectives of the United States. Six platoons of riot police protected the embassy.

Ottawa quarterback Chris Isaac rushed 7 yards for a touchdown and passed 65 yards to Jim Reid for the game’s final major score with 1:36 remaining in the game. The only Saskatchewan touchdown came on a 15-yard pass from John Hufnagel to Ron Robinson early in the 2nd quarter. Mike Washington of Saskatchewan rushed 11 times for 103 yards. Joey Walters of the Roughriders caught 7 passes for 120 yards, while teammate Chris DeFrance caught 7 for 112.

. U.S. actress. Miss Astor was one of the most prominent leading ladies in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. She won the Academy Award for her supporting performance in The Great Lie (1941), but is probably best remembered for co-starring with Humphrey Bogart in The Maltese Falcon (1941).

Dave Winfield of the Toronto Blue Jays became the first 40-year-old in major league history to bat in 100 runs in a season when he hit a 2-run double off losing pitcher Ben McDonald in the Blue Jays' 8-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
