Thanom Kittikachorn
. Prime Minister of Thailand, 1958, 1963-1973. Supreme Commander Thanom had a military career spanning almost 45 years. He participated in a successful coup led by Colonel Sarit Thanarat in 1957, and became Defense Minister, serving as Prime Minister from January-October 1958. Supreme Commander Thanom was appointed Prime Minister the day after Field Marshal Sarit's death from liver failure in 1963, and governed as an anti-Communist dictator for almost 10 years, finally stepping down in October 1973 in the face of public protest. He went into exile in the United States and Singapore as democratic government returned to Thailand, but returned to Thailand in 1976 as a novice Buddhist monk. Mr. Thanom's return sparked mass protest, resulting in another military coup, but he claimed to be uninterested in returning to politics, and he kept his word, although he soon left the monkhood. Mr. Thanom died on June 16, 2004 at the age of 92.

Swimming

The government of Ecuador announced that Peruvian forces had attacked the border town of Zapotillo in the Ecuadorian province of Loja on August 9 and 10, in violation of their truce.

Diplomacy
U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and U.K. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, meeting aboard the U.S. cruiser Augusta at Argentia, Newfoundland, discussed war aims; they agreed on an eight-point freedom of the seas; self-determination; free trade; and postwar disarmament.

U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull said that the United States would discuss a restoration of amicable relations with Japan only if Japan adhered closely to international law.

Diplomatic sources in Ankara reported that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin had warned Iran that unless German agents in the country were expelled, the U.S.S.R. may send troops into Iran under the 1921 Soviet-Iranian treaty.

The Argentine Foreign Office received written promises from the German and British ambassadors to eliminate their propaganda in Argentina.

Defense
The Canadian government banned the use of silk in order to conserve wartime supplies for parachutes. U.S. President Roosevelt issued an executive order empowering the Federal Reserve Board to curb installment buying of consumer gooods made of needed defense materials.

A subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities offered the New York Labor Department evidence purporting to prove that Nancy Reed, dismissed on July 11 as an investigator for the department, had been a member of the Communist Party for years.

Scandal
Richard Whitney, former president of the New York Stock Exchange, was released on parole from Sing Sing Prison after serving 40 months of his 5-10 years sentence for grand larceny.

Economics and finance
The Japanese government applied four new imperial ordinances under the National Mobilization Act of 1938 to control minimum prices on the stock exchanges; regulate marine transport; appraise corporation-owned stocks; and fix prices for more than 7,000 articles.

CBS had developed a field-sequential colour system that could only be seen on special sets, and the signals could not be seen on regular black-and-white sets.

Stephen Early, 61
. U.S. journalist and bureaucrat. Mr. Early worked with Stars and Stripes, Associated Press, and Paramount News before serving as White House Press Secretary for Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945) and Harry Truman (1950). He was Deputy Secretary of Defense (1949-1950). Mr. Early died 16 days before his 62nd birthday, a week after suffering a heart attack.

U.S. and Communist truce negotiators at Kaesong sat in unbroken silence for 2¼ hours when the Communists refused to discuss anything but a cease-fire on the 38th Parallel.

World events
Argentina's Radical and Socialist Parties reported that police had arrested many of their leaders in a pre-election drive against alleged terrorism by President Juan Peron's political opponents.

Prime Minister Rene Pleven's new cabinet, the 15th of the post-World War II years, gained a vote of confidence in the French National Assembly despite Communist and Gaullist opposition.

Bob Kelly (3-1) pitched a 9-hit complete game victory over Vern Law (3-8), who hit his first major league home run in the 5th inning. Monty Basgall played the last 2 innings at second base for the Pirates, with no plate appearances and 2 putouts in the 200th and last game of his 3-year major league career. Clyde McCullough drove in both runs with an outfield fly in the 2nd inning and a solo home run in the 5th and Bob Friend (5-8) pitched a 5-hitter to outduel Bob Rush (7-7), who allowed 3 hits in 8 innings, as the Pirates won the second game 2-1.

Max Lanier (6-8) pitched a 2-hitter and batted 2 for 3, scoring the first run in a 2-run 5th inning, as the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 before 8,421 fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis. Losing pitcher Ken Ramsdell (9-12) allowed 7 hits in a complete game.

