Adeodatus I, 48
. Roman Catholic Pope, 615-618. Adeodatus I succeeded Boniface IV, becoming the first pope to be elected since John II in 533. Adeodatus I was the first pope to use lead seals (bullae) on papal documents, which in time came to be called "papal bulls." He died after caring for the poor and sick following an earthquake and an outbreak of leprosy in Rome. More than a year sent by until Boniface V was chosen as his successor.

George-Etienne Cartier and seven other exiled Patriotes who had participated in the Lower Canada rebellion of 1837 returned to Montreal from Vermont on the promise of good behaviour.

War
Cyrille Côté marched from Lacolle, Lower Canada toward Odelltown with 600 Frères Chasseurs (Hunters Lodges), as martial law was declared in the province. Traitors in the ranks tried to capture Robert Nelson at Lacolle, but failed.

Disasters
Explosions and fire at the Preble Box Toy Company in Lynn, Massachusetts killed 19 people--included a mother and her five children--and destroyed the factory and five nearby houses. 12 of the dead were killed at the scene. Many were injured, with eight in critical condition in hospital.

Democrats lost 7 seats to Republicans in U.S. Senate elections, but still won 22 of 32 seats up for electio. The Republican gain reduced the Democrats' lead to 68-23, with 2 Farmer-Labor, 1 Progressive, and 1 independent. In the House of Representatives, Republicans gained 81 seats, while Democrats lost 72, but still led the Republicans 262-169. The Progressive Party was reduced from 8 seats to 2; Farmer-Labor dropped from 4 to 1; and newcomer Vito Marcontonio was elected in New York as the candidate of the American Labor Party.

The Alouettes scored 2 touchdowns in the last 3 minutes of the game to defeat the Argonauts at Molson Stadium. Sam Etcheverry completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Red O'Quinn and then connected with Ivan Livingstone for a 67-yard gain to the Toronto 3-yard line, leading to Joel Wells' 1-yard touchdown run with 31 seconds remaining. Bill Bewley converted both Montreal TDs. The Argonauts scored their only touchdown earlier in the 4th quarter on an 8-yard pass from Ronnie Knox to Menan Schriewer, converted by Vic Kristopaitis, who also kicked a field goal. Dave Mann punted for 2 singles for Toronto.

Normie Kwong rushed 20 times for 152 yards and a touchdown; Johnny Bright rushed 23 times for 141 yards; and Jackie Parker rushed 3 times for 34 yards and a touchdown and kicked 3 converts as the Eskimos beat the Roughriders at Taylor Field in Regina. Don Flynn and Joe Mobra scored the other Edmonton TDs. Cookie Gilchrist led the Saskatchewan ground game with 13 carries for 109 yards, while Bobby Marlow rushed 19 times for 70 yards and the only Roughrider touchdown.

J.B. Smith and Bill Almashy each scored 2 touchdowns for the Golden Bears as they completed the series sweep at Kitchener Stadium, ending the Dutchmen's four-year reign as Ontario Rugby Football Union champions. Chuch Stanley, Ernie White, and Freddie Hamilton also scored Sarna TDs, with Gino Cappelletti, in his final game of Canadian football, adding 6 converts. Dave West led K-W with a touchdown and 2 converts, with Mike Norcia and Chico Mendoza scoring the other TDs. It was Sarnia's first ORFU championship since 1952, when they were known as the Imperials.

Peter Mohr Dam, 70
. Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, 1959-1963, 1967-1968. Mr. Dam helped found the Social Democratic Javnaðarflokkurin party in 1926, the years he was first elected to the Løgting. He led the Javnaðarflokkurin from 1936 until his death, and was a member of the Danish Folketing as one of two Faroese members from 1948–1957 and 1964–1967. Mr. Dam died in office, and was succeeded as Prime Minister by Kristian Djurhuus.

