Born on this date
George Coles. P.E.I. politician. Mr. Coles was first eelected to the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly in 1841, and was a member of the Reform Party, which evolved into the Liberal Party, when Prince Edward Island achieved responsible government in 1851, with him as its first Premier. Mr. Coles served three terms as Premier of P.E.I. (1851-1854, 1855-1859, 1867-1869), but opposed Confederation because he didn't believe it would solve the problem of land ownership. Mr. Coles suffered from depression in later years and withdrew from public life; he died on August 21, 1875 at the age of 65.

Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton. U.S. musician and composer. Mr. Morton, a native of New Orleans, was one of the 20th century's most noted ragtime and blues pianists. His compositions included Jelly Roll Blues; King Porter Stomp; Wolverine Blues; and Black Bottom Stomp. Mr. Morton never fully recovered from a stabbing in 1938, and died in Los Angeles on July 10, 1941 at the age of 50, after suffering from respiratory problems.

The Detroit Tigers came back from a 4-1 deficit, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to defeat the Cleveland Indians 6-5 before 22,508 fans at Briggs Stadium in Detroit to take a 1-game lead over the Indians for first place in the American League pennant race. Cleveland ace pitcher Bob Feller relieved starter Mel Harder in the 8th and faced Hank Greenberg, Rudy York, and Mike Higgins, all of whom singled, and two of whom scored, making Mr. Feller the losing pitcher as his record for the season dropped to 26-10.

Tom Dwinnell, Chuck Stanley, Tex Robinson, and Mr. Holden scored touchdowns for the Golden Bears. Ed Vernes converted all 4 and added a field goal, while Sarnia head coach and quarterback Hal Ledyard punted for a single.

Baseball
The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-4, with the with the winning run being driven in by a bloop single off the bat of Brooks Robinson in the 8th inning. Ted Williams of the Red Sox fouled a pitch off his ankle and was forced to leave the game; Carroll Hardy pinch-hit for him, the only time in his major league career that Mr. Williams was pinch-hit for. Mr. Hardy grounded into a double play.

The U.S.S.R. announced that the unmanned probe Luna 16 had landed on the Moon in the Sea of Fertility, and was sending signals to Earth. It was the first probe to collect lunar samples and bring them back to Earth.

War
Syrian tanks smashed into Jordan and Palestinian commandos supported by the tanks captured Irbid, Jordan’s second-largest city. Egyptian President Gamal Nasser pressured Jordan’s King Hussein to end the civil war.

Auto racing
Jacky Ickx of Belgium won the Canadian Grand Prix at Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, driving a Ferrari. Clay Regazzoni of Switzerland, also driving a Ferrari, finished second, with Chris Amon of New Zealand, in a March-Ford, finishing third. This blogger heard the broadcast of the race on CBC radio.

Sonny Wade threw a pair of 8-yard touchdown passes to Dick Smith and punted for a single to lead the Alouettes to victory before the usual sellout crowd of 33.135 at CNE Stadium. George Springate converted both Montreal touchdowns and added 3 field goals. Don Jonas threw 2 touchdown passes to Jim Thorpe for the Argonauts, one of them covering 75 yards. Mr. Jonas converted both and added a field goal. Moses Denson of Montreal led all rushers with 15 carries for 92 yards, while Mr. Thorpe led all receivers with 4 receptions for 114 yards. Mr. Jonas threw 4 interceptions: 2 to Al Phaneuf and 1 each to Gene Gaines and Richie Davis. Mr. Wade served up interceptions to Don Sutherin and Dick Aldridge.

The Eskimos scored their first touchdown on a kickoff return in 10 years when Jim Thomas returned the opening kickoff 6 yards and fumbled. Teammate Joe Hernandez quickly recovered and lateralled to Terry Swarn on the other side of the field, who went the remaining 99 yards for the touchdown. A few minutes later, Edmonton quarterback Don Trull connected with Mr. Thomas for a 58-yard touchdown pass. The other Eskimo touchdown came in the 4th quarter on a pass from Mr. Trull to Mr. Swarn. Dave Cutler added 3 converts and was good on 4 of 5 field goal attempts. With the score 33-1, the Eskimos started using their reserves, and backup quarterback Rusty Clark threw 3 interceptions. The Blue Bombers made the score a little more respectable with 2 touchdowns by fullback Bob Houmard. Gene Lakusiak converted both and added a single on a wide field goal attempt. 16,500 fans at Winnipeg Stadium witnessed quarterback Wally Gabler’s final game in a Blue Bomber uniform. Mr. Gabler had been acquired in August 1969 in a trade with the Toronto Argonauts for running back Dave Raimey and defensive back Chip Barrett. He was a great disappointment with Winnipeg; after a win in his first start and a tie in the next one, the Blue Bombers were 2-17 in Mr. Gabler’s remaining starts. He was soon dealt to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who had lost Joe Zuger for several games with an injury.

