Born on this date
Julia Child. U.S. chef. Mrs. Child worked for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency) during World War II. She didn't take up cooking until after her marriage to OSS colleague Paul Child, and a move to Paris in 1948. Within three years, Mrs. Child was teaching cooking to American women. Her book Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961) was a bestseller, resulting in a television program, The French Chef, which ran nationally in the United States from 1963-1973. Mrs. Child died on August 13, 2004, two days before her 92nd birthday.

Bob Waterfield's field goal in the 4th quarter gave the defending National Football League champion Rams their win over the All-Stars before 88,316 fans on a rainy night. The All-Stars led for most of the game after Babe Parilli of Kentucky completed a touchdown pass to Vic Janowicz of Ohio State in the 1st half. The Rams tied the score in the 4th quarter on a touchdown pass from Norm Van Brocklin to Tank Younger, converted by Mr. Waterfield.

Space
Soviet cosmonauts Andrian Nikolayev and Pavel Popovich, aboard Vostok 3 and Vostok 4, respectively, returned to Earth. Vostok 3 had lifted off on August 11 and Vostok 4 the following day.

Society
Prohibition officially ended for blacks in South Africa on buying liquor other than maize or millet beer. Contrary to the expectations of many, there was no immediate outbreak of drunkenness or violence as a result.

Crime
Maple Leaf Gardens’ president Harold Ballard was convicted of 47 of 49 charges of fraud, theft, and tax evasion involving a total of $205,000. The charges mainly involved the use of Maple Leaf Gardens shareholders’ money to pay for personal luxuries. Mr. Ballard’s partner in crime, Stafford Smythe, had been the main target of investigators, but Mr. Smythe had died on October 13, 1971, shortly before he was scheduled to go to trial on similar charges.

Died on this date
Hugo Theorell, 79. Swedish biochemist. Dr. Theorell won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for 1955 for discovering the oxidation enzyme and its effects.

Ernie Bushmiller, 76. U.S. cartoonist. Mr. Bushmiller wrote and drew the comic strip Fritzi Ritz after creator Larry Whittington departed in 1925. In 1938 the strip was retitled Nancy. Mr. Bushmiller won the Reuben Award in 1976.

Movies
Some of the scenes for Running Brave (1983) were filmed at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton prior to the beginning of the football game between the Edmonton Eskimos and Montreal Concordes. The movie was a biography of American runner Billy Mills, who won the gold medal in the men’s 10,000-metre run at the summer Olympics in Tokyo in 1964. Commonwealth Stadium was used as a substitute set for the stadium in Tokyo for the re-creation of the racing scenes.

War
The Israeli cabinet accepted the U.S. plan for a multinational peacekeeping force in west Beirut.

Rebel guerrillas in El Salvador seized the town of Guarjila, killing nine soldiers in the process. Monsignor Arturo Rivera Damas, leader of the Salvadoran Roman Catholic Church, criticized government raids on the slums and demanded that the government treat its prisoners in a more humane manner.

Warren Moon completed 25 of 40 passes for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Eskimos past the Concordes before 56,374 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. Tom Scott led the Edmonton receivers with 8 receptions for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns; Mike Levenseller caught 7 for 115 and 1 touchdown, and Brian Fryer caught 6 for 90. Kevin Cole rushed 3 yards for the first Eskimo touchdown in the 2nd quarter, and backup quarterback Cliff Olander connected with Mark deBrueys for a 19-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter. The Concordes broke up the shutout with 5:32 remaining in the game on a 4-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Steve Alatorre, who had relieved starter Luc Tousignant, to Nick Arakgi and a 2-point convert pass from Mr. Tousignant to Howard Ballage. The Eskimos led 13-0 at halftime and put the game away in the 2nd half.

Died on this date
Martha Blackburn, 47. Canadian media magnate. Ms. Blackburn was chairman of the board of directors of The Blackburn Group, which published the London Free Press and owned CFPL radio and television stations in London. Ms. Blackburn took over the company upon her father Walter's death in 1983. She died of a heart attack after water skiing at her family's cottage on an island in Georgian Bay, Ontario.

Anthony Calvillo completed 12 of 18 passes for 296 yards and touchdowns of 88 yards to Pat Woodcock and 45 yards to Keith Stokes as the Alouettes beat the defending Grey Cup champion Stampeders before the usual sellout crowd of 20,002 at Molson Stadium. Lawrence Phillips rushed 2 yards for a Montreal touchdown in the 1st quarter, and Wayne Shaw returned an interception 39 yards for another Montreal touchdown in the 3rd quarter. Marcus Crandell completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Anderson for the first Calgary touchdown less than 3 minutes into the game, and Scott Regimbald rushed 13 yards for the other Calgary touchdown in the 3rd quarter.

Ricky Ray relieved Jason Maas at quarterback for the Eskimos in the 3rd quarter and directed them to 17 points in the 4th quarter as the Eskimos edged the Blue Bombers in an exciting game in front of 32,174 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. The Eskimos jumped to an 18-1 lead in the 2nd quarter on the strength of a 31-yard touchdown pass from Mr. Maas to Terry Vaughn and a 95-yard punt return touchdown by Winston October. Winnipeg quarterback Khari Jones completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Charles Roberts to make the halftime score 18-8. The Blue Bombers tied the game in the 3rd quarter on a Troy Westwood field goal and a 12-yard touchdown rush by Arland Bruce, converted by Mr. Westwood. Mr. Ray threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Ed Hervey to put the Eskimos ahead early in the 4th quarter, but the Blue Bombers struck back with 2 touchdowns in just over 3 minutes later in the quarter on a 35-yard pass from Mr. Jones to Jamie Stoddard and a 10-yard rush by Mr. Jones. Mr. Ray threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Mr. Vaughn with 2:04 remaining, set up when Elfrid Payton recovered a Winnipeg fumble. Mr. Payton recovered another Winnipeg fumble shortly after, and Sean Fleming kicked a 25-yard field goal with 30 seconds remaining in regulation time for the winning points.

Matt Kellett kicked 5 field goals and a convert as the Lions held on to defeat the Renegades before 15,258 fans at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. Willie Hurst scored the only B.C. touchdown on a 3-yard rush just 2:34 into the game. Ottawa quarterback Dan Crowley completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Darren Joseph in the 2nd quarter, while backup quarterback Oteman Sampson completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Aubrey Cummings on the last play of the game and then found Mark Nohra with a pass for a 2-point convert.