Wendell Corey, 54. U.S. actor. Mr. Corey was known for his supporting roles in movies such as The File on Thelma Jordon (1950); Rear Window (1954); and The Rainmaker (1956). He starred in the television series Harbor Command (1957-1958); Westinghouse Playhouse (1961); and The Eleventh Hour (1962-1963). Mr. Corey was president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1961-1963); was on the board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild; and was a member of the City Council of Santa Monica, California from 1965 until his death from heavy drinking.

The United States launched the solar-orbiting probe Pioneer 9 (aka Pioneer D) from Cape Kennedy, Florida.

The Czechoslovakian government announced that 80% of U.S.S.R. occupation forces had left the country, although 65,000-100,000 would remain in Bohemia "temporarily."

. Lithuanian-born U.S. clergyman. Rabbi Kaplan moved to the New York in 1889 with his mother and sisters. He and his son-in-law Ira Eisentstein founded Reconstructionist Judaism as a movement within Conservative Judaism in the late 1920s, and it became a separate stream of Judaism in 1955.

Diplomacy
Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau met with French President Francois Mitterand in Paris. Mr. Trudeau proposed that the five nuclear powers--U.S.A., U.S.S.R., U.K., France, and China--meet at a disarmament summit.

Winning 55% of the vote against two white candidates, Wilson Goode, a Democrat, became the first Negro to be elected mayor of Philadelphia. Kathy Whitmire and Dianne Feinstein, both Democrats, were re-elected as mayors of Houston and San Francisco, respectively. Richard Hatcher, a Negro and Democrat, won a fifth term as mayor of Gary, Indiana. Vice-President George Bush, running for the Republican Party, was elected President of the United States of America, capturing 40 states and 426 electoral votes to 10 states and 111 electoral votes for Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, the Democratic Party candidate. One elector in West Virginia eventually voted for U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen (Texas), Mr. Dukakis's vice-presidential candidate. Mr. Bush and his vice presidential running mate, U.S. Senator Dan Quayle (Indiana) won 48,881,221 popular votes (54%) to 41,805,422 (46%) for Mr. Dukakis. In Congressional elections, the Democrats gained one seat in the Senate, giving them a 55-45 majority. The Democrats gained two seats in the House of Representatives, giving them a majority of 260-175. Democrats also posted a gain of one in state gubernatorial elections, giving them an edge of 28-22.

Rumer Godden, 90
. U.K. writer. Margaret Rumer Godden wrote more than 60 books of fiction and non-fiction, but was best known for her novel Black Narcissus (1939), which was made into a successful movie in 1947.

Jean Marais, 84. French actor. Mr. Marais appeared in more than 100 films, most notably those directed by his friend and lover Jean Cocteau, including Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Orphée (1949).

Auto racing
Jeff Gordon came from back in the pack with 25 laps remaining to win the NAPA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, tying Richard Petty's 1975 modern-era NASCAR record of 13 victories in a season. The victory gave Mr. Gordon his third driving championship in four years.

Tennis
Greg Rusedski of Canada downed No. 1-ranked Pete Sampras 6-4, 7-6, 4-7, 6-3 in the men's singles final of the Paris Open.

Tracy Ham passed for 271 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Alouettes over the Argonauts before 17,495 fans at Molson Stadium. Toronto receiver Derrell "Mookie" Mitchell set a league record for a playoff game with 16 pass receptions, for 180 yards. It was the final CFL game and the only game in a Toronto uniform for kicker Carlos Huerta.



Jimmy Kemp relieved injured starting quarterback David Archer to begin the 2nd half and passed to Brian Wiggins for 2 touchdowns in the last 3:50 of regulation time to give the Eskimos their win over the Lions in an entertaining game before 26,102 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. The winning score covered 45 yards, coming with 50 seconds remaining; the touchdowns were the only ones Mr. Wiggins scored in an Edmonton uniform. Mr. Archer had a good 1st half as the Eskimos took a 24-10 lead into the dressing room, but former Eskimo Damon Allen quarterbacked a strong B.C. comeback in the 2nd half.
