Black Hawk, 71 (?). U.S. Indian leader. Black Hawk was a leader and warrior of the Sauk tribe in the midwestern United States. He fought on the side of the British during the War of 1812 and led a series of skirmishes against white U.S. authorities in 1832 that became known as the Black Hawk War.

Mr. McGuckin was a customs guard who, on July 24, 1928, fatally shot Leo Boice, a longshoreman from Hoboken, New Jersey, during Mr. Boice's alleged attempt to smuggle two pint bottles of whiskey. Mr. McGuckin committed suicide by inhaling illuminating gas in his home in Jersey City.

Libya and Chad, who had fought each other off and on for years until a cease-fire in September 1987, formally ended their state of war and resumed diplomatic relations. The two countries agreed to cooperate with the Organization for African Unity in determining sovereignty over the Aouzou strip in Chadian territory, which was currently occupied by Libya, and reportedly contained uranium. Mithileshwar Singh, an Indian citizen with permanent alien-resident status in the United States and a professor at Beirut University, was freed by his captors in Beirut 19 months after being kidnapped, along with three American professors, by gunmen who had identified themselves as Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine. The terrorists had offered to release one hostage in return for U.S. support for the Palestinians. Mr. Singh said his three American colleagues were "OK." The U.S. administration of President Ronald Reagan denied that any deal had been made to free any hostages.

Roddy McDowall, 70. U.K.-born U.S. actor. Mr. McDowall began his acting career as an infant model, and was a chile actor before moving to the United States with his family in 1940. He appeared in numerous films, plays, and television programs, but was probably best known for co-starring in the movie Planet of the Apes (1968) and several sequels. Mr. McDowall died of lung cancer, 16 days after his 70th birthday.
