Karl IX, 61
. King of Sweden, 1604-1611. Karl IX was the youngest son of King Gustav I. When his brother Johan III died in 1592, the throne passed to his son Sigismund, a Roman Catholic who was living in Poland. Duke Karl and and the Swedish privy council ruled in Sigismund's name, and eventually forced Sigismund to abdicate in favour of Karl, who was a Lutheran. Karl IX's reign was one of constant warfare, mostly unsuccessful, against Russia and Poland. He died on October 30, 1611, 26 days after his 61st birthday, and was succeeded by his son Gustav II.

Damon Runyon
. U.S. writer. Mr. Runyon, born Alfred Damon Runyan, covered baseball and boxing for Hearst newspapers for many years, but was probably best known for his short stories about colourful characters in New York City in the 1920s and '30s. The Broadway musical Guys and Dolls (1950) was based on two of his stories. Mr. Runyon was a heavy smoker who died of lung cancer on December 10, 1946 at the age of 66.

Frankie Crosetti
. U.S. baseball player and coach. Mr. Crosetti, nicknamed "The Crow," was a shortstop with the New York Yankees (1932-1948), batting .245 with 98 home runs and 649 runs batted in in 1,683 games. His on-base percentage was .341, aided by 792 walks and 114 times being hit by a pitch. Mr. Crosetti served as the Yankees' third base coach from 1946-1968, and was a member of 23 American League championship teams and 17 World Series winners. He coached with the Seattle Pilots (1969) and Minnesota Twins (1970-1971), and was estimated to have waved home 16,000 runners from third base. Mr. Crosetti died on February 11, 2002 at the age of 91.

Mr. Konstanty gave up just 2 hits, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 score. The only run scored in the 4th inning on a double by Bobby Brown and long fly ball outs by Hank Bauer and Jerry Coleman. Vic Raschi gave up just 2 singles in pitching the shutout.



The Columbus Clippers, champions of the American Association, defeated the Baltimore Orioles, champions of the International League, 6-3 to win the Junior World Series 4 games to 1.

Janis Joplin, 27
. U.S. singer. Miss Joplin, from Port Arthur, Texas, rose to prominence in the San Francisco acid-rock scene in the mid-late 1960s as lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company, whose 1968 album Cheap Thrills, which included the hit single Piece of My Heart, was a best-seller. She left the group soon after, and put together a backup group called Full Tilt Boogie. On July 4, 1970, Miss Joplin was one of the acts performing at McMahon Stadium in Calgary as part of Festival Express. She died of a drug overdose 16 days after the death of rock guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. Her album Pearl was released posthumously, and the single Me and Bobby McGee hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in March 1971. The next single, Cry Baby, didn’t sell as well, despite including Mercedes Benz--"a song of great social and political import"--as the B-side.

Diplomacy
Trucks in Amman waited for hours to ferry Palestinian guerrillas to new encampments in the countryside. The withdrawal was one of the provisions of the Cairo agreement to end the Jordanian crisis that had begun almost a month earlier when the guerrillas had hijacked four jetliners over western Europe and had eventually parked them in the Jordanian desert and held the passengers and crew as hostages.

The U.S. President's Commission on Campus Unrest decried the May 4 killings of four students at Kent State University by the Ohio National Guard as "unnecessary, unwarranted, and inexcusable." Quarterbacks Tom Wilkinson and Don Jonas guided the Argonauts to victory over the Tiger-Cats before a Civic Stadium crowd of 29,411. Mr. Wilkinson started and scored the game's first touchdown. Mr. Jonas converted and kicked 2 field goals, and Dave Mann punted 65 yards for a single as the Argonauts built up a 14-0 lead before Mr. Wilkinson left in the 2nd quarter with an ankle injury. Early in the 3rd quarter, Bill Symons rushed 98 yards for a touchdown to give Toronto a 20-0 lead. Mr. Jonas completed a touchdown to Tom Bland before the end of the quarter. Ed Buchanan and Dave Fleming scored touchdowns for the Tiger-Cats in the 4th quarter, both converted by Tommy-Joe Coffey. The Argonauts closed the scoring with a 68-yard touchdown pass from Mr. Jonas to Jim Henderson; it was Mr. Henderson's first CFL touchdown. Mr. Jonas was successful on 2 of 4 converts. John Eckman started at quarterback for the Tiger-Cats, but left because of injury late in the 1st quarter and was replaced by Wally Gabler, whom the Tiger-Cats had obtained from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a week earlier.

Henry Dorsch rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and Steve Molnar rushed 2 yards for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter as the Roughriders defeated the Alouettes before 21,708 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Ted Dushinski intercepted a Sonny Wade pass in the 4th quarter and returned it 42 yards for the final Saskatchewan touchdown. Jack Abendschan converted the first 2 touchdowns and kicked feld goals of 29, 12, and 40 yards. The only Montreal touchdown was scored in the 3rd quarter on a 39-yard pass from Mr. Wade to Dennis Duncan, converted by George Springate. The Alouettes' first score came in the 2nd quarter on a 50-yard wind-aided field goal by Justin Canale, his first CFL field goal. Ron Lancaster, who was relieved by Gary Lane in the 4th quarter, started at quarterback for the Roughriders and completed 12 of 24 passes for 208 yards and 2 interceptions. Mr. Wade threw 3 interceptions and Tony Passander, who relieved him in the 4th quarter, threw 1 interception. The Alouettes accumulated 349 yards passing but were outrushed 183-59.

The German parliament met in the Reichstag in Berlin, its first meeting since the reunification of the country the day before.

Canadian Senate speaker Guy Charbonneau forced a vote on a Liberal Party procedural motion while the Liberals were out of the room. The motion was defeated, robbing the Liberals of one of the tactics they were counting on to indefinitely stall passage of the Goods and Services Tax which had passed the House of Commons. Traditionally, votes were not taken in the Senate without the permission of both parties. Liberals responded with angry denunciations of Mr. Charbonneau and the Progressive Conservatives, who now held the majority in the upper house. The opposition Liberals carried on a filibister with 24 hours of shouting in unison, blowing horns, and pounding on desks. The chaos ended only when both sides agreed to a four-day adjournment.

23rd Premier of the Republic of China, 1984-1989. Mr. Yu was responsible for ending 38 years of martial law in Taiwan in 1987.

Michael Smith, 68. U.K.- born Canadian biochemist and geneticist. Dr. Smith ,a native of Blackpool, immigrated to Canada in 1956, and became a Canadian citizen in 1963. He taught at the University of British Columbia for more than 30 years, and was awarded a share of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for contributions to the developments of methods within DNA-based chemistry [...] for his fundamental contributions to the establishment of oligonucleotide-based, site-directed mutagenesis and its development for protein studies." Dr. Smith died in Vancouver.

Prime Minister Jean Chretien announced that Canada's highest mountain, Mount Logan, in Kluane National Park in the Yukon, would be renamed Mount Pierre Elliott Trudeau; he backed down after extensive public criticism.
