Super Series '78 stopped at Maple Leaf Gardens, as the Czechoslovakian club team Kladno defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 8-5. It was the first Maple Leaf appearance for rookie defenseman Greg Hotham, and the only 1977-78 game in a Leaf uniform for forward Scott Garland, who had been out with a knee injury. Garland was traded to the Los Angeles Kings after that season, and was killed in a car accident in June 1979. Mr. Garland scored one of the Maple Leafs' goals, while Mr. Hotham picked up an assist.
In the four major U.S. college bowl games, the Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 35-6 in the Sugar Bowl; Arkansas Razorbacks beat the Oklahoma Sooners 31-6 in the Orange Bowl; the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, behind the quarterbacking of Joe Montana, routed the Texas Longhorns 38-10 in the Cotton Bowl; and quarterback Warren Moon led the University of Washington Huskies to a 27-20 upset win over the University of Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl.
