Died on this date
Westbrook Van Voorhis, 64. U.S. announcer. Mr. Van Voorhis was a newscaster for the Mutual Broadcasting System and Columbia Broadcasting System, but was best known as the narrator of the radio (1931-1945) and film (1935-1951) series The March of Time. He also narrated the television series Justice(1954-1956) and Panic! (1957-1958). Mr. Van Voorhis was the narrator of Where is Everybody? (1959), the pilot film for The Twilight Zone that was shown to prospective advertisers, but was replaced by Rod Serling in the final version.

U.S. officials announced that 47,411 South Vietnamese civilians had been treated in hospitals during the first five months of 1968, as compared to 49,037 for all of 1967.

Golf
Gary Player shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to win the British Open at Carnoustie Golf Links in Angus Scotland with a 1-over-par total of 289, 2 strokes ahead of Bob Charles and Jack Nicklaus. First prize money was £3,000 ($7,200).

Diplomacy
Two days of talks in Geneva between U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and U.S.S.R. Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko concluded without a new treaty on strategic arms limitations. Mr. Vance was criticized by U.S. Senators Pat Moynihan (Democrat--New York) and Henry Jackson (Democrat--Washington) for going ahead with the talks while the U.S.S.R. was in the process of trying dissidents Aleksandr Ginzburg and Anatoly Shcharansky.

Abominations
Soviet dissident Aleksandr Ginzburg, who had managed a fund for families of political prisoners, was sentenced to eight years in a forced labour camp for "anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda."

Scandal
U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Tip O'Neill (Democrat--Massachusetts) was cleared of all but one charge in the House Ethics Committee investigation of the South Korean influence-buying scandal. Mr. O'Neill was criticized for having accepted two parties in his honour from South Korean businessman Park Tong Sun.

Labour
Police in Cleveland went on strike because of the city's dismissal of 13 policemen who had refused to patrol what they considered to be dangerous housing projects alone during the daytime. Mayor Dennis Kucinich, facing a recall election in August, obtained an injunction against the striking policemen.

Tom Scott, in his first regular season game in an Edmonton uniform, caught 7 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown to help the Eskimos defeat the Stampeders before 25,277 fans in the last Canadian Football League season opener to be played at Clarke Stadium. Jim Germany rushed 17 times for 69 yards and 2 Edmonton touchdowns, while catching 6 passes for 37 yards. Edmonton starting quarterback Tom Wilkinson completed 15 of 26 passes for 178 yards, a touchdown, and an interception before being relieved by Warren Moon, who played the last 20 minutes in the first game of his 23-year professional career, completing 6 of 10 passes for 59 yards and rushing 3 times for 15 yards while leading the Eskimos to a pair of field goals. Miles Gorrell made his CFL debut as a defensive lineman, playing his first of 321 regular season games in a 19-year career. James Sykes played his first CFL game with the Stampeders, rushing 5 times for 17 yards and catching 3 passes for 24 yards. The Stampeders took a then-record 20 penalties for 131 yards, including one to head coach Jack Gotta for coming onto the field without permission, a rule that league authorities said would be increasingly enforced in 1978. The Eskimos took 7 penalties for 20 yards.

Politics and government
The Mexican Federal Election Commission announced that Carlos Salinas de Cortari, presidential candidate of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), had won the July 6 election with 50% of the vote to 31% for Cuauhtemoc Cardenas of the National Democratic Front and 17% for Manuel Clouthier of the National Action Party. Mr. Salinas' share was far below the usual total for PRI presidential candidates. The PRI also lost ground in the national Chamber of Deputies, retaining a bare majority. In the Senate, the PRI lost four seats, an unprecedented result. Opposition parties denounced the election as fraudulent.

Baseball
The Boston Red Sox, in fourth place in the American League East Division with a record of 43-42, fired manager John McNamara and replaced him with third base coach Joe Morgan.

Konstantinos Kollias, 96. Prime Minister of Greece, 1967. General Kollias was Attorney General in the military junta that seized power in 1967, and was Prime Minister from April 21-December 13, 1967, when he was replaced by coup leader Georgios Papadopoulos.
