Politics and government
The day after being shot four times and paralysed from the waist down while campaigning in Laurel, Maryland, Alabama Governor George Wallace won the Michigan and Maryland primaries for the 1972 Democratic Party nomination for President of the United States. In Michigan, Gov. Wallace captured 51% of the vote, followed by U.S. Senator George McGovern (South Dakota) (27%) and U.S. Sen. Hubert Humphrey (Minnesota) (16%). In Maryland, Gov. Wallace took 39% of the vote to 27% for Sen. Humphrey and 22% for Sen. McGovern. Gov. Wallace now had 323 delegates to the party’s nominating convention in July, behind Sen. McGovern (405 delegates), but ahead of Sen. Humphrey (207). Gov. Wallace was recovering from five hours of surgery as the primaries were taking place. In the Republican Party primaries, President Richard Nixon took 95% of the vote in Michigan and 86% in Maryland.

John Connally, the only Democratic Party member of U.S. President Richard Nixon’s cabinet, resigned as Secretary of the Treasury, having agreed to take the position for only one year. President Nixon named George Shultz, director of the Office of Management and Budget, to succeed Mr. Connally.
