Scandal
United States Senator Harrison Williams (Democrat—New Jersey), facing probable expulsion from the Senate, resigned his seat after 23 years in office. Mr. Williams had been convicted on nine counts of bribery and conspiracy in the Abscam investigation, where Federal Bureau of Investigation agents disguised themselves as Arab sheiks and offered bribes to various U.S. politicians. In his resignation speech, Sen. Williams maintained that he did not feel that he had violated any code of ethics.