Warren Spahn (12-12) pitched a 6-hitter to outduel Jack Curtis (7-7), who also pitched a 6-hitter, to earn his 300th career major league win as the Milwaukee Braves edged the Chicago Cubs 2-1 before 40,775 fans at County Stadium in Milwaukee.

The New York Yankees scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning to take an 8-0 lead, and coasted to a 12-5 win over the Washington Senators before 22,601 fans at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Roger Maris hit his 42nd home run of the season for New York in the 5th, while Mickey Mantle hit his 44th in the 7th. New York shortstop Tony Kubek batted 4 for 6 with a triple, 3 runs, and a run batted in.

Luis Aparicio's home run with 2 out in the bottom of the 3rd inning was the only run as the Chicago White Sox edged the Kansas City Athletics 1-0 before 20,941 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Billy Pierce (7-7) pitched a 5-hitter to outduel Jim Archer (8-7), who allowed 6 hits in a game that was played in 1 hour 32 minutes.

The Eskimos opened the scoring with a single by Dave Cutler on a missed field goal, but the Stampeders dominated the game at Clarke Stadium after that. Former Stampeder quarterback Larry Lawrence, activated by the Eskimos before the game, entered in relief of Don Trull in the 2nd quarter, but the two generated only 94 yards in net offense. Several Eskimo careers ended with this game: Bob McCarthy; Keith Christensen (who went on the injured list for a month and was then released; Terry Swarn--the team's nominee for most outstanding player in 1970--and most notably, Jim Thomas, who had led the team in rushing in 7 of his first 8 seasons. He carried 5 times for 12 yards in this game and then spent the remainder of the season on the injured list, ending a spectacular 9-year career.

Charles Allard, 71
. Canadian broadcasting executive. Dr. Allard, a heart surgeon from Edmonton, founded the Allarco real estate and broadcasting empire. He founded the Edmonton television station CITV in 1974 and owned Superchannel and 50% of the Family Channel. Mr. Allard also owned the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association in the team's early years in the World Hockey Association in the 1970s.

J.D. McDuffie, 52. U.S. auto racing driver. Mr. McDuffie drove on the NASCAR circuit, participating in 653 races from 1963-1991. He had 106 top-ten finishes, but never won a NASCAR race. Mr. McDuffie was killed in a crash during the Budweiser at The Glen at Watkins Glen International, New York.

Tennis
Jennifer Capriati, 15, won her second straight tournament, beating Katerina Maleeva in the Player's Challenge Tournament in Toronto. The $100,000 purse was the largest of her 17-month career.

Golf
John Daly, an unknown who had driven all night from Memphis to make the first-round tee-off time as a last-minute replacement for Nick Price, won the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana with a 12-under-par score of 276, 3 strokes ahead of Bruce Lietzke. First prize money was $230,000.



Baseball
Rookie Wilson Alvarez, making his second major league start, pitched a no-hitter to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 7-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles before 40,455 fans at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.







The Boston Red Sox scored 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning and held on to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 9-6 before 50,297 fans at SkyDome in Toronto.

Mickey Tettleton hit a home run in each game, but his Detroit Tigers lost both games of a doubleheader 12-6 and 10-8 to the New York Yankees before 34,733 fans at Yankee Stadium. Dave Bergman homered twice for Detroit in the second game, while teammate John Shelby hit into a force play in his only plate appearance and made 2 putouts in right field in the 1,036th and last game of his 11-year major league career.

Jeff Manto hit a solo home run in the top of the 13th inning to give the Cleveland Indians a 2-1 lead, but the Indians made 2 errors in the bottom of the inning, allowing the Kansas City Royals to score 2 unearned runs for a 3-2 win before 27,006 fans at Royals Stadium.

Juan Gonzalez singled home Julio Franco with 1 out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Texas Rangers a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers before 31,169 fans at Arlington Stadium.

Ichiro Suzuki singled home 2 runs to tie the score and Mark McLemore followed with a single to score Tom Lampkin with the winning run as the Seattle Mariners scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to defeat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 before 45,898 fans at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Jose Cruz, Jr.'s solo home run with 1 out in the top of the 10th inning--his second of the game--broke a 6-6 tie as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Anaheim Angels 7-6 before 27,927 fans at Edison International Field of Anaheim. Mr. Cruz finished the game 4 for 6.