Jim Palmer pitched a shutout to earn his 20th win of the season as the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Cleveland Indians 7-0. Mr. Palmer joined Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally as 20-game winners on the Orioles.

The Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals split a doubleheader before just 672 fans at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The White Sox won the opener 8-4 as Bill Melton became the first White Sox player to hit 30 home runs in a season. In the second game, Jim York made his major league debut, pitching 4 2/3 innings of relief to get the win as the Royals won 8-2.

John Henry White rushed 1 yard for a B.C. touchdown in the 1st quarter, and Joe Paopao completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Harry Holt in the 2nd quarter. All the scoring in the second half consisted of singles: 2 by Lui Passaglia of the Lions in the 3rd quarter; and 3 by the Stampeders in the 4th--1 on a missed field goal by J.T. Hay, and the last 2 on punts by Mike McTague. Mr. Johnson completed 19 of 26 passes for 228 yards, while Mr. Paopao was 21 for 28 for 242. Messrs. Three minutes later, Harry Skipper returned a punt 89 yards to give Montreal a 14-0 lead after Roy Kurtz’s convert. The Argos scored 5 touchdowns in each half as they scored the greatest number of points by a team in a single game in 34 years. Matt Dunigan started at quarterback for Toronto and passed to Jeff Boyd for a touchdown in the 1st quarter and rushed 1 yard for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter before leaving with a torn hamstring. Rickey Foggie replaced him and rushed 15 yards for a touchdown and passed to Darrell K. Smith for another. Paul Nastasiuk also scored for Toronto on a blocked punt as the Argos led 36-7 at halftime. Don Wilson returned an interception 27 yards for a Toronto touchdown and then Mr. Foggie completed a touchdown pass to Paul Masotti. Mr. Foggie kept it up in the 4th quarter, rushing 25 yards for a touchdown, passing to Mr. Smith for another, and handing off to Mike "Pinball" Clemons for the game's final major. Lance Chomyc converted 9 of the scores (a 2-point convert attempt on the ninth touchdown was unsuccessful) and added a single on a wide field goal attempt. Terrence Jones passed 37 yards to Derrick Crawford for the first Calgary touchdown in the 2nd quarter and handed off to Darrell Wallace for a 16-yard touchdown run late in the 3rd quarter. Mr. Jones passed to Allen Pitts for a 2-point convert after Mr. Wallace's score. Mark McLoughlin converted the first Stampeder touchdown and added a field goal. Mr. Foggie rushed 7 times for 105 yards, and Mr. Smith led all receivers with 226 yards on 9 receptions. Mr. Clemons rushed 9 times for 73 yards an caught 7 passes for 100. The start of the game was delayed for 25 minutes because of concerns about safety resulting from seams in the turf where the bases and pitcher's mound were located for baseball games. 27,868 saw the Argos amass 35 first downs, 259 yards rushing, and 632 yards net offense.

Scandal
The six-year, $52-million investigation of the Whitewater Development Corporation, an Arkansas real estate project in which U.S. President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Clinton had been partners with Jim and Susan McDougal, concluded when independent counsel Robert Ray issued a final statement. Mr. Ray said that there was insufficient evidence to establish any criminal wrongdoing by the Clintons.

Economics and finance
Canadian Finance Minister Paul Martin announced that the surplus for 1999-2000 was C$12.3 billion, with a C$11.4 billion surplus in the first four months of the latest fiscal year.

Olympics
Aleksei Nemov of Russia won the men’s all-around gymnastics competition at the Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Baseball
Jim Edmonds hit a grand slam and Ray Lankford followed with a home run to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to an 11-6 win over the Houston Astros, clinching the National League Central Division pennant.

With the score 0-0 going into the bottom of the 9th inning at Dodger Stadium, the Arizona Diamondbacks brought relief pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim into the game to face Eric Karros of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Mr. Karros hit a home run to give the Dodgers a 1-0 win.

Dave Magadan and Mike Darr each drove in 4 runs as the San Diego Padres jumped out to a 15-4 lead and held on for a 15-11 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver. Pen Petrick of the Rockies drove in 4 runs on a sacrifice fly, a bases-loaded base on balls, and two ground outs to finish with 4 runs batted in without a hit, which is likely a major league record.
