Charles Kingston
. Australian politician. Mr. Kingston, a radical Liberal, was Premier of South Australia from 1893-1899 and then entered federal politics as a member of the Protectionist Party, representing South Australia from 1901-1903 and Adelaide from 1903-1908. He was Australia's Minister for Trade and Customs from 1901-1903. Mr. Kingston died of a stroke on May 11, 1908 at the age of 57.

Alfred Douglas
. U.K. author and poet. Lord Douglas was best known as the friend and lover of playwright Oscar Wilde in the 1890s, resulting in Mr. Wilde's imprisonment. He died on March 20, 1945 at the age of 74.

Ivan Bunin. Russian author and poet. Mr. Bunin was known for works such as the short novels The Village (1910) and Dry Valley (1912), and the autobiographical novel The Life of Arseniev (1933/1939). He fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution, and lived in France from 1920 until his death on November 8, 1953, 17 days after his 83rd birthday. Mr. Bunin was awarded the 1933 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the strict artistry with which he has carried on the classical Russian traditions in prose writing."

King Cole started on the mound for the Cubs and left after 8 innings with his team trailing 3-2. Three Finger Brown (1-1) relieved and got the win. Chief Bender (1-1) pitched a 10-hit complete game for Philadelphia and took the loss.

19,199 were in attendance at Lansdowne Park to see the Roughriders whip the Argonauts.

The Alouettes’ win at Civic Stadium clinched third place for them in the IRFU and eliminated the Tiger-Cats from playoff contention for the first time since the Tigers and Wildcats had merged to form the Tiger-Cats prior to the 1950 season.

Johnny Bright’s short touchdown run in the last minute of the game enabled the Eskimos to avoid ending their regular season with a 5-game losing streak. Jackie Parker scored the first Edmonton touchdown, but missed the converts on both touchdowns. Vic Chapman scored the other Edmonton point on a punt single. 6,600 were in attendance at Taylor Field in Regina.

Most of the 29,599 fans at Empire Stadium in Vancouver went home disappointed when the Stampeders won their fourth straight game to end their regular season and clinch third place in the WIFU, eliminating the Lions from playoff contention.

Argentine President Raul Alfonsin ordered the arrest of 12 people, including two military officers, in connection with a month-long series of bombings which may have been related to the current trial of nine members of juntas accused of directing the kidnapping, torture, and murder of thousands of people during the country's so-called "dirty war" of the 1970s. The arrest decree asserted that the 12 had sought to "foment a split between the military and civilians." Seven were arrested.

Politics and government
A presidential election was held in Ivory Coast, but the government stopped the counting of votes after tallies showed the country’s military ruler, General Robert Guei, trailing opposition candidate Laurent Gbagbo.

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien obtained a dissolution of Parliament from Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and called a federal election for November 27.

Diplomacy
At the first meeting of the Arab League in four years, leaders of 21 of 22 nations (the Libyan representative walked out) declared that they would cease all but formal diplomatic contact with Israel until further headway toward peace with the Palestinians was achieved. They denounced what they called Israeli atrocities during the past weeks, and called on the United Nations to create a war crimes tribunal. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak declared a formal "time-out" from the peace effort, acknowledging the hiatus that essentially had existed since the eruption of violence nearly a month earlier.

Anthony Calvillo completed 19 of 25 passes for 230 yards and touchdowns to Thomas Haskins, Jock Climie, and Kevin Alexander to lead the Alouettes over the Roughriders before 27,138 fans at Taylor Field in Regina. Mike Pringle rushed 25 times for 145 yards and a touchdown. His major score gave him 19 rushing touchdowns for the season, a CFL record. Davis Sanchez also scored a Montreal touchdown, on a 50-yard interception return. Curtis Marsh, who led all receivers with 9 receptions for 175 yards, scored both of Saskatchewan’s touchdowns, recovering a fumble by quarterback Henry Burris and taking it in from the Montreal 1-yard line for the first Roughrider touchdown, and catching a 7-yard pass from backup quarterback Marvin Graves for the other. Mr. Graves entered the game in the 4th quarter when Mr. Burris injured a shoulder. The win clinched first place in the East Division for the Alouettes for the second straight year.



Kelvin Anderson rushed 24 times for 147 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Stampeders held on to defeat the Lions before a McMahon Stadium crowd of 33,890. The other 3 Calgary touchdowns came on passes from Dave Dickenson--1 to Vince Danielsen and 2 to Travis Moore. B.C. quarterback Damon Allen completed 22 of 34 passes for 407 yards and touchdowns to Alfred Jackson and Jimmy Oliver. Mr. Allen’s 19-yard completion to Mr. Oliver in the 2nd quarter made him the second CFL quarterback, after Ron Lancaster, to accumulate 50,000 career yards passing. Robert Drummond rushed for 2 B.C. touchdowns and Sean Millington rushed 36 yards for the other. The winning margin came on a 16-yard pass from Mr. Dickenson to Mr. Moore with 1:24 remaining in regulation time. The Lions struck back with a 1-yard touchdown run by Mr. Drummond with 38 seconds remaining. Mr. Moore led all receivers with 161 yards on 6 receptions; Mr. Oliver led the Lions with 5 catches for 136 yards.

The Yankees scored 3 runs in the first 2 innings, extended the lead to 6-0 over the Mets, and withstood a 5-run rally in the 9th inning to hold on for the win before 56,069 fans at Yankee Stadium. The game was interrupted by a bench-clearing incident in the top of the 1st inning when a pitch from Mr. Clemens shattered the bat of Mike Piazza, and Mr. Clemens threw the large end of the broken bat toward Mr. Piazza.
